This is another large park in Beverly. It is named for Amy L. Barnard, the daughter of the man who…read moredonated the land for the park (back in the day, 1902). Once upon a time there were tennis courts and a wading pool, and the park would be flooded in winter for ice skating. The wading pool and whatnot was demolished, however, by the late 60s, and the park is no longer used as a skating rink (though once it welcomed up to 5,000 people). There are few benches in the park as well, and I'm sure it would be a nice little place to take a walk and do some people-watching in the warmer weather months, as well as have a picnic. There is area for folks to play baseball and soccer, too. Barnard Park is probably fifty percent larger than nearby Hurley Park, and it too is located very near a Rock Island Metra station; the 103rd Street Station is less than a block away. There is a play lot in addition to the large grassy park. The play lot takes up not a lot of space in the overall area of the park. The play lot is an engineered wood surface, not a soft-surface playground, but it is accessible. However, there do not appear to be bathroom facilities at this park.

This is my boyfriends favorite park in the area. Decent sized playground for big and little kids…read more Also plenty of grassland for a picnic! Several benches scattered through the area, only 1 fountain but no field house or potties nearby, so keep that in mind when you plan a trip here!

South of 87th Street you enter the parking lot at about 88th Street on Western Avenue ... north of 87th Street you enter the parking lot right on 87th Street just east of Western. The north portion runs all the way down to the train tracks at about 83rd Street, about four blocks. The south portion runs up to 90th Street and partially - on the east side - over to about 91st Street. Either way you are in for a treat. This expansive park has loads of room to spread out, whether a summer picnic group or a small family gathering with a cookout. In fact, during the pandemic, just visiting and sitting in the parking lot with your friends in lawn chairs is a way to keep active socially. There are a couple of shelters on each side of the park, but these undoubtedly require reservations. There is enough room for a pickup family flag-football game. The south section is mostly flat, while the north end is hilly, and they used to have toboggan slides there. The parking lots also hold scores of cars. Give this place a try and you'll enjoy.

For this review, I am focusing on the indoor pool…read more I am amazed that this pool doesn't get more hype. When I worked in social services in Englewood and West Lawn I used to bring my kids here all the time, and they always loved it. It has a great atmosphere and everyone is friendly. Let me tell you -I was completely shocked the first time I came here. This isn't just your average community pool. This is a gigantic, Olympic sized pool that has glass walls and a high, HIGH glass ceiling and is lit entirely by sun light. It is grand and clean and gorgeous. The air is warm and moist and people are here all winter. It's too bad I don't live nearby, since I would definitely take advantage of it. It's surrounded by a very pleasant residential neighborhood of small family homes. The park itself is lovely, and it's great place to have events and barbeques in the summer. The one thing that annoys me, though, are the hours. What are they? Not that many people know. The Chicago Parks District website doesn't have up to date information. And when you call and ask them, they give you accurate info about 50% of the time. You have to actually go there in person and ask for the open swim hours, and do so every few weeks. That said, hell, it's run by the city, so what do you expect? Still, this is a gem in the parks system.
