Delivery is free of charge within a five mile radius, or you can visit the shop. The 'shop' is a 'no-frills' affair, a double garage at the rear of the Patitucci family home. So you can rest assured that you are not paying through the nose for expensive premises - no, sir! Their produce is of four grades - Regular, Local, Organic and Paolo's. 'Paolo's' denotes produce grown in the greenhouses and market gardens to the rear of the garage - as far as I know, I would consider it a sort of 'uncertified organic' as my information is that Paolo does not use chemical pesticides, etc. Paolo is the grandfather of the family, who moved from southern Italy to Lancashire in 1955, and is as devoted a market gardener as you could hope to find. Plus, with Paolo's characterful vegetables and herbs, and additional organic market produce, the super-healthy niche market is well catered for. They also stock a nice selection of organic delicatessen items, plus homemade jams, etc. The business side of things is now run by Paolo's son Vince, who is another fantastic gentleman. From what I've seen of him, I would say Vince is a bit of a dude. Such as - when it was still glass milk bottles - carrying two crates of milk in each hand. Without braggadocio. Lastly, they are totally fair and honest, which is a boon when buying fresh produce.

The Salad Bowl sells fruit, vegetables, herbs, spices, local butter, jams, chutneys, curds, local eggs, and some quality juices. It's a small and traditional shop which you can clearly tell has been there for longer than most of us have been around! Sticking with tradition, the fresh vegetables and fruit are both inside the store and outside on display, but stepping into the modern age, the owners also take photos of their newly available produce and other aspects of the business, and post them on Twitter, to great effect, especially when it comes to making you aware of new things to try, such as "strasberries", white carrots, and purple broccoli. The staff are friendly and pleasant, and have the traditional style of going and picking up the individual items you may want if you ask for them. This is especially good for the elderly and more infirm customers. They are also happy to inform you about their current products, and make any recommendations. They also do veg boxes and fruit boxes of various sizes, allowing you to have a regular delivery to your home of fresh and varied produce, and for a pretty damn good price too! It's also particularly pleasant to be able to try local products, such as locally sourced eggs and locally grown potatoes as well as local butter, which also boosts the feeling of supporting a local business and local life. But to be honest, when the quality and service is this high when shopping locally, I can't see why anyone would rather shop anywhere else, and certainly not at supermarkets! What I like especially about this shop is how you dont have to purchase your apples in huge bags with 2 kilos in them. Instead you can buy just one or two items if you prefer, so theres no wastage. They stock some good exotic varieties on sale too, I love to sample different fruits which Ive never seen before. The staff are extremly helpfull too and will check in the back if theres something you want and you cant see it on the shelves.

Cumberland, which cooked up beautifully without an ounce of excess grease, none of the usual "scum" that escapes when you grill bangers, and they tasted amazing. Definitely worth repeat visits to work my way through their entire range. Also have a good range of "semi-prepared" meat products, e.g. marinated steaks/chops. Spotlessly clean shop and really friendly, informative staff who are more than happy to give advice and recommendations. Makes me proud to be a carnivore!
