I didn't see any sugar free options available in the pick your own (I do believe they have a sugar free root beer), but I may have missed it. It'd be nice to have that available. Staff were friendly and the vibe inside seemed chill. I like that there are alcohol free spaces for people to hang out!

There are plenty of games to keep you occupied and the staff are fantastic. The stars of course are the sodas and the concoctions the staff can make with them. The sodas by themselves are great and the flavors are creative. But then you step up to the bar and the magic begins. First, you can sample everything that's on tap. From there they can blend sodas, add flavored creams and syrups, and produce drinks that will bring you back to your childhood. A mix of their Chocolate Cream soda and regular cream tasted like the Chocolate Egg Creams I grew up on in NJ. Later the bartender added cherry syrup and it was like drinking a chocolate-covered cherry! Kids would have a field day here, but so will adults.

Located in the Northeast neighborhood of Minneapolis, Surdyk's Liquor and Cheese is an institution,…read morestarted as a liquor and grocery store in 1934, moving to this location in 1979. Now run by third-generation owners, it expanded to retailing fine wine and cheeses as well. I stopped in to buy some house gifts, and was pleasantly surprised by its very large selection of products, displayed in a way that it was enjoyable to do some 'window shopping'. In my case, I focused on the whiskey's and found what I was hoping for (from the Nikka distillery, a place I had visited a long time ago). But surprisingly it carried American made whiskey (in this case, from the Seattle area) for a price that was lower than what I had paid when actually visiting the distillery itself. I took the time to walk around a bit, noticing that they had an entire section devoted to just German and Austria wines. (Would have been shocked to find wines from Luxembourg, which is on my list). There were also a large beer refrigerated room, as big as any I've seen at big retailers. Of course, it had the beers from the Midwest that are hard to find where I live now (Leinenkugel, Hamm's, and Zywiec). Also noticed a small display of cigars, protected behind locked glass. Ended up getting two Westland Single Malt 750ml for $56.99 each. Checkout was identical to any large liquor store chain (like a grocery store checkout with employees who do checkout and are not really knowledgeable about the products sold).

It is a solid place to stop whether you know exactly what you want or need some guidance, since a lot of the employees are knowledgeable and willing to help. They also do tastings from time to time, which can be fun if you are there with friends. The last time I went, I needed help picking out a tequila and the worker walked me through the basics and gave me a few options. I ended up going with his recommendation and it was a big hit at the party. I also come here specifically for THC drinks since they have a huge variety. Pricing is a little high, but that seems pretty standard everywhere for this kind of stuff, so it is not surprising. I have had a couple moments where workers at the tasting stations came off a bit off putting, but that has been outweighed by the other staff who are much more engaged and helpful. If you are looking for a place with a wide selection and people who can help you choose, this is definitely worth checking out.

They didn't carry what I was looking for but they did have a modest mix of micro beers, I picked up a six of Limited Edition Lagunitas ($9.99 ... ouch! ... but it was Limited...) in place. They had a lot of major brands and it seemed that was their focus, or biggest sellers, as it were. Wine racks down the center of the place and the remainder shelved the hard stuff. Prices of the micro I looked at seemed fair. I also bought a Powerball ticket so if you don't see any further entries from me, you'll know why. Upon further review I have to believe Minneapolis, especially Northeast Minneapolis, has the highest number of bars & liquor store per capita in the entire eight county metro area. What that means or says I have no idea.

As someone who doesn't drink, I really appreciated how many non-alcoholic choices they carried--not something you see everywhere. I also noticed they host events from time to time, which is a cool added touch. The lady working the register was super friendly and easy to talk to, which made the experience even better.
