For some reason this local gem is not in the Lonely planet. The hill, which requires approximately…read more1-1.5 hour hike one way, is a fantastic escape to the nature! The trail up goes mostly through the forest, however, once you get to the top, a fantastic view on Oslo will reveal itself! As this was my first time, I didn't find any specific path, just went up, till some kind soul advises me to follow blue marks on the trees, which you can do both on the way up and down.

The view is BEAUTIFUL, but the two paths leading up (and down) to the overlook are 1) not very…read morewell-maintained, 2) covered in LOOSE ROCK which you can't get your footing on, and 3) are VERRRRY STEEP. I have hiked all over the U.S. and never felt as unsafe as I did on this local trail. When you enter the park to hike to this viewpoint you have to CLIMB OVER AN ELECTRICAL FENCE, and GO THROUGH PRIVATE PROPERTY WITH 'NO TRESPASSING' signs. WTF? Not only that, but when you happen upon a beautiful pond in the middle of the forest the experience is quickly ruined by the fact that the path DOESN'T HAVE A BRIDGE but has A PILE OF UNCUT LOGS that MOVE when you step on them. This path is not maintained, is not welcoming, and is very dangerous at certain parts. Also, there are multiple spots where there are fallen trees HANGING OVER the path that could fall at any moment - I understand not wanting to interfere with nature's process, but isn't safety important at all? This simply would not pass in the U.S. - this trail would be deemed a YSD 2 or 3 trail and would not simply be labeled a hiking trail.

For a different kind of museum take a train out of Oslo and up into its surroundings. The crowds…read moreon the train thinned out quite a bit and there was maybe a dozen of left to walk through the downpour and up to the entrance of the ski jump and museum. Admission was included in the Oslo Pass and was one of the more unique offerings. If one comes back in the winter then you can experience ski jumping for yourself. As part of the museum admission we did to ride to the viewing platform at the top of the ski jump and took in the almost 360 degree views. We also got an almost direct view down the ski jump. Personally not for the faint hearted but a very unique experience. Inside the museum they included a good variety of exhibits from medalists, evolution of Holmenkollen since its founding, history of skiing equipment and sport, a kiddie section, a ski making shop and more. There also were two interactive exhibits to test how much you could pull, as in a sled, and a skiing competition. A large gift shop was by the exit along with a ski jump simulator ride (separate fee). Well worth it. A Scandic hotel was located practically next door if one want to spend more time.

Interesting stop as part of the tour. This is the ski area part of the city and a former site of…read moreWinter Olympics. We were here during summer, so it serves as a zip line. You can really appreciate the crazy slope when it's used as a jump. I have even more respect for Olympians and people who do this sport. Amazing!
