After trekking more than 10 kms today it was an obvious, and as it turned out, brilliant choice. It was fairly busy but our server, from the Netherlands originally, was great. He patiently explained the menu offerings as his English was far superior than my German will ever be. It's very nice inside with a couple of coolers housing large cuts of beef on display. Turns one of the owners is a butcher by trade, and the other a wine sommelier, nice combination. I ordered the goulash and the lovely K garnered the final cut of Dry Aged Entrecôte available for the evening and we shared a green salad. The salad sat on top of nicely boiled potatoes, which was something we have never experienced, but will surely steal as an idea. The goulash was excellent, and the steak absolutely brilliantly cooked medium rare. Finally the wine was also top drawer, and the beer excellent. What really made the experience a six stars out of five was our server. We were amongst the last cold there so we had a chance to talk with him about the restaurant, its owners and origins as well as some personal stories. We've ate well on this trip to Europe, but this meal experience will most certainly be at the top of the list.

HUGE portion sizes! But also delicious LOL…read more We made the mistake of ordering too much - a pork knuckle with the bread dumpling/salad side and kasnocken for 3 people. This was my first time trying Kasnocken and it was yummy but heavy (I hope I don't offend anyone by saying this but I would say it is similar to mac n cheese). I don't usually love huge chunks of meat but I really liked the pork knuckle was well - the meat was tender and the skin was crispy but not burnt. I wasn't a fan of the bread dumplings and definitely could've done without it but I think it was more of a personal preference. They also have a wide selection of beer of course. It was a bit out of the way and in a not very popping neighborhood, but the restaurant itself was BUZZING - completely full on a Thursday evening. The restaurant itself is pretty big too. Since it was busy, the service was a bit slow but our server was really nice.

During our first visit to Salzburg in 2009, we asked our hotelier to recommend a genuine Austrian…read morerestaurant - one that did not offer "Menus for tourists" and that prepared authentic dishes. He recommended the Bärenwirt. Returning to Salzburg with our 11 adult children and grandchildren, we wanted them to have a similar authentic experience so we made a reservation at our old haunt, which has been in operations since 1663. Things have changed over the last 16 years. On our first visit, the menu was only in German and our server spoke to us in German until we threw in the towel and admitted, "Ich spreche nicht sehr gut Deutsch. Englisch, bitte?" (I don't speak German well. English, please?) Now, 16 years later, English has become the default and today, the menu is presented in four languages. But the food is still just as authentic and delicious. Taking grandkids who range from 10 to 15 years of age, we were bracing for a few refrains of, "I don't LIKE that! It's weird!" or similar rants, but we heard none of it. All the kids (and parents, too, for that matter) dove gamely into the menu and found things that were to their liking. The menu is large and varied. Main dishes include roast pork, pasta, sausage with roasted potatoes, dumplings, goulash, schnitzel, fried chicken, boiled beef and (of course) bratwurst. The food was good, there was an excellent variety, and it was brought out quickly. Prices for main dishes were quite reasonable, with most under €20. Wiener Schnitzel was the most expensive, at €28,90 but it was an outlier. The only issue I had was the price of the soft drinks. Between our grandkids, they had 10 Cokes - at €5.90 EACH. That was €59 for sodas; more than we paid for all of our beers. My wife was determined that, for dessert, the kids and grands would all taste Kaiserschmarren mit Zwetschkenröster - cut-up pancake with raisins topped with powdered sugar and served with a jam for dipping. A truly Austrian experience that everyone enjoyed, though some more than others. On the night we visited, we encountered several other parties of Americans. I have no way of knowing whether the place has become that popular with visitors or management simply corralled us into the same room. Regardless, it was a very pleasant evening and one I'm sure we will repeat the next time we're in Salzburg.
