Since we don't live too close to it anymore, we've been making extra efforts to visit here now that COVID-19 restrictions have been mostly lifted. Just recently wearing of masks has been totally lifted. The only thing still required is to sanitize your hands (it's a good idea anyway COVID or not) and register your contact information on app or paper upon entering. Their schäuferla (slow roasted pork shoulder) served with potato dumpling and sauerkraut is simply the best in Franconia, perhaps in the entire Bavaria/Germany. It's that good IMHO, and on top of that it's very reasonable for only 10€. I could enjoy it every time I eat here. Biergarten is a local favorite, and hikers, bikers & motorcyclists make this place a regular stop to enjoy food and drinks. The popularity is evident by the patrons' cars parked along the road on both directions. Obviously, I don't know what the future holds in terms of our battle against COVID, but I sure hope we can continue to enjoy this biergarten/restaurant this winter (biergarten will be closed for the winter, so we have to be able to eat indoors). Schiller, thank you for providing great food and Franconian hospitality! We will make every effort to come back to enjoy your food.

That said, I was served the best smoke beer I have ever had. OK it is not a beer you encounter often, but I am a big fan so always keep an eye (or even a mouth) open for it. Until this point with half the places I intended to visit closed, I had been wondering if my trip out of town was going to be worth it. This drink made all the deference. Such a subtle smokey flavour...absolutely delicious. I was served with this by a lovely Asian girl who's German was the clearest and easiest to understand in this part of Germany!

I felt i only got cardilage and the rest of the fleisch was everything but tender. Also the semmelknoedel tasted like leftover from lunch. As it was just too bad i told the young waiter. He came back with an interesting response from the cook. The cook tried my leftovers (???) and told the waiter this is exactly how kalbshaxenfleisch has to be, tough, fatty and full of cardilage. What a response!!! I felt embarrassed! I do not complain easily and certainly not without reason! I paid but decided to talk to a manager. I asked the receptionist of the hotel. The lady took responsibility immediately. She listened and asked me to sit down for a minute to check. She also offered a free espresso. 2 minutes later she came back, excused the unprofessional way to handle my complaint and gave me my money back.
