Finding myself back in Terre Haure for the month of June 2019 to visit my folks, I am brightened to…read moreknow that Kelsey and her sister are still here in this community serving the public one long powerful downward facing dog at a time. Actually, I have come to discover that Common Ground Crossfit & Yoga are celebrating four years of being in business this week. So not only grateful for the random occasion summer weeks that I show up from time to time, Kelsey has posted an honorary wall thanking and commending members that have come for 100+ classes, 200+ classes, 300+ classes....there is even a member that has come for 600+ classes. If my humble Yelp reviews are not enough to sway you to come in and check it out, if such a committed base of clientele coming with such regularity is not a silent shout & high five speaking to the quality of Kelsey and her instructors, I don't know what is. As I said in my initial review almost two years ago, I do not attend Crossfit, so I cannot speak to that portion of the facility and Kelsey's sister who runs it (who kind of seems like a fun, cool bad-ass by the way...as I see her as I enter and slink off to the right side of the studio to attend yoga...those people over there are always working hard!). So being in 100% agreement with what I said on my prior review and also wanting to simply commend Common Ground for their 4 years of business, I would like to stress how I have enjoyed being the occasional client. I live full time in Las Vegas, but have really enjoyed having this option available to me when I am in Terre Haute. Through the MINDBODY app, it is easy to look at their schedule and book classes. Through their website, it is easy to book a 10 pack package to use while I am here. If I lived here, this would be the place I would practice full time. I think what I like most about Common Ground Yoga, as devout yogi of many years, is that Kelsey and her instructors are welcoming of everyone. Classes are not broken up into Level 1, Level 2 or advanced so much (although one of these might pop up from time to time). All classes can accommodate all levels, regardless if you are a devout yogi like me or a newbie. I find this kind of rare in a studio really. I am use to the devision of skills and here the motto is "all are welcome" and it works. I think all attendees to a class (including someone experienced like me), have something to be gained by simply the shared experience of a class that is authentic, connected, rooted and honest. And as Kelsey or another of the instructors as your guide, you can trust that you are being led in a good direction to understand the founding principles of a yoga practice that can stick with you for your first visit as a newbie to 100+, 200+, 300+ or maybe even 600+ visits. Congrats to Kelsey & Common Ground for their 4 years of business.

There isn't much to offer in town, but this place has kept me sane. All the teachers are amazing. Never once left a class feeling anything less but happy, rejuvenated, and relaxed no matter what time of day. Would recommend to any and all yogis. Whether new to the area or just passing through.

Discrimination, targeting, and harassment…read more My experiences with the Y this year have been awful. First my 16 year old son was attacked and beat up during a basketball game by a grown man. The worker stood there and watched the entire thing. When I called to ask for camera footage to press charges on the man who attacked my son I was dismissed as if it was no big deal. I called for 5 days trying to get management to work with me on filing a police report, they refused to take my calls or call me back. Fast forward to 6 months ago. My family has a plan there that is not used by everyone listed. We went in to change the members listed and paid for all new cards for the new members being listed. We weren't questioned, asked for ID, or told it was not allowed. Then a month later we were approached in the gym by staff and told that we needed to stop working out and come to the desk to discuss our account... IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. When I went to the counter I was told that the members scanning in did not match who was working out and that we needed to update our account members in order to use the facility. So AGAIN we updated the members using the accounts and paid for all new cards again, even though we had just done this. They made it seem like we were purposely sneaking in with someone else's account. I explained that we had just done this about a month ago and they responded with there was no record of it. So I agreed to pay for the cards but did advise them that I would not do this again. Fast forward to a week ago. I was approached by a staff member. AGAIN IN FRONT OF THE ENTIRE GYM AND ASKED TO COME DISCUSS MY ACCOUNT AT THE COUNTER OR I COULD LEAVE. Being approached so abruptly and rudely I stopped what I was doing and went to the counter. I was told yet again that the members scanning in were not who was actually present using the facility and that I would need to update the members listed. At this point I explained the previous issues with this same problem and told them I was not paying for new cards again but that staff needed to instead do their jobs correctly and actually change the members. Come to find out the members names were changed but they still had pictures in the system of the old members who were originally in the account. So they took our pictures then asked for ID to verify we were who we said we were. We were able to take the pictures but neither of us had our wallets inside so we were told we would have to leave and could not work out there anymore. I then asked for a member of management because not only is it ridiculous that this is still happening but my wife and I totally felt targeted and harassed by a particular staff member there named Micah, he is who each time this has been brought up was the one who asked staff to look into our accounts and see if they matched up. I found this out from another employee that works there. She said Micah knew us both from a previous gym I used to work at and that we were entering under someone else's account that we were not a part of and should be paying. Of course management was unavailable to speak with so the staff member called her manager Shanna at home and she stated that as long as we were added to the accounts and listed as members on the family plan that we were fine to work out and to just bring our ID's in the next time we were in. Meanwhile while at the counter Micah was in the gym facility asking my wife if everything was ok and if there was a problem. I'm guessing he felt guilty but she was very uncomfortable, as she does not like confrontation and felt that not only did he create confrontation for us both but also felt as if she was being harassed by him at this point. Fast forward to today. The why called us and asked that we not come back unless we made a new family plan or created a separate plan for my wife. They advised us that we had too many adults on the family plan and stated that we had been using the plan inaccurately and that my wife had been attending for free. I asked them how we could come for this long and not be advised of this rule and also how we could add us all on as many times as we did and why we weren't previously told that we weren't allowed to have that many adults, AS IT HAS BEEN APPROVED 3 times now. I was told it should have never been allowed and until the changes were made we were no longer welcome to use the facility. At this point I have come to realize that none of the employees know the policies and procedures. Maybe it's a rule and maybe it's not. Idk because I don't work there but I can say the embarrassment and harassment has been quite enough for us and we don't mind not coming back. We have had our kid attacked in this facility, we have been embarrassed in front of other members, we have been harassed about something they messed up multiple times as if it was our fault, not to mention the things I have seen them do to other members while in there working out. All about a dollar

For what it is, the Vigo County YMCA is a 3 star spot. Come on...its the Y!…read more I am a non-local that drops in to Terre Haute from time to time to visit family. I am an active athlete that seeks out any/all options for any/all exercise while I am in Terre Haute. The options around here in the Haute are not great or extensive, but I do believe that you do not need much in order to get active. For an $8 daily rate (no contract, no hassle...this part is vital to what is best for me), I can go to this YMCA and use their machines, free weights, attend a class or swim in the pool. This place is not the Ritz, with shower facilities being sub-par, things look run down and equipment is dated and tired. The place is simple, basic and clean, although in need of a face lift. BUT...again, in order to keep in shape, I believe you do not need things to be fancy, you simply need the knowledge of what to do and the right tools. The YMCA provides this for me. I have attended a few classes, including a H.I.I.T, which was basic, but quite fun, fast paced and provided me a good sweat. From body pump to chair yoga, you can pretty much find all options at the Y. Being an advanced athlete of sorts, I was in fear of not finding a good mix to push me to my normal levels. From a good stair step machine to a perky H.I.I.T instructor that kept things moving, when it comes to fitness, 50% is you pushing yourself and 50% is the activity itself. I often just need to be in the group environment in order to get me working hard versus simply working out on my own. Again, the YMCA provides this for me when I find myself in Terre Haute. I also was given a free 5 day pass on a recent visit to encourage visitors to experience the Y. As a daily rate person and not a full fledge member, this was a great unexpected perk. If I lived here, it would encourage me to join. I believe it was part of a limited time summer program, but still a great deal. I had difficulty getting connected to the right personal trainer for me here at the Y ( I was seeking an American College of Sports Medicine trainer and it was not that they did not have one, but the schedule to work with this person was not going to work for the trainers schedule), but they have options and wanted to help me find another person. Although I did not end up working with one of their trainers, they do have trainers, nutritionists and wellness coaches to help you out in your fitness goals. The instructors seem welcoming and the environment seems like everyone knows one another and treat each other like family. I am always a little caught off guard at the prayer at the end of a class, but it is the Young Men's Christian Association, so to be expected. So although not the best gym out there by any stretch, it will do just fine for what I am looking for. Planet Hollywood or Anytime Fitness are going to be superior to the YMCA in design, layout, equipment and decor, but the YMCA allows me to visit on a daily rate and this is the most important piece to me, for I was not going to sign a contract. I don't need fancy, I just need to sweat.
