Mind you the entire gym was empty. This is the second time a member has tried to fight me at this gym and I am a combat injured Marine, mind you. I will not give them a chance for a third and do not recommend them to anyone not wanting to get into a fight at their local gym. Just a thought maybe get a big guy at the desk instead of leaving a 110 lb young girl as the only employee at the front to act as your bouncer.

It does get pretty busy around 4 PM-7 PM for the after-work rush. I recommend going anytime before or after that window! They also offer after-workout drinks and snacks! I went up to the front desk and asked to use the "Day Pass" I was immediately met with a "you need a member with you" I explained I wanted to check it out and use the "day pass" that was advertised on their website. No apology just a "have you been here before?" I said no and she asked for my license. I explained it was in my car or I had a photo on my phone. she told me what website to go to and i was looking it up and she asked for my license again, i reiterated that it was in my car or i had a photo if that was fine. she just muttered "phone" I was finishing signing up for the pass and she kept asking if i was done yet, i explained i was still finishing up all my info and then she asked again, i was waiting for their internet to load. I handed over my phone once i was done with my license pulled up, she asks me for my last name. I tell her and she types it in. She accuses me of being there before. I tell her i haven't. She then says my sister's name saying i'd had a membership before...my sister has but i haven't ?? She's holding my license with my name on it and accuses me of being my sister. i explain that's my sister and not me. she then says my moms name ?? I AGAIN tell her my name THAT'S SHES HOLDING IN HER HAND. she then just finishes up whatever she's doing and looks at me. i take my phone back and that's it. No apology or explanation on how everything works. The whole time this is happening she's letting this little kid run around behind her desk stealing her toys out of her toy basket. Talking so nicely and polite to him and then turning to me and giving me the worst attitude. Idk what her problem was but after that I don't think i'm going to be going back for a full time membership.

That alone is a frustrating waste of time, but what happened next was far more disappointing. When I attempted to use a day pass for pool access -- an option clearly advertised on their own website -- staff refused to honor it. No explanation, no attempt to find a solution, no offer to sign me up for a membership that would have allowed access. Instead, I was told to "go to a public pool." Let that sink in. A paying customer, attempting to use a service the organization publicly advertises, was turned away and redirected to a public pool -- with zero effort made to retain my business or treat me with basic dignity. The experience felt deeply unwelcoming, and the manner in which I was dismissed did not feel coincidental. As a Black woman, being turned away without options, without alternatives, and without even the courtesy of a membership offer -- while others were not treated the same way -- speaks to a larger culture issue within this location. The YMCA markets itself as a community organization built on inclusion and access for all. This location's staff did not reflect those values on this day. Leadership needs to seriously examine how their staff engages with customers of color, retrain accordingly, and ensure that what is on their website is actually honored at the door. I have documented this experience and am following up through the appropriate channels. This is not the end of this conversation. If I could give it zero stars I would.

I even asked for a standing floor bag (gym was equipped with a hanging one) for my martial arts exercises and they got one! There are plenty of weights and a few weight and cardio machines, along with an open floor room that's available as long as a class isn't running. Staff cleans regularly, prices are reasonable, and it's open 24 hours with a key tag.

My regular readers know i am a stingy old scrooge when it comes to five star ratings. Impress me…read more Zephyr's Fitness has earned its stripes in my opinion. Here is why: Before heading over to Northern Ohio i did A-LOT of research on gyms. Cooked them all down into two possibilities. One near the office up by Cleveland and one near Orville OH. All of the others are weight loss focused. Not weight training. Think squat racks, deadlifts, weights crashing, and soaked shirts. I better stop there before i digress into something not suitable for those with weak hearts and young children. Let's talk about the owner. To know the owner is to know the gym. This is a man with a solid physic, quite demeanor, with a deep well of determination and focus. He is an integral member of the community from what i can tell. The kind of person everyone should have in there life for all sorts of good reasons. He is often present. Either working out himself or getting to know his members. Often both simultaneously from what i have noticed. Be prepared for him to introduce himself at some point. Maybe you can beat him to it and introduce yourself. So good friendly energy at this gym. The gym is carved up into a few different areas. The main gyms is surrounded by a track for laps or to walk off stiff muscles. The middle is halved by an area that is often used to push or drag weights, lunges and other exercises that requires some room to roam. The front section isolation machines and cardio machines. All new and in great shape. Minimal duplicate machines are available if it gets busy but so far it has not been an issue. The second half is free-weights. With three squat racks, hack squat, small leg press, two smith machines, six assorted bench presses. and other equipment. Lots of action in this area. It is open and welcoming without feeling like your on display. The "Jungle" is a walled off area behind a large industrial but windowed garage door. This area is for those on a mission. The chalk can be found here. Along with loud noises, heavy weight, and worn machines. Each has likely seen a lot of blood,sweat and tears offered up on there alters over the years. The section next to it has a warmup area, at least that how i use it. Stretching, some machines, some tired jump-ropes, bands and so on. Next to this area is the cross fit area. This is in effect another whole building to which i will have to defer to someone who knows it better than I. The gym has a good sound system that plays some decent 80's. There are nooks to store your stuff. Lockers are available but i am not sure how that all works. The front desk is staffed M-F. But weekend coverage is iffy at best. BUT and this is a big BUT, is the doors are locked and you cannot get in without a token. You only get a token if your monthly member. So what about us daily folks you ask. We are F@%$!. Yep, say a prayer and hope someone see's you awkwardly pressing your face up against the one-way glass from the outside. Wave and knock and make all kinds of motions. That's what i do. I try and make it totally awkward for everyone inside trying there best not to see or acknowledge me. It really gets fun when a member comes walking around the corner and beeps in. It must be pretty funny for those driving by as well. I try and put on a good show. Waiting for the police to show up to haul me off. So a word of warning... you may not want to gulp down your pre-workout until you know you can get in if your a daily like me. So call and make sure. Sometime the phone lines go straight to VM on Saturday. Sunday nobody is there to let you in. Once your in you can pay the 10 bucks. But getting through those doors is a craps shoot on the weekend at least. Given the limited options for those committed to training, Zephyr's is a keeper. Worthy of my 30 minute commute each way to partake in its offerings.
