I find buying flowers in Hong Kong can be a bit of a drama. You either go to the markets and risk…read moregetting a bloom that will be dead in a nano-second, or go to the really high end stores, that charges you an arm and a leg (showing your love has no cost apparently!) for a bloom, that will be dead in two nano-seconds. Well, after much trotting around, quite a few birthdays and anniversaries, and a lot of dead flowers and plants later, I have finally found Lovely Greenhouse, a great little store that sells good quality plants and cut flowers, but at a very reasonable price. Now I'm happy that Mrs L is happy - win-win all around...! The store makes up regular cut flowers bouquets and baskets, very much like the sort that you would give your mum, as well as wedding arrangements, and the specialist arrangements for events and openings (you know, the shop openings flowers that you often see around HK). They also have a small range of pot plants, mainly orchids, which are well tended and will last a few weeks for even the most talentless gardeners, i.e. me. On my last visit a week or so ago, I picked up one of these orchids for around HKD200. The brownie points from Mrs L was priceless, for the actual payment, there was Mastercard. Yep, credit cards and the like accepted. Even for phone orders. Personally, I prefer to visit the store. It is conveniently located in the MTR mall at HK Station, underneath the IFC Mall. The shop is kind of sparse, some may say minimalist, without so many displayed arrangements, with most wrapped up in the fridges, so it's good if you have an idea of what you want to buy before hand.

OVO Garden - Plenty of pots for your plants

A florist and a cafe in one place. With Christmas coming along, they were busy making pine tree basket that filled the cafe a nice scent, indeed it is quite magical, like Christmas. OVO garden is located at the end of the wan chai wet market, right across from their own furniture store. Where they sell pretty high end wood made furniture. After visiting their furniture store, we decided to stop by their cafe for a cup of tea and quick a snack. With a pleasant surprise, it turns out to be a florist place as well. Welcoming by lots of greens, we picked a table by their florist workstation . And we ordered a few pots of tea and their French toast for a quick bite. ( no refill for their tea, so a pot of tea (extra for $12) is a better choice than a cup, and you can probably share among 2 people ) The tea that they served are Dilmah tea, a good quality aromatic tea. And the French toast are freshly fried topped with a scope of ice cream and layer of cinnamon. I shared it among a group of 4 and the portion is definetly generous. The French toast itself isn't too sweet, with a touch of cinnamon is just right for me. Just wished they added in a bit more fruit or have the fruit cut a big larger . But other than that it was just perfect. We didn't get to try their coffee and other dishes, so I can't say much about their food selection and menu. But the ambience is quite nice. A good comfortable resting place if you are in the area. And they do have a 90 min limit for meal time, probably due to their limited seatings. Not sure how strict they are about their policy. But would also recommend their furniture store as well!

Who would have thought that there would be any need for a gardening centre in HK? I mean, who on…read moreearth has enough garden to require an entire centre with which to cater to it? Ahhhh, yes the bling ring on ex-pat contracts - lucky! If you ever do need to do any gardening, then the Garden Gallery is a great place to come. What it does above the outdoor furniture shops and other specialist gardening shops (like Jervis Bay BBQ), is that it has most things under one roof, and sells many more of the small accessory items, rather than just the big ticket furniture pieces. For example, you can get BBQs and garden furniture, but also K'Archer power washers, lawn sprinklers, plant food, furniture covers, table cloths, sheds, storage units, swimming pool tiles. It really has a very extensive and diverse range of products, but doesn't seem to sell plants and/or plant pots! The prices are pretty competitive in comparison to the other shop in Horizon Plaza, but this may be to do with their pile em high sell em cheap approach. This is definitely a shop and not a showroom! The staff are a little bit absent, but I can imagine they get pretty busy with few of them. It's the sort of place you should really know what you want before coming. There are three products I particularly from Garden Gallery, that I have not seen in many (or any) places in HK. Wall planters; these are teak plant pots which click into a shelving unit to make a straight or curved partition wall. Made in Thailand by a company called Deesawat, these are definitely worth checking out. K'Archer pressure washers; for car or garden, every man needs a pressure washer - go on, feel the power! Pond accessories; from giant plastic waterfall scenes to pumps and linings, Garden Gallery stock a lot of pond building materials. Garden Gallery is right their on my list of greatest hits in HK. I don't know any other gardening centres in the area, and this store has so many bases covered, so that when I do start to grow my own herbs on the terrace, I'll be coming here first.
