PUBLIC WARNING: Regarding the Business Practices and Ethics of Dennis Waits…read more I am sharing this strictly from a crime victim's perspective to warn the public about Dennis Waits' highly questionable billing practices, manipulation of funds, and overall business ethics. After his client was denied bond, a divorce was filed in March, legally freezing all marital assets. Dennis Waits entered the criminal case on March 30. On April 2, he filed a bond review motion where he explicitly acknowledged in writing that a divorce was active.Exactly one week later, a marital IRA check for was issued. The exact same day that check arrived, Dennis Waits completely withdrew the bond motion. The fight to get his client out of jail vanished the second the cash hit his pocket. He promised his client he could get him released, giving someone in a vulnerable position completely false hope just to lock down a contract and use them as a fast payday. When my divorce attorney filed a Motion to Restrain the respondent and his agents from touching the IRA on April 30th, Dennis Waits' immediate response just days later on May 5th was to file a motion to extend the criminal trial out by months. The judge formally signed and granted the restraining order on May 12th. When confronted as a third party holding funds that a family court judge has since officially awarded to me, his excuse was that he "had a lot of hours in" and that his client paid him for legal fees. I have a clear audio recording proving he admitted to taking these frozen funds. Filing a recycled bond motion only to drop it when a check arrives, and then delaying the trial right after a financial restraining order is filed, raises serious questions about his business practices and ethics. When you look into public records, this scramble for fast cash makes total sense. Dennis Waits has a documented history of public state tax liens, including thousands of dollars in unpaid withholding taxes for his own firm's employees. If a lawyer cannot even manage his own business taxes and owes the state, it is no wonder he would questionably pocket frozen family assets without a second thought. The public deserves absolute transparency regarding the business methods of Dennis Waits.

I explained clearly that without an approved budget, we lose overtime -- yet instead of understanding, I was met with threats when I couldn't pay immediately after court. I'm a single, hardworking mother with no living family, having just bought my first home nine months ago. I'm trying to refinance and take out an equity loan, so I can't even open a credit card right now. I recently went through an incredibly traumatic and unjust custody case, filled with false accusations and parental alienation. Despite being the stable parent, the court ruled against me, and I'm now ordered to pay child support for the child my ex kept from me -- something I simply cannot afford right now. On top of that, I've faced major unexpected expenses: an emergency root canal and crown, a broken window repair, and now car repairs -- all of which I've provided proof for. What I considered when I made my decision to hire him was that he has prior experience as a prosecutor, he works part time as a judge, he has over 20 years of experience in criminal justice, and he knows the prosecutors at the Olathe Municipal Court which is where I was cited to court. With all his background he can see the perspective of a prosecutor and a judge in order to attain the best outcome. In my case, I was illegally pulled over in Olathe because an officer driving behind me, ran my tags and they showed the owner with a suspended driver's license. The car is in my dad's name and we look nothing alike, he's 47 years old and I'm 22. There is no question that there was no reason for the cop to pull me over unless he was completely sure that the driver matched the description of the one with the suspended license. After I showed him my DL, registration, and insurance, he changed the topic and allegedly claims he smelled marijuana in the vehicle. Truth is, there was marijuana in my vehicle but it's been hidden for so long that the car couldn't possibly smell like weed. In the moment I just thought to myself that I can't prove what he claims to smell or not and thought that he could just use that as probable cause to search my vehicle anyway. Unfortunately I was not very informed about the dos and don'ts at a traffic stop so I just decided to be honest and gave up the marijuana I had in the vehicle. The reason I know he was lying was because it was less than a gram in a sealed container, which was in a zip lock bag, which was in a shoe, which was under the matt next to the spare tire in my trunk. He must have a great sense of smell if he could detect that all the way from the driver's window when it's been in the trunk for weeks. He was even shocked when I admitted to having some because I fell in his trap. My charges ended up being possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. When I met with John he seemed pretty secure of how he was going to work this case. What complicated my case a bit was the fact that I'm a temporary resident here in the United States and I had to resolve this issue by the time I had to renew my immigration status which was right around the corner. Luckily John was able to work out a deal in which I ended up taking a drug abuse evaluation and attending an eight hour drug and alcohol class. After I completed the class and got my certificate, my case was dismissed. If I would've been convicted, that would've caused a big conflict with my immigration renewal and I was in no disposition to risk that. Overall John handled my case very professional, in a timely manner, and took into consideration my special circumstances I was in, to get the best possible outcome. The only minor complaint I have would just be better communication with the client. Or maybe it was just me being my first time in trouble, but I just wanted to be up to date with each step of the way because I was worried sick. Besides that, very good attorney and I highly recommend him.

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE…read more I am very dissatisfied with how my case was handled. After finally reaching an agreement with the opposing counsel, they refused to honor the agreement. Unfortunately, Mr O'Connor did nothing to see that the agreement was honored; he made absolutely no effort on my behalf. This could have been resolved in my favor during the final court hearing however, Mr. O'Connor did not bother to show up in court that day for the hearing. In addition to mishandling my case, Mr. O'Connor's behavior toward me was utterly repugnant. While we were preparing for the hearing, Mr. O'Connor was extremely impatient and condescending. When I hired him I told him that I had never been in court before and had no idea what to expect. Rather than explain what the Judge's expectations would be, how best to answer questions, and walking me through the process, he belittled me and even yelled at me. Mr. O'Connor turned a situation that was stressful and upsetting to begin with into a complete nightmare. I have placed this review in the past and removed it each time due to threats from Mr O'Connor. I feel that it is my right to share my negative experience with this law firm, however, Mr O'Connor has threatened to sue me for defamation of character if I do not remove this bad review. I am not removing it this time because everything I have mentioned in my review is true Mr O'Connor was very rude to me while handling my case and he did not achieve the results he promised me, my experience overall was a negative one. Based on my personal experience, I would not recommend this law firm to anyone else. The fact that Mr O'Connor threatens me every time I have tried to leave this account of my personal experience with him as my lawyer just adds to my negative experience with this law firm.
