It's nowhere near as crowded and in my opinion, has more local flavor. This beautiful water reserve has a park on the upper level which is a bit interesting to walk around with remnants of a bizarre zoo. It has its own listing so I will reserve my thoughts for there: https://www.yelp.com/biz/parc-longchamp-marseille-2 After a dire water shortage in 1835 causing a cholera epidemic, this reservoir was completed in 1869 to assist in preventing such an event again. Also....buildings taking 30 years to build is unfathomable to me! Nowadays, this monument also houses the Museum of Fine Arts in one wing and the Natural History Museum in the other wing. And between the two sides, the château d'eau has awe inspiring architecture marked with details in every crevice. This castle of water is just wodnerful. I'm not gonna pretend that an adorable dog swimming in one of the fountains bumped this review from a 4 star to a 5. I love animals and he was so adorably carefree!

If you are visiting Palais Longchamp, it's worth walking up the steps if you're able to check out…read morethe Parc Longchamp. Opened in 1869 same as the palais, it's a nice English style landscape garden to take a walk around. One thing I learned after the fact, was within this lovely park is a 150-year-old plane tree and an oak and a Siberian elm that are both 120 years old. Antique nature. When we were walking around, there were others sitting alone reading and a large group playing frisbee together. This may be a small park, but it still has a lot of life in it. They had a map, some statues, and remnants of an old zoo. Some cages still stand from the 1987 closing - it's actually quite fascinating to take a look through. The zoo was closed when the public decided keeping animals in cages was no longer a good look. Good for them. It's free, same as the Palais and usually open until sunset.
