The favelas are not usually well built and thus don't tend to last, mostly made from brick and cement. Most have running water as well as electricity. These poorly structured favelas can make it difficult to fit them with plumbing and electricity.
Favelas grew as migration to Brazil increased and favelas make up for around 6% or so of the housing in Brazil.
