I wouldn't recommend the couvert. It's $18 for goat cheese + bacalhau + chicken liver pate (similar to foie gras) in Port wine. The whole assortment was interesting, but they have a single type of french bread which was bland. Appetizers * Cheese Salad (Salada ao queijo St Marcelin Empanado com nozes) was good, but I wouldn't get it again. The fried cheese was very interesting touch * Tartines were very good, I'd recommend. They had a thin crunchy toast base, and the toppings were lively and tasty. Dessert * Excellent place for dessert, everything we had was outstanding * The Tarte tatin was very good. The apples had a balance between firmness and softness that was extremely good. The tarte crust was thin and soft. * Café gourmand - comes with a creme brulee, chocolate mousse and a macaroon. Probably the best chocolate mousse I've ever had. The texture is amazing. They said the mousse was the main house dessert based off an 80 year old recipe.

The gnocchi tasted like basically nothing...just soft dough (irrespective of the fact that it had some sort of bland cheese sauce on top). Before ordering this meal I asked the chef if I could have pesto sauce on the gnocchi because I had a feeling the food might be lackluster in the flavor department. He reassured me that he would add it, however, there was no pesto to be found on the plate. I ordered the gnocchi based on his assurances, all for naught because he forgot to deliver what he promised. The lamb was okay... though it's kinda hard to mess up lamb unless you overcook it, so this is not some kind of accomplishment. Even the dessert options seemed lackluster here, and I'm a HUGE fan of sweets. My advice: skip this place and opt instead for Due Cuochi one block down.

The wall is dotted with a mix of vintage concert posters from blues and jazz greats to black and white images of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and their cohorts. We found a solid wine and cocktail menu (we went with a garrafa -- 375ml bottle -- of Chilean Carménère) and a really terrific food menu. The Le Jazz salad was fantastic. Slices of pear punctuated by crumbles of gorgonzola and matched with crisp lettuce and bits of bacon. It was the first salad I've had that made me feel like home. The large size was big enough to split between 2 people and that's just what we did. The next (and final) dish was L'Entrecôte (a rib eye cut of steak paired with hand-cut fries and a small salad). The server never asked how I'd like it prepared (medium-rare), but the steak came cooked just that way. After 8:30pm, the rest of the neighborhood stops by and you're likely to catch a minimal wait time. Next time, I'll have to try the dessert.

Caipirinhas, beers, wine - you'll find a stocked bar offering mostly the essentials. 30 minutes ended up being much shorter and before we even got our cocktails, we were escorted to our downstairs table. The menu (all in French) is utterly petite. There were 3 specials (steak, chicken, salmon), a handful of salad choices, and a number of different quiches. Surely I went with the steak and found it cooked perfectly. The quiches stole the show however. Admittedly, quiche is the last thing I want for dinner (or perhaps at any point in the day), but I really loved their version (specifically the one with onions). Budget-friendly, happily busy, and located around lots to do, I'll certainly be back to La Tartine.
