First of all, it's in one of the most expensive malls in one of the most expensive districts in one of the most expensive places in the world (Landmark, Central, Hong Kong). Secondly, it's an amalgamation of some of the more pricey cuisines: Japanese and Tapas, or trendily known as Japas. Thirdly, it looks like a contemporary art museum. But, never would I have imagined that here, I can not only have an affordable meal, but get one of the best valued dishes I've ever had! The signature Kikusan roll: 8 pieces of tuna filled sushi roll, topped with a whole slab of uni, green onions, and lots of salmon roe. All of my favourite things in a generous quantity for HKD $68. According to today's exchange rate, that's CAD $10.94. You usually get 8 pieces of California roll at that price (Kikusan's California Roll is actually $88). The same amount of uni at a supermarket easily costs 2-3x as much. The roll itself is mild, but still flavourful. There aren't any crazy flavour bursts, but it all works together well. The uni didn't have as much uni flavour as I would've liked but hey...$68. Really. The green onions added sharpness to cut through the smooth tuna and the little exploding roe provided bursts of sweetness. The Kikusan Roll was all about balance. By contrast, the Chili Sesame & Peanut Soup Ramen with Minced Pork and Layered Pork Cutlet was very in-your-face flavour-wise, and delicious in a whole other way! The pork cutlet had a hint of sake and the spice was at a perfect level of heat. My theory is that the Kikusan Roll is one of those loss leader things because it definitely drew me to this restaurant. The strategy seems to be working well. At 12:10pm, the queue was making an S in front of the entrance. Everyone was ordering things that range from sushi to dim sum in this Asian fusion restaurant, with dishes on average ranging from $60 to well above $100. It's much easier to get in as a group of 2, so my advice would be to split up your big group if you don't mind sitting apart. They've also got a dim sum takeout counter for those not willing to battle the line. Would you come to Kikusan for the best Japanese food? No, not even close. But it's where you go when you want to impress your out-of-town, non-Japanese friends. It's where you go when you want to feel a little fancier without spending the kind of dollars you usually spend at Landmark. The sashimi was very fresh & they give you nice thick pieces. I also had the Japanese mojito which was very refreshing. The star of the meal was the ikura and the toro. I've never had ikura that has the same pop or flavor as the ones here and the toro literally melts in your mouth. The sushi rice was fragrant and perfectly seasoned and the whole experience left me dreaming and drooling about sushi. They have a few robata items and other cooked items which were also delicious. I liked coming here was lunch more since they have sets than dinner where it's hard to gauge how much to order (if you're not doing omakase) but both occasions were great. The service is really friendly and the lunch sets are a decent deal for what you get. The restaurant itself is really small so I'd recommend coming early or late if you want to be sure to get seated. We went for lunch on a Saturday around 1pm or so. Traffic was busy, but not crazy. They have the conveyor belt that moves sushi past you and you pick off the belt as you see anything you like (sometimes difficult to know what some of the items are on the conveyor belt, that is why ordering from the menu might be easier for some stuff). We ordered some from the menu to ensure freshness and we also pulled some from the conveyor belt. It was a good value and we felt like we got a good meal for our money. My husband and I both agreed that the sushi was fresh, but the quality was not solidly there. The salmon from the menu was not spectacular, almost pale pink and white and a little too fatty, whereas the salmon from the conveyor belt was more what we were use to, bright orange and quite good. Spicket on table is for hot water and green powder on table is green tea powder. Put water in cup, add green tea powder to taste. No charge. So we might go again, not sure. Would not be worth the wait to us if there was a line, but if no line and we were in area, we might pop in again and give it another shot.

As you can imagine, since this place is rather cheap for sushi nearby, it does get quite packed during dinner hours especially on weekdays. The crowd waiting just outside of the elevator can be quite overwhelming sometimes. The best time to come here is actually on Sunday. There's almost never a line here for early lunch or dinner on Sundays. It's often a place where I come for a quick sushi fix before going to LKF. (You know it's not funny to spend a night drinking without some carbs in your belly!) If there's a long line, the option is to order sushi for takeout. Mind you though, the wait for them to pack your order can take up to 20 minutes during peak hours. Sen-ryo has a wide range of sushi and sashimi. Unless you are starving, I recommend you order them directly instead of getting the plates from the conveyor belt as the sushi will then be freshly made to order. They also have a good choice of cooked dishes like skewers, snacks, noodles and soup. If you want a drink, they also have a good choice of sake. They let you choose your own colorful sake glasses too!

You won't just get the basic silced sashimi here, it will usually come plated and sometimes with a tangy sauce or complements. I cannot single out a single sashimi dish but I am a big fan of the lobster congee with is wonderful near the end of a cold meal and before dessert, very moreish, very flavorful. It's around HKD 1,000 per head for omakase, and may be more expensive depending on what you want. But a good thing is you can tell them your budget and they can also figure out if that's doable. I did a ~HKD 600 omakase, but ended up spending another HKD 600 on sake. But hey, it's in Lan Kwai Fong after all, So is it cheap? Not really. But is the food delicious? Fresh? Totally. Am I drunk? They did redeem themselves, in my books anyway, by "messing up" and bringing us two plates of volcano rolls instead of one. We happily paid. My verdict, go for the volcano roll, but it's not a high restaurant on my list to return to.

This is a Maxims Group resturant which replaced Ruku, another higher end Japanese resturant. I think what Maxims tried to do was to update the look, make the place friendlier / more inviting & added a bar. The price point, HK$350-500 per person without drinks, is on the high side for what it is. More stars if it were lower priced. However, I would go back.
