I came upon this group while walking in the park one sunday eight years ago. I had a young son, and no experience or prior interest in martial arts. i saw a group of men and women, old and young, moving together in graceful patterns with wooden swords. I was attracted, seeing something I could do that would interest my 13 year old warrior son, and that I could do.
We were welcomed into the community, and by working over a few years, both my son and I were able to test for our black belts on the same day. It was nothing for my son, but as an elder, who had no prior experience in this area and not a great deal of athletic ability it was wondrous for me.
I learned so much about myself in these classes. Not just the physical, but also about attention, focus, setting goals and working closely to learn each of the graceful patterns of sword that are known as forms. They are a bit like Tai Chi movements, but more intense and fast paced. Eventually we learn to use a real blade, and with our wooden swords, and our bodies, we also do a bi of light sparring. We balance the physical work on forms with chanting and meditation, and learning about our body and mind. The impulse to do something different on my walk in the park has changed my life. I achieved my ambition to reach my black belt by age 65, and now Im pursuing the next level of expertise in this wonderful school. this is a wonderful activity for anyone of any age, not just for young physical boys, but for all of the rest of us, who want to tap into our inner warrior. read more
