For me sushi is a fantastic meal. It's really the confluence of flavour, texture, and presentation in bite sized morsels. In Japan sushi training and apprenticeship you can spend up to two years preparing and making the rice to understand how it should be seasoned.
Fast forward to 2015 and in Quebec there appear to be two main sushi franchise chains that are pulling out to take the lead in places here there are little options for sushi. Those would be Sushi Shop (part of the MTY group conglomerate) and YUZU (based out of QC). Before I was not really a fan of both. Reason being is I believe both season their rice and soy sauce way too sweet! However I have come back to give them both a try as I crave sushi while on business travel.
This location in Rimouski is newer and located on the W side of downtown.
I came in and ordered three rolls:
Dragon- nice eel sauce and texture 3.5/5
Fusion- deep fried awesomeness crispy and fresh fasting 4/5
California - staple of how sushi is done for me at a restaurant 3/5
Sushi was actually surprisingly better than I expected for this curmudgeon.
The key I have learned with the sushi shops is do not (I repeat) just pick something up from their cooler fridge even though it may be more convenient. You have no way to know if the rolls were done an hour ago or ten hours ago! Order up rolls to be made up while you are there. Listen young grasshopper, and you will enjoy fresher rolls. This was the key for my visit as the rolls just tasted a degree of fresher!
Price here for quality rolls however is not cheap. Just around $31 (tax and tip in) for my three rolls. This would be below $20 in Vancouver and probably just over $20 in Toronto (depending on location).
Funky house music was playing while. I was eating my meal. Interior was clean and bright. Service on upper side of good!
A decent meal when I was expecting mediocrity! read more
