I've had the good fortune of having Matt represent me in both criminal and civil cases…read more Upon my first meeting with Mr. O'Connor, I was quickly impressed. Everyone should aspire to be as empathetic as he is. Matt understands you're not a client or a number. You are a person. No matter what you're going through, it's not the world's largest problem. But, it's the largest problem in your world. Matthew recognizes this. Sometimes people make mistakes. And most times, there is a price to pay for those mistakes. Mr. O'Connor will be upfront about that. He will want to know every minute detail of your case. When he hears something that may have violated your rights, you will see him look up from his note-taking, his eyebrows will rise, and his wide open eyes will ignite. Matt despises injustice. As the accused, you are a trophy and/or revenue to an extremely long list of corporations and people who derive their income from your conviction. Matt knows he's all you have. His methodical, but out of the box approach to my case achieved optimum results. At the O'Connor Law Office you may notice pictures of both Robert Kennedy and Muhammed Ali. I believe that combination epitomizes Matt. Like Kennedy, he's a believer in our justice system, as long as everyone gets treated equally. You will understand his skill as an arbitrator when you see his interaction with those in a courtroom. Bailiffs, fellow attorneys, prosecutors, clerks, judges...everyone. He is widely respected and liked. It's probably rare the Ali side of Matthew needs to come out. But when your anxiety levels are at its peak, there'll be no greater comfort knowing that when you bust through those courtroom doors, that the smartest guy in the room is in your corner.

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE…read more I am very dissatisfied with how my case was handled. After finally reaching an agreement with the opposing counsel, they refused to honor the agreement. Unfortunately, Mr O'Connor did nothing to see that the agreement was honored; he made absolutely no effort on my behalf. This could have been resolved in my favor during the final court hearing however, Mr. O'Connor did not bother to show up in court that day for the hearing. In addition to mishandling my case, Mr. O'Connor's behavior toward me was utterly repugnant. While we were preparing for the hearing, Mr. O'Connor was extremely impatient and condescending. When I hired him I told him that I had never been in court before and had no idea what to expect. Rather than explain what the Judge's expectations would be, how best to answer questions, and walking me through the process, he belittled me and even yelled at me. Mr. O'Connor turned a situation that was stressful and upsetting to begin with into a complete nightmare. I have placed this review in the past and removed it each time due to threats from Mr O'Connor. I feel that it is my right to share my negative experience with this law firm, however, Mr O'Connor has threatened to sue me for defamation of character if I do not remove this bad review. I am not removing it this time because everything I have mentioned in my review is true Mr O'Connor was very rude to me while handling my case and he did not achieve the results he promised me, my experience overall was a negative one. Based on my personal experience, I would not recommend this law firm to anyone else. The fact that Mr O'Connor threatens me every time I have tried to leave this account of my personal experience with him as my lawyer just adds to my negative experience with this law firm.

He talked to me about my case and I told him that I couldn't miss much more of work or else I would lose my job. He got my court date as quickly as I could of imagined, and ended up having my charges reduced and I ended up just paying a fine, NO jail time, and didn't lose my job! I would recommend him for anyone who doesn't want to go to jail and showed a lot of concern for my not only keeping my job, but also, turned out to be a great person all around. Thanks, Brian!

The PFA was eventually removed after my ex secured the home and temp custody, of the children. At that time I hurredly rushed through to find an attorney. This is a mistake that I will never make again. Not all attorneys or firms are created equal. Not all representation is good or beneficial. Which was proven by Tyler who was professional and informative. Tyler called out the efforts that filing this 2nd PFA was committed to doing which was an effort to keep my children from me. Unfortunately this happens... Tyler worked with opposing counsel and was able to get it withdrawn. Even if it's not valid...the courts dont and won't necessarily take that same stream of thought. Which is why the attorney in your corner means everything in your case. Divorce isn't about bad relationships it's about whom knows and wields the best understanding of the law. So don't rush to obtain someone with a juris doctorate. Do some research folks. Wish I'd done so previously. This firm didnt handle my divorce but I do have an expectation for service and quality of care now that this firm set the standard. I bet if I had this firm my entire experience with the courts would have been different. I felt represented with this firm. After consulting 3 attorneys and comparing the pros and cons. I decided to hire John because of the…read morebackground he has with handling criminal justice. What I considered when I made my decision to hire him was that he has prior experience as a prosecutor, he works part time as a judge, he has over 20 years of experience in criminal justice, and he knows the prosecutors at the Olathe Municipal Court which is where I was cited to court. With all his background he can see the perspective of a prosecutor and a judge in order to attain the best outcome. In my case, I was illegally pulled over in Olathe because an officer driving behind me, ran my tags and they showed the owner with a suspended driver's license. The car is in my dad's name and we look nothing alike, he's 47 years old and I'm 22. There is no question that there was no reason for the cop to pull me over unless he was completely sure that the driver matched the description of the one with the suspended license. After I showed him my DL, registration, and insurance, he changed the topic and allegedly claims he smelled marijuana in the vehicle. Truth is, there was marijuana in my vehicle but it's been hidden for so long that the car couldn't possibly smell like weed. In the moment I just thought to myself that I can't prove what he claims to smell or not and thought that he could just use that as probable cause to search my vehicle anyway. Unfortunately I was not very informed about the dos and don'ts at a traffic stop so I just decided to be honest and gave up the marijuana I had in the vehicle. The reason I know he was lying was because it was less than a gram in a sealed container, which was in a zip lock bag, which was in a shoe, which was under the matt next to the spare tire in my trunk. He must have a great sense of smell if he could detect that all the way from the driver's window when it's been in the trunk for weeks. He was even shocked when I admitted to having some because I fell in his trap. My charges ended up being possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. When I met with John he seemed pretty secure of how he was going to work this case. What complicated my case a bit was the fact that I'm a temporary resident here in the United States and I had to resolve this issue by the time I had to renew my immigration status which was right around the corner. Luckily John was able to work out a deal in which I ended up taking a drug abuse evaluation and attending an eight hour drug and alcohol class. After I completed the class and got my certificate, my case was dismissed. If I would've been convicted, that would've caused a big conflict with my immigration renewal and I was in no disposition to risk that. Overall John handled my case very professional, in a timely manner, and took into consideration my special circumstances I was in, to get the best possible outcome. The only minor complaint I have would just be better communication with the client. Or maybe it was just me being my first time in trouble, but I just wanted to be up to date with each step of the way because I was worried sick. Besides that, very good attorney and I highly recommend him.

Regarding the criminal charges, I received 12 months of diversion. Considering the fact that I had a prior arrest and the severity of my charges(s), this was more than I could hope for and I'm very grateful for John's work. On successful completion of the diversion agreement, I will have no public record. I would highly recommend Mr. John E. Harvell for anyone facing criminal charges in Kansas.
