I'm new to England, and the first thing everyone has said to me is that I absolutely HAVE to try…read morethe Indian food. I consider myself a fan of Indian food (and spicy food in general) and have certainly been to some good Indian places in America. This one is a 3 minute walk from my house and open late, so I thought I'd give it a shot.
In short, the worst Indian food I've ever had. I ordered simple: butter chicken, cheese nan, and plain rice. I clarified with the man taking my order that the butter chicken was not tomato based (tomato is the realm of tikka masala, not butter chicken; but I've found in the past that some less-than-inspired Indian restaurants use tomato anyway (usually in almost everything they serve) to cover up their lack of ideas, detail, or quality ingredients. Anyway, the man assured me there is no tomato, but I never would have thought to ask if they absolutely loaded it with sugar; why would I? But it was, so much so that it practically tasted like candy. I'm not sure if they used plain table sugar or a ton of sweetened ingredients, but this butter chicken had no creaminess or savoriness whatsoever; just plops of orange sugar-sauce.
In addition to the abysmal chicken entree, the "cheese nan" that I ordered was burnt black on the entire bottom, had no discernible cheese in it, and was ALSO sweet! I might as well have been eating a burnt French pastry. To top it off, the plain white rice was dry and crusty. And when I asked for a fork and napkins for my to-go order, I was given 2 spoons, no napkins, and shoo'ed away. There was nothing positive about this experience, and certainly not worth the £12 I forked over for this poorly prepared, sugar-loaded garbage. I'm sure there are good Indian restaurants in London, but this is not one of them. For the good of your stomach and wallet, stay away!
