Okay, I fully expected Salzburg Zoo to be a cute little "two goats and a sad parrot" situation, but plot twist: it's actually kind of amazing. First of all, it's literally built into the side of a mountain. You're walking around looking at rhinos while Austria just casually flexes its scenery in the background. Some of the animals have a better view than most hotels I've stayed in. The whole place feels more like a nature walk than a zoo. There are shaded paths, cliff faces, little hidden corners -- every turn feels like, "Wait, how is this here??" You'll see flamingos, wolves, cheetahs, monkeys, even farm animals that look like they live a more peaceful life than I do. read more

Salzburg Zoo is a simple bus ride from the centre of the city and, extraordinarily, it appears to have been hewn out of the foot of the Hellbruner Mountain. When we went there a couple of years ago there was a lot of building work going on there so, hopefully, that's all done and dusted and there are even more enclosures and animals to see. As soon as you step in you are greeted by various small animals in moated enclosures. There was still snow on the ground when we went so some of them did look a little out of context. All of the animals looked healthy and happy enough. We were entranced by the tiny monkeys and there were some cotton-top tamarins which were very cheeky - one of them tried to clamber on to my handbag. There was an automatic door to their habitat and we noticed they very nearly managed to slip out a few times while we were there. They were probably stopped only by the extremely cold weather and snow outside. There were several big cats (all sleeping of course). Their enclosures were set up against the foot of the mountain in such a way that you could see them almost wherever they happened to be in the enclosure. You could actually get very close to them. There is a pathway which leads you through every single part of the zoo which is split in to the three different sections of Eurasia, Africa and America. Again, I was impressed by how open the enclosures are for the big animals such a the rhinos (see my photo). It felt like I could get very close to them. There was, of course, a restaurant and a petting zoo next to a picnic area. I had a good day at this zoo as the animals all seemed well looked after and it is probably much more impressive now if the building work has been completed. read more

The zoo is very small however has a great variety of cats. The animals were very active. You can even pet and feed some of them. The lemurs climbed out of their area and were jumping in the trees above us. I was close enough to touch them! Highly recommended if you have the Salzburg card. Just take bus 25 there and back from city center. read more

Salzburg zoo was amazing when I went there in march 2006, surrounded by snow on a clear day. It backs up to the foot of short cliffs, and the vulture is allowed out and about! I don't know why it comes back. The big cats have huge enclosures which put London zoo to shame, and spend all their days up trees looking at the zebra, who is a bit lonely, and frankly looked chilly in the snow. The rhinos were great, again in a huge enclosure, but pride of place goes to teh tiny little capuchin monkeys, who have a private little jungle section next to the cafe that you are allowed to wander through. These little devils are very inquisitive and try to escape (the door isn't very secure it has to be said.) Keep your handbag secure or they may hitch a lift. They had a wolf enclosure but try as we might we couldn't see any. Perhaps they were resting. read more

Salzburg zoo is one of the best we've been too and we've been to numerous zoos all over the world. If you rent a car, this is a must do! The animals are very close and a lot you can feed and pet. You can buy food at the ticket counter. Kids under age 4 are free. You can also buy a combo ticket with the Hellbruin trick fountains which is also a must do...they are right next to each other. Parking is free; take your parking ticket in and stamp it on the way out. Numerous eateries inside as well. There is a bus stop right near the zoo, but we always drive! read more
