Leeds is a pretty starved of actual yoga studios but The Yoga Space is its saving grace. From the inside you would never know it was situated on a busy main road, a short bus journey away from the centre of town or Headingley. The building is a beautiful old church acting as the perfect space for saluting the sun.
If you're into Ashtanga yoga, this is the place for you as the majority of classes here are Ashtanga-based - some of them are termed Vinyasa-flow, Mysore style or dynamic Hatha classes. They offer a range of classes. Absolute beginners can take one class a week for 6 weeks whilst anyone else with some experience can drop into improvers or intermediate classes. If you have been doing yoga for a while but not the Ashtanga style, don't be shy about joining a beginners class as the practice is dynamic, strong and assumes you have previous knowledge of the poses and the series. Classes are cheaper if you book in blocks, which can be used over several months and students can take hour or hour and a half classes for £5/6. It is more expensive to take the occasional drop-in class compared to the usual yoga sessions at a gym or community centre in Leeds, but you get the quality you pay for.
The unique thing about this place is that they offer a self-practice session from 6.30-9.30am every weekday with Joey, who will guide you through the series, no matter what stage you are at in your practice. I cannot recommend this guy highly enough as his classes and enthusiasm (especially to get you to that 6.30am practice) is not matched by many other Ashtanga teachers in the area. And don't worry; you can always turn up at 8am! This is predominantly a space for yoga but they also offer break-dancing classes, Tai Chi, Tai massage and extend to postnatal yoga, family yoga and regularly run the kind of one-off workshops that cannot be found elsewhere in Leeds. read more
