My experience with LA Fitness ultimately led me to cancel my membership despite being satisfied…read morewith the actual personal training. I was paying more than $200 per month when my personal training package and other membership amenities were included. Unfortunately, I experienced repeated issues with the overall gym environment, including interactions with staff members that I felt were disrespectful and included offensive remarks as I passed by. I brought my concerns to management more than once, but eventually reached the point where I no longer felt comfortable continuing to pay that amount of money in an environment where I could not simply focus on my workout in peace. I ultimately spoke with management and a regional manager about ending my agreement. They did work with me somewhat on the cancellation cost and reduced the amount by approximately $200, but I still paid more than $300 to get out of the contract. I want to be fair and say that the personal training itself was very good. My reason for leaving was not the quality of the training. It was the overall environment and my feeling that, for what I was paying, I should have been able to expect a consistently professional and respectful experience. For me, the biggest lesson from this experience is that I will no longer enter into long-term gym contracts. I now prefer month-to-month memberships so that if the environment or service does not meet my expectations, I have the ability to leave without paying hundreds of dollars to get out of an agreement. When someone is investing this much money in their health and fitness, they should be able to come into the gym, work out, and leave without unnecessary problems. That was ultimately what I was looking for, and unfortunately I did not feel I was receiving it here.

Not only that, but the equipment, the cleanliness, and the overall merry attitude of the staff had me affected once or twice. When I had first started working out, I'd asked for help with my form from a mean looking jacked staff member, who in turn, with great class and charima, helped get my row right. Matthew is the man. Not only that, but to this day, every interaction I've had with with the front desk members has had left me with either a lesson, or a positive impact on my being. If you ever see a joyous brunette with a tenacious vernacular and mental acumen, don't let the head turning scare you away. She's a doll.

This facility is not friendly to Alumni families. Faculty/Staff/Students or community members are all offered the option of a family membership but not Alumni. Our teenager can not even come and walk on the track or play basketball for less than a $10/day guest pass. I don't expect child care, or other offerings for kids, but it would be nice to have a family pass so we can all get some exercise together. If you have kids of any age, stick with the YMCA.
