Youth World is a non profit organization spearheaded by Darla S. My first encounter with Youth World was as a volunteer at their playground build earlier this year. My job involved checking volunteers in, having them fill out waivers, and serving lunch. In the limited interactions I had with Darla after being introduced, I saw her great passion for the residents of South Dallas. Youth World hosts after school and summer camps. The kids who come to Youth World are largely minority and come from low income (often one parent) households. They did not have anywhere to play outside minus a big open field. Enter the Dallas Stars and Pro Players Foundations and the playground idea became a reality. Unfortunately, the playground was burned in an act of arson a few short months after being built. But the same individuals and groups who made the first playground a reality joined forces a second time to build a playground for the kids at Youth World.
In addition to making sure that the kids within the community are fed and given quality after school and summer programming, Youth World also provides food and other resources for their mothers as well. My limited time volunteering and attending events at Youth World has shown what a great organization it is within the South Dallas community. read more
