I currently have an infant enrolled at the Young School. I agree with most, if not all of the reviews written regarding the infant program and facility (up to 6/25/2015). I will not repeat the reviews written by others, but rather discuss other points or expand upon certain points that I think may be useful. The infant program is required to have the same two teachers for two years in a particular class. This is a HUGE plus because this develops and maintains a special relationship between the baby and teacher, fostering consistency and routine. This also builds a relationship between the parent and teacher and allows for effective communication and trust in caring for your child. Other daycares have rotating teachers or teachers that are not really designated to a particular set of kids - this makes it difficult to maintain consistency in anything particular about caring for your child. Each of the baby rooms have windows on one side that allows for the sun to pour in and a wall-sized window on the hallway side. This may seem like a minor detail, but for me it was important to know that my baby was not going to be in a box-like room as some other daycares are set up. The wall-sized window facing the hallways was comforting to me as a new mom because it allows for transparency with each classroom, literally and figuratively. Some parents may overlook this (I certainly did), but the separate nap room is so important. The room is quiet, dark and plays soft music. My baby is a huge napper and this separate room allows for her to take uninterrupted naps. My friend enrolled her baby in another daycare with an open concept and the poor baby can't sleep well during the day because of the noise. The rooms are not filled with bouncers, swings, or any of the latest and greatest gizmos. This may not sound nice for some, but I loved this fact. 1. The babies are not overstimulated during the day, 2. I know that she will not be placed in the swing for a significant portion of the day to be placated, 3. This makes me not feel guilty when I have to use the swing or bouncer or saucer at home when I have to cook, clean, etc. It reinforces the fact that there is a lot more proactive care-giving going on than simply watching over the child. The school is very health-conscious. Sure it's annoying to have the 24-hour fever free policy, but it's for the good of everyone. There are alerts that go out when viruses are going around, sick policies change according to these situations, and the school sends out reminders for vaccination updates. The teachers, part time helpers, and directors (Beth and Stephanie) are incredibly sweet people who genuinely care about the development and well-being of your child. It may sound cheesy, but each person exudes this warmth and there are always smiles on the faces of the kids and babies, which is most telling. It's adorable to hear 2/3 yr olds say hi to my baby by name when my husband drops her off in the morning. Goes to show the school has a nice "family-feel" to it. As a first time mom, I was willing to spend whatever amount to be comfortable with the care my baby got while I was at work. A good day care in this area is going to be pricey - Young School is either similar, if not identical in price to most of the other competitive daycares. At the end of the day, you want a safe, enriching, and loving environment for your baby and at Young School, you get what you pay for and more. read more

Our son has attended the Young School at Kendall Ridge since infancy and there has not been a day that I have second guessed that decision. Everyday my husband and I know that we can go to work worry free! When I was in my 2nd month of pregnancy, I started touring care facilities, interviewing nannies, checking out in-home care and talking to other parents. I was on a mission to find the very best. Some child care visits resulted in me walking out the front doors within minutes of entering, others I left mid-way thru the tour and some took awhile to delete from my list based on a simple gut feeling. My interviews with nannies just didn't satisfy my hesitations with one-on-one care and in-home care with multi-aged children sent chills up my spine for various reasons. After a few of these experiences, a conversation with a good friend put me on the path to discover the Young School and I am forever grateful! I scheduled a tour and literally knew within minutes of entering the front doors that this would be our home-away-from-home for our son. The front lobby is open, airy, clean and most importantly secure. The facility as a whole is clean, organized, full of natural light, and again....secure. The administrators are the first staff members you see and each parent is welcomed with a smile, a hello, and/or a wave. Their door is literally always open and parents are free to pop their heads in at any time to ask quick questions or find answers to concerns. The infant care is amazing and truly offers a safe and peaceful environment. All other infant care facilities that I toured satisfied the States ratio requirements by throwing up partitions and calling them "rooms". They weren't rooms, it felt like a baby warehouse and the noise levels were not conducive to providing a soothing place for infants to get the rest they need. At the Young School, 6 infants are in a separate room----a real room----with their 2 care providers. Within that room, there is a 2nd room which is used exclusively for naps. You will find no contraptions that the infants are strapped into at the Young School. They are either being held to be fed or soothed or they are learning to explore on their own at their own developmental pace. As the children get older, they are moved to different rooms with age appropriate toys and for a change of scenery but STILL stay with their same infant teachers. By the time year 3 & 4 roll around, the children are already preparing for pre-school and Kindergarten by "learning by exploration". There are field trips, holiday functions, cultural exposure, reports and feedback from the teachers, volunteer and chaperoning opportunities, parades, laughs, smiles, and happy kids. And then there are the teachers----the true heart of the school. They somehow find the energy, love, dedication, patience and kindness to ensure that the kids arrive excited to be there and leave happy to share their experiences of the day with Mommy and Daddy. The teachers are always happy to hear from parents who either need some guidance, reassurance, have questions, give feedback.....I literally have never had a "bad" experience with any teacher in the almost 5 years of attendance. I really cannot say enough and hope that I have at least scratched the surface in explaining how truly wonderful our experience has been! read more

When we were moving to the area four years ago we interviewed and toured about 10 different childcares in the area. When we went to visit The Young School on Tamar Drive we were asked to come back later for a scheduled visit because they didn't want to disturb the children. I was a bit miffed but came back the next day to the tour and to hear more. And, basically, I was sold. All the other childcare centers just really didn't compare. I could tell you about a hundred reasons why they are the best, but what I suggest is that you go for a tour and see for yourself. If you wont go for yourself, here are some great reasons why you should: 1. The infant care is set up so that the babies work with the same two teachers for the entire first two years of their lives. Rather than moving from room to room, babies get to make really strong bonds that help them grow during those foundational years. 2. The teachers are not just the kindest people I've met, and really love each child. But they help me be a better parent by kindly suggesting helping tips and encouraging me when they can see that I'm tired or having a bad day. They are really just an extended part of my family. 3. The cottage for the older children is set up to be one large room that is divided into three separate areas; each area is also divided into areas with play stations. This may sound strange, because there are children from the ages of about 2-5 (or 6) in that space. But what this does is allows children a ton more options for self guided play. When you see that giant play area it makes you want to get in there and play as well. 4. The schools philosophy is that children grow at their own pace. That may sound fluffy, but it can be difficult to remember that each child needs to be supported in their own way. For example, the older children do self portraits to explore where they are at emotionally and with their fine motor skills. Activities are then provided to help children when they are at different stages. 5. They don't believe in problem children. It was my oldest that pulled the fire alarm. He was also a biter (thanks to his previous school). There was never a discussion of how to punish him. It was always about how to help him make better decisions, how to redirect him, and how to get him to express himself. That says a lot. 6. The children come first. I started writing this saying how I was asked to come back the next day that was a better time for the children. That really says it. It isn't about getting more people in the door. It is about making sure that the children are well cared for. And when that is the first priority, everything else follows. I love my children. Knowing that they are in a place where they are loved and cherished almost as much as I love them makes it easy to go to work each day. I feel really lucky that we've had three children attend The Young School. read more

We love The Young School (TYS) and are thrilled with how they have inspired our son and helped him learn and develop. As new parents, we were quite nervous sending our son to pre-school for the first time. Having come from the sole watch of a nanny for his first two years, we weren't sure what to expect. Needless to say, it didn't take long for TYS to convince us that the teachers show an amazing level of love and support. They take a Reggio approach, which is somewhat similar to Montessori, and do a great job of encouraging exploration and creative play. There's also a significant emphasis on sensory play, at least for the two year olds. And their curriculum for the Pre-K classes align to our county's Kindergarten curriculum, helping the student prepare for what's ahead. It is absolutely amazing how positive the environment is. They start and end everyday with group hugs. We've never seen toddlers show so much compassion and affection towards one another. So much so, when our son was tackled by his cousin who's 10 months younger at a family get-together, he looked shocked. Despite being around dozens of two, three, and four year olds everyday, I don't think he's ever experienced anything remotely like that. TYS works hard to promote a fun and creative environment in which the kids can learn. Our son participated in activities such as finger painting on aluminum foil, creating cool little crafts from leaves, helping to plant and water flowers, creating sweet little Mother's Day gifts, just to name a couple. TYS also takes cool field trips to places like Clark's Elioak farm and hosts special events, such as an international thanksgiving day, a Halloween parade, a butterfly picnic, and a festival of lights, water, shadows, and reflections. And I shouldn't forget to mention the hamster named "Awesome" (the kids named him) that welcomes us at the cottage entrance. We're really looking forward to the summer months, when they have water play every day, which our son absolutely loves to do. Additionally, we have found TYS to be on top of all communications to parents. They send regular newsletters detailing upcoming events and important reminders to parents, and quickly notify parents of any illnesses reported at the school. In the end all parents have to make their own choice, but in our experience TYS is a great place to send your child. We are convinced that they take their profession to the highest level and want to see their kids achieve their maximum potential. read more

As new parents, we wanted to find the best daycare/school for our first child. We looked at a number of different places, but immediately fell in love with The Young School. The facility was spacious, but had a very bright and warm feeling to it. The teachers/caregivers all seemed kind and loving - you can tell by all the children's demeanor: they looked content, comfortable, and even happy to be there. The infant rooms were clean, bright, colorful, and peaceful looking. It had a modern, updated look - the carpet, furniture, walls, etc. all looked well kept. If my memory serves me right, I don't believe there were not a lot (if any) of accessory infant seater products - swings, bouncers, etc. - which tells me that the caregivers are paying more attention to the infants instead of just sitting them in a swing or bouncer all day. It seems like they'd be pretty interactive with my little one. When we went to visit the facility, the infants looked happy, not in any distress. Although we were only there for a few minutes, all the infants appeared to like their caregivers and seemed obviously comforted by them. The director that gave us the tour knew each infant by name - nice little bonus. We focused on the infant rooms, but the other classes were impressive as well. The amount and type of activities The Young School provided seemed very stimulating and age-appropriate for physical, mental, and emotional growth. A lot of the reason why we decided to enroll in The Young School was because we were so impressed with their toddler+ programs. All very well thought out, allowing the children to express themselves in different ways, not limiting to what we, as adults, feel they should express. So as our child grows into these programs, we know he'll be in good hands. Overall, we were very impressed with The Young School and all that it has to offer. We are definitely nervous as new parents, sending our first and only child to spend the majority of the day/week with people that aren't his parents. So by no means are we "excited" to send our child to this school. But compared to the other schools, we feel the least nervous and most "excited" about sending him to The Young School. read more

When we were investigating daycares/pre-schools three years ago for our first child, The Young School at Kendall Ridge was the first place we visited...it was also our last! We had been given the good word already about TYS from a couple of different co-workers whose children had graduated from the program, which made it easy to place at the top of our list. And, I have to say, from the minute we stepped into the place, we knew we weren't going to check out any competitors. It just felt right. For starters, when you walk in, you know this is a place kids are going to love. Their mark is everywhere, from pictures they've drawn, to sculptures they've created, to the class project collage of Gustav Klimt's "The Kiss," one of the most impressive things I've ever seen created by high schoolers, much less four and five year olds. Then there are the teachers, the heart and soul of TYS. Every single one of them loves the children as if they were their own. They love coming to work every day, and it shows. Our daughter constantly tells us she doesn't want to go to Kindergarten next year because she doesn't want to meet new friends or new teachers. She wants to stay at The Young School forever! We're also big fans of the RIE philosophy, which really allows and encourages children to, without knowing it, take a bit of ownership in their education and exploration of the world in which they live. We like the fact that there are no buzzing beeping lights-flashing toys (and the teachers probably are, too). Children get more than enough exposure to manufactured, passive entertainment outside of the classroom. TYS serves as sort of a safe haven in that regard. By eschewing things that turn them into passive observers, TYS empowers children to conceptualize and create their own entertainment. This translates very well into the educational aspects of learning to read, write, and grasp the basics of simple mathematics. So, as soon as we knew our second child was on the way, we reserved a spot for him ASAP! And, we're happy to say, he's one of the latest additions to the family at TYS. It really is a family atmosphere, and a place I know we and our children will never forget. read more

As any new parent enrolling their firstborn child to daycare, my wife and I visited many different centers with tons of questions. We were looking for some place for our child to be first and foremost safe, an environment of love&care, and foster healthy growth&development. TYS stood out, and the last 6 months here, reinforces on a daily basis that we made the correct choice. Some of things that stood out: 1. Facility: great location, convenient. Not that I'm asian, but I do love the fact that shoes are taken off in the rooms. The place is clean with spacious rooms, filled with developmentally appropriate toys. As the children grow, they move on as a class to the next room (ie, infant to todfant to toddler classrooms). 2. Leadership / Curriculum: the larger organization has a philosophy and curriculum, which makes things structured. At Kendall ridge, Stephanie and Beth both do a great job of keeping families updated on the ever evolving activities and aspects of the curriculum each class is going through through newsweek. In addition, any other news, ie illnesses, are shared appropriately with prompt updates. All questions, concerns, and feedback are addressed professionally. 3. Teachers / Individual Care: There are 2 main teachers per class, who have been spectaculuar from day 1. They follow the children through the different classrooms to give the continuity of care that is needed. At the same time, there are numerous teachers around, and the non-permanent teachers are as dedicated and loving to the children. Everyone knows each child by name and by their individual characteristics/personality, including teachers from other classrooms. 4. Community: a homey feel at kendall ridge created by other families and teachers with numerous extra-curricular and outside activities to share. In summary, TYS stands out for its clean facility, structured curriculum with strong leadership, personal care by genuine teachers, and overall great community. read more

We currently have one infant enrolled. The young school was the last day care center we had visited and it topped the list. As far as the its space and the location at Kendall Ridge, there is no competition among the other centers. The are many wide open rooms for the children to spread out and play. They have 2 cottages each with a infant, todfant, and pre-toddler room. Each of these rooms is roughly 600 sqft and the infant and todfant rooms have a separate crib space with a door for quiet nap times. The other centers we visited, which include Columbia Academy on rt108, KinderCare off Columbia Gateway, The Goddard School off Center Park, and Celebree off Rt 40, we all very cramped and all of them reside in strip malls, busy with day-to-day traffic and by standers. The cost at this pre-school is about the same as Goddard, a little more than the others mentioned, but less than Montessori on 103, which we did not visit. The building is fully detached, with its own parking lot and a very private atmosphere, tucked away against a forested backdrop in entirely a residential location. This aspect is incredibly unique among day care centers. With all the suburban wildlife and the adjacent Columbia walking paths, its as though the kids are at the park all day. They provide truly healthy snacks for the pre-toddlers, and participate in a healthy prepared meals program that is delivered daily. We have not tried this option and the name escapes me, but when you tour the center ask. Currently my only complaint is the daily paper reports that are keep in your child's binder. The quality of the the content is often lacking, but soon the school is transitioning to the 21st century. They are rolling out a web based version using a service called LifeCubby. I suppose it is intended to replace the reports and capture extra stuff such as schedules, pictures, and school wide events. read more

My 8-month-old son was at the Young School at Kendall Ridge for four months. Sadly we had to move out of the area, so we had to leave the school. I wanted to take a moment to sing my praises of this wonderful place. First, the atmosphere is great. The halls are covered in student work, beautiful music is always playing, and brightly colored objects are hanging from the ceiling. I walked in and knew it was the place that my son would go! Unfortunately he was not able to stay there, because I think it would have been even more magical to him as he got older. Second, the director and assistant director are incredibly friendly and organized. They send out regular emails with information, are readily available to answer questions, and are in the front office ready to greet parent/students each day. Next, my son was in the infant classroom, and the teachers were awesome. They were really creative with activities and art projects. I really liked the unique approach the school follows for infants. Babies were encouraged to discover and learn in an safe, yet unrestricted environment. The teachers went above and beyond to make sure that the babies were stimulated in new ways as well. They used an app to update me on my baby's progress throughout the day, and I never had to worry about what was going on. My son was so happy to see his teacher each morning, and every day when I came to pick him up, I saw how well he had been cared for. Another reason I wish we could have stayed, my son would have stayed with his two teachers until he was 2 years old, which I think is incredibly rare and special for a daycare center environment. Anyway, I wanted to write this review to make sure people in the area had the opportunity to consider this place when selecting a daycare for their children. Thanks Young School! read more

The Young School Kendall Ridge has been amazing for our family. We have 3 kids ages 7, 4, and 21 months. We started here when our oldest child had just turned 3 and needed a preschool setting instead of the in-home daycare where he was previously. What caught my attention was the fact that they emphasize learning through play. We had visited several other preschools, but I felt that their programs were either too rigid or too disorganized. My son had Mrs. Doreda and she is phenomenal!! We love the field trips and enrichment activities, and we were even able to do piano and swim lessons through the school!!! The Young school was great for our son, and at the time, it was RIGHT near our house! A few years later, we had moved to ellicott city, so we decided to put our 2 youngest kids in a childcare center/prek that was closer to our house. It was a little less expensive than the Young School, close to our house, and lunch was included....but our experience there was TERRIBLE! So i called Beth (the Head of School), and begged to come back! She even remembered me and asked how my son was doing, which was really awesome! I immediately enrolled our middle child, however, the 21 month old is on a waiting list because they did not have space in the toddler room until august. I say all this to point out one fact...we have 3 kids in 3 different childcare locations, and our lives are CHAOTIC right now...but it's TOTALLY WORTH IT to know that your kids are safe, loved, and actually learning!!! Both our 4-year-old and 1-year-old attend the Young School on Tamar Dr in Howard County. The teachers are motivated, the activities are engaging, and we feel like our kids are in a really great place. The teachers are very creative in finding new ways to engage the kids like having them "write" in a diary, or planting flowers, or learning about bugs, or creating art with all types of resourceful materials. It feels like they are actually in an educational environment versus just being babysat. Our oldest was in a montessori preschool in Boston before we moved to Maryland and she did very well in that environment so we wanted something similar but there wasn't the right montessori option nearby our new home. Luckily the style that the Young school uses is very similar and the transition for our daughter was fairly seemless. They have done a great job preparing her for kindergarten and even gave all the kids her age a really nice 'graduation' ceremony that made them feel very special. They go on frequent field-trips to farms, nature centers, and art exhibits and encourage the parents to chaperone which is fun for all. They are great on communicating with parents if there is a health, safety, or behavioral concern with frequent updates and their processes are very professional and they are very patient and understanding. We would definitely recommend the Young School to anyone who needs child care. read more

Our son is currently a student at The Young School at Kendall Ridge and has been a student since he was 3m old. We interviewed a number of early education facilities while we were still pregnant. After four school interviews, my husband and I both knew The Young School was for our family. The school philosophy truly resonated with us: teacher engagement and guidance, a curriculum, self-discovery, active exploration, without compromising structure. The location in Kendall Ridge was also very appealing since it is tucked away in a suburb community, away from major roads. One of the infant care teachers our son had was superb....approachable, experienced, patient, creative, passionate, and wonderful at communicating how our son was doing and tactics to try at home. As a new parent, this was extremely valuable and reassuring. It is also worth noting in this review that over time, we did have some concerns regarding one of the teachers. When those concerns were brought to the administration's attention, they handled it with seriousness, professionalism, and sensitivity. We have been nothing less than satisfied with the facility (although an upgrade on the mulch playground would be a plus), the administration, and the educators. They have a genuine interest in the children's education, enrichment, and care. For these reasons, our current baby-to-be will be joining his brother at this school. read more

I have 4 children in TYS; all of which began between 8 weeks and 4 months of age. The teachers and staff have become like family and have helped rear well-rounded, socially adept, independent children. TYS provides experienced teachers who are engaging, creative, and truly care about their role in children's lives. The school utilizes a cottage system which allows children to transition to different developmentally appropriate classrooms to further enhance development and minimize boredom. For the infants and todfants, these classrooms include separate crib rooms used for sleeping. Additionally, the circular building infrastructure allows for significant oversight. Classrooms are mostly windows and can be seen from outside and inside the building. The director's office sits in the center of the building and can see the classrooms and front door at all times. TYS also offers field trips, in-school special events/activities (for the kids and some for the whole family), language training (Spanish and Sign), as well as contracted services for extra-curricular activities offered during the day at school for gymnastics, piano, sports, yoga, dance, computers, science and swim lessons. Over the past 4 years, I have never once questioned my selection of TYS as my childcare provider and highly recommend them if you are not in a position to stay home with your child(ren). read more

I currently have 2 kids enrolled at this Young School location. Their infant cottage program has been excellent. Up to 3 infants are assigned a specific teacher that will be their primary caregiver over the course of two year program. I feel this really helps my kids develop a strong bond with their teachers and in turn this avoids having to re-acclimate each kid to a new teacher whenever they move to a new room throughout the 2-year infant/toddler. This was especially important as some kids may be more stranger shy. The Young School has a really strong program that gives children a variety of experiences that may be difficult for fulltime working parents. I know there are some things that I probably would not be able to do with them given my hectic schedule so it is a big relief to know that my kids are getting the opportunity to try and do different things. They do have some risk adverse policies that can make it a little difficult for parents such as not being able to re-heat meals or mix formula. There are good reasons though behind these policies that do minimize risk in the event that instructions may not get followed so it is understandable why they do have them. Overall, this is a very good daycare and I'm very happy with the level of care and attention my kids receive. read more

My son attends The Young School, and gets excited when he sees his teachers! As a mother it is wonderful to see my child light up and squeal with joy when I hand him over to Ms. Bianca or Ms. Erin (infant teachers). While he's there I know that he's being well cared for. My husband and I appreciate the openness with which they operate. We were told from the beginning that they encourage parents to stop by at any time during the day (and of course I did just that). The administrators, themselves, frequent the infant classrooms as caregivers. I often see Ms. Stephanie and Ms. Beth "in the trenches" changing diapers, feeding babies, playing on the floor, etc. You don't see that in many centers, and it tells me that the people overseeing the day to day operations also have an appreciation for what it means to actually take care of children. I echo the sentiments of the other reviewers in that I appreciate the two year rotation of teachers. Children need consistency in order to trust, and being with the same teachers for that extended period of time builds that trust. All in all, I must say that the time we have been at TYS has been wonderful and we look forward to many more years there! read more

My son has been attending The Young School since last Aug when he turned 3. He loves going there and is excited to tell me about his day when I pick him up from school! He was there part-time, Tues and Thurs, but he was still able to go to the monthly field trips and parties held on Wednesdays and Fridays without any additional costs. He really improved in his social and communication skills over the past year by interacting with other 3-year-olds as well as 4-year-olds. This way the younger can learn from the older children. As a first-time mom, I was worried that my son wasn't completely potty trained when he started school, but the teachers worked with me and my son so that he completed potty training smoothly and confidently. In addition, my son learned how to write his letters, to discern between left and right, and draw his own portrait this past year. Learning about light and reflection as well as recycling were big themes this year. Spanish class was on Thursdays so my son picked up Spanish as well this year! I like the quarterly progress reports given and an album we receive at the end of the year with what they learned and created. read more

I currently have two children at The Young School and I had one who has since graduated - he is now in grade school. One of the best things that The Young School does is to keep the same set of teachers with your infant for two years. This is so important during the early years of their lives when attachment is key. For children that are older they have the same "center" teachers as well that work as their primary teacher. For instance, our oldest had a primary teacher who was in charge of the "science" center but would sometimes go over to the art, language, and other areas as he felt comfortable. I don't know how the teachers do it but they seem to know all the kids and parents names and always make it a warn and inviting place to drop my children off every morning. One of the best things that this school did was for my oldest child who would sometimes get overwhelmed in the classroom. They created a "quiet corner" out of a giant box where he could go and calm down. Other students even started to use it as well. It is always the school's priority to put the children first and to find solutions that work for an individual. read more

Both of our daughters currently attend The Young School at Kendall Ridge. Our oldest daughter started in the 2's room, and our youngest started in the infant room. We have had a wonderful experience at The Young School (TYS) and would highly recommend it to anyone considering it for childcare/preschool. The teachers at TYS are amazing. All are well-educated, professional and very engaged with the kids. The children are encouraged to learn through playing with a structured schedule that also focuses on promoting independence. We love the way that TYS has structured transitions and consistency. While in infant care, the kids have the same teachers for 2 years, with exposure to the other infant care teachers throughout the day. Transitions to new classrooms are handled very well with a lot of patience and understanding that change is hard for the kids. In the "older"/preschool rooms (2-5 years old), the kids get to interact with other friends who are a variety of ages. Our daughter has greatly benefited from these interactions, and we are confident that she will be ready to start kindergarten in the fall. read more

The young school was the number one daycare center when we started looking for our 3 month old infant. 9 months later we have never regretted our decision. The center has wonderful teachers that stay with the infant for two full years so that a bond can develop between child and teacher. Each day the child is sent home with a daily report on what was done that day. Infants and toddlers have a separate sleeping environment from their play area unlike any of the other daycare centers that we visited. Most importantly I leave my son there each morning knowing that he is in a safe environment learning through all the planned activities and through play time. What stands out to me the most is that if the director or co-director need to call the parent to advise of illness or maybe an "ouchie" that happened, the first thing that is stated is "no worries it's not an emergency, your son is absolutely fine..."
