The Big Chill is kind of like the Jamba Juice of the Philippines. They both have different fruit…read moreconcoctions and power blends and both have really great juices and shakes! The difference would be the mixes of fruit, the selection of food and The Big Chill has juice boosts and uses Filipino fruits. If you're craving for Jamba Juice but it's not anywhere near where you are, your best yummy backup is The Big Chill. Not to say that one is lesser than the other, it's just it does have similarities. Either way, whichever you buy drinks from, you'll surely satisfy your thirst and taste buds. Whenever my family watches a movie in the Power Plant Mall, I either get coconut juice or have my regular Supercharger in The Big Chill. It has mango, strawberry and grape, 3 of my favorite fruits and has a blend of anti-oxidants, nutrients and amino acids so what's not to like? It tastes so good too! Don't let the striking green color make you think it tastes like bland vegetables because it doesn't. I've tasted their sandwiches too but they're nothing special. Green mango and pineapple paradise are delicious choices as well and I make it a point to couple them with Spirulina - which is a super food that is good for your immune system and rich in protein.

I'm not a "shake" kinda guy. Normally, I don't drink like fruit shakes or fruit juices or whatever,…read moremaybe except for the very, very occasional Jamba Juice. However, there was one morning when I wanted some milk tea. I went to the food hall in La Salle, only to find that the only place open was Big Chill. I still wanted a drink, so I was like, "why the hell not, I'll try it out." I ordered their Power Breakfast, which was oats and bananas. I fully expected to not really love it. Boy, was I wrong. I absolutely loved that thing. Obviously, it tasted like breakfast. I like eating fresh bananas, but normally, I dislike bananas in juices and shakes 'cause it stops tasting fresh. However, Big Chill's shake tastes like I'm eating the bananas. It's grinded just well enough so that there's no annoyingly huge chunks of ice that I hate when it comes to shakes or smoothies.

This is the place to go for delicious but affordable fruit shakes at the Shopping Center,…read moreespecially on a hot summer day, which I did just recently, when I had to attend an event in UP. The taste is always fresh and delicious. And the price is good, with shakes starting at P35. When you enter their stall, you are greeted with a rainbow of fruits to choose from for your shake. Great thing is, you can combine fruits! They have a list outside which you can use as a guide or you can simply point to fruits you want to mix. I love strawberry mango! There are event suggested fruit and vegetable combinations, like carrot, apple, and pear. Once you choose, you mention your selection and you pay for your order. Then you wait. It can be quite a wait, but it's worth it. That has always been the case for me.

The second best part about the shakes here is that they are customizable: they have a great variety of shake ingredients you can choose from, which you can combine for your drinking experience. You can totally create some bizarre Frankenstein's monster of a shake and they'll do it for you. The "healthy" and "fruit" in the your shake here are certainly relative, as there are options like milk chocolate chips, cookies, and cheese, as well as the usual, much more nutritious fruit and vegetables. They add sugar syrup and milk to the shakes most of the time, and you can opt out of either of those as well. The first best part about the shakes is that they're CHEAP. A twelve ounce cup is around thirty to forty pesos, which is likely half of what you would pay for in most other shakeries, and the price of bigger cups aren't that much. Even for non-local or seasonal fruit like strawberries or kiwis, it's still the same price, and another ingredient to your shake is just a five peso addition. It can get a little hot and cramped in their tiny stall, but at least you know the stuff is fresh since you're surrounded by their produce, which you can buy as well, and their makeshift order and payment system is pretty efficient. Whenever you're in the area, just look for the last shopping center stall closest the UP COOP.

Cold-pressed juices from healthful fruits and vegetables are just so much better than soda or soft drinks that are packed with unhealthy food coloring, additives and a lot of sugar that spikes your energy level in a flash but gives you a nasty crash. I find that what I really need most of the time for that healthy energy and vitamin boost are natural and green juices that help rehydrate and load me up with electrolytes and nutrients. I like The Daily Jusa because it is a very convenient way to add vegetables and fruits into my diet. I don't get to cook much these days and I like to replace my fruit and veggie intake with one of their meal replacement juices. I always get the Green Energizer juice, which is cold-pressed greens with papaya and pineapple. On detox days, I would also get the Lemon Flush, which has lemon and cayenne pepper. They also have a bunch of different nut milks, and people who are lactose intolerant (or mildly lactose intolerant, like me) will love their cashew milk. The prices are a bit expensive, but I think juicing in general is expensive and its only fair that you pay a premium for well-prepared juices. I think it's worth it and The Daily Jusa is one of the cheaper brands for cleanses, juices and detox plans in the market. You can order their weekly plans which comes with your very own thermal bag. You can subscribe to their bottle programs, and be on your way to a healthier diet. I am glad The Daily Jusa is only a few blocks away.

Personally, the juice is ridiculously expensive. Again, something I've come to expect from eating organic. Personally, the salads are a better deal. They're around 110php which is definitely much cheaper than going to the grocery and buying all these ingredients and making the salad myself. It's good for a light (and I mean really light. Fruit and veg burn easily) lunch or snack. What I do like is the fact that they mix fruit with vegetable. I've never been a fan of purely vegetable salads. I blame my sweet tooth. But fruit? I can have fruit all day. (The watermelon mint is great in the summer)

What's so remarkable is that they're no frills juice. No extenders, no colors, no ice, no milk, no chemicals, no syrup. Just juice. In a bottle. With a bit of pulp. Pure. Freaking. Juice. How amazing is that? Want me to amaze you even more? It's only 50php. Yes, you heard me. For 50php, you get about 400-450ml of pure unadulterated juice. That is an AMAZING deal, if you ask me. It's also exactly what these hot summer days have been practically clamoring for. I admit, I've probably been a little dehydrated nowadays so a bottle of their guyabano juice (yes, they have guyabano juice. Don't look at me like that. I love guyabano.) was nothing short of heaven. It was cold and sweet and absolutely fresh. Guilt free juice. And apart from guyabano, they have orange, lemon, watermelon and mango just to name a few. Typical tropical fruit flavors. Unfortunately, they just opened so there aren't that many stalls open yet. Just two in SM City North EDSA so if you're ever in the area, do it. Give up Frutas, give up Jamba Juice and give these guys a try. I guarantee you'll walk away a believer.

And oh, that's an image of summer, the beach, and of course, of healthy drinks! Islands Juice is obviously a juice company, but what may be hidden from our view is how great they actually are. I like the fact that they don't add chemicals or intense sweeteners: they let you taste how naturally sweet these fruits from nature are. I recommend the Guyabano, Lychee, Lemon and Watermelon (definitely their best seller). So what are you waiting for? Spend your money wisely and drink healthy!
