This review is not about the service. Sitting inside gave me a direct Birds Eye view into the kitchen... unfortunately. After ordering I had to watch the person in the kitchen, while preparing foods, eating and licking his fingers. It completely ruined my meal!! The patio overlooks the Tiergaertner Tor Platz and it was crowded like a beehive tonight. The huge plaza tree was lit up and thousands of folks enjoying their night on the patios of the surrounding restaurants, on the plaza benches, or even seated on the ground. Great ambiance all together. The staff was very attentive and we didn't seem to have an assigned server as any of them passing by checked to see if we needed anything. The menu here changes often, but also has a few staples and some innovative takes on our Franconian dishes. So we discovered Pretzel pizza... I was suspicious at first, reading the list of ingredients, but threw caution in the wind and went for the Franconian version (my friend opted for the Vegetarian). It really did sound horrible... laugen dough (which is what pretzels are made of), Schmarrn (related to sourcream, or cream cheese, but not quite the same), local brats, kraut, cheese and tomatoes. I was prepared for a nightmare... but it ended up being delicious. The pizzas were served with a mini salad topping the middle of it. The dough was nice and thin and had that typical nice chewy crust all around. The ingredients worked surprisingly well together, but could have done without the tomatoes. Visually they were a nice pop of colors, but tastewise they had no business on the Franconian Pretzel pizza. I didn't try the vegetarian version, but my friend, who is a tiny person, ate the entire thing, whereas I could only finish half of mine. So I would say she enjoyed it. I had the pana cotta with blueberry compote and was delighted to see the compote made from the small blueberries I grew up with instead of these huge overbred tasteless blueberries so common nowadays. Kudos to this place. Check it out if you are ever in the area.

Got a Rotbier as well. Unfortunately, the spätzle arrived lukewarm, which disappointed me. Looking back, it would've been wiser to have ordered the Franconian dishes on the menu instead. Nevertheless, the beer was pretty good, the ambiance was pleasant, and prices were well-affordable. There's also a beautiful Biergarten right outside, which had a small Christmas market going on when I visited. Would like to return someday to try more of its selection. Let's hope!

I came across this hidden gem through reddit. This restaurant is nestled up on one of the side streets more in an alleyway. I ordered an aperol spritz as well as a full order of the Braised onion soup which had franconia onion sauce and delicious homemade potato balls *chefs kiss* my mother had the same but half the portion including the wine soup which she loved! Definitely wish I could've ordered more off the menu! The portions are very generous, loved the cozy ambiance and the unique charm this place had! As I walked out, I seen nothing but cheerful people in groups with friends/family eating and drinking, it definitely felt like more of a home Backöfele is a MUST when in Würzburg, remember to make reservations, this place fills up on the quickness and I could see why!
