It doesn't suffer from the over-expensive second hand fever that is sweeping our beloved stores (ahem Brunswick Street), and every time I pick up something and have a look at the price I don't have to immediately put it down and walk away with my head hung. There are always some great retro vases or platters in the window that hark back to a time where lurid orange and brown were chic and big belt buckles were king. Even if I don't end up buying anything, a short trip here is an instant pick me up. The atmosphere is fun, the sales assistants are friendly and the products are very kitsch.

From great quality cardigans that won't lose their shape, to quirky dresses to fashion-forward tops and bottoms with the cutest prints. This is one store that doesn't shy away from prints. In fact, Friends of Couture seems to thrive on prints. If you're serious about dots, stripes, hearts, bows, checks, horses, owls, bears, moose, deer and cats, you'll love the stuff here. If you hate these prints - go elsewhere! Serious, monochromatic-addicts will hate it here. I love the quirky patterns, vintage inspired buys and spin-offs on classic prints that this shop does so well. Plus, it carries a good selection of handbags and accessories to complete your outfit with. Always make sure to check the back racks for sale products. Very often you'll find that perfect dress, scarf or cardi just waiting to be brought home by you.

A lot of people come here to socialise and to have a decent conversation. There is a lot of bric-a-brac here and there are plenty of good home decor items up for grabs. Photo frames are only a $1 or so. The clothing here isn't amazing but I did find a couple of vintage items. These were marked up slightly higher than the other clothes but they were great quality so I didn't feel cheated. There are also a lot of kids toys and accessories like handbags and shoes here. I always leave here with something, and at once stage there were so many great leather jackets that fit me that I kept returning to buy them all, just because they fit, and were quite cheap. You could easily pick up a good leather jacket for $30 at one stage; one that would easily set you backs $200 in the city. Of late however, the prices have lifted a little, reflecting the trend for recycled and second hand clothing. A huge range of shoes lines the back wall, and my little lady often winds up trying on heaps of good ladies clothes and leaves with a swag of dresses for a steal.

What with two kids, a mortgage and car loan my husband and I weren't exactly in the position to go out and grab a brand new fisher and paykel. So we traipsed around Glenroy, the discount and op shops, all of whom either didn't stock fridges, or stocked second hand bangers for about the same price as a brand new fisher and paykel. Cash Traders was the last place and I wasn't even going to bother, but I'm glad I did. We scored a double door fridge with heaps of room and flashy compartments. Sure, it was second hand but it wasn't in bad nick and it was bigger and better than the one we had. And we got it for a steal at only $250! With a twelve month warranty!! How good is that! So don't write them off if you're in need of a bargain, they might just have what you're looking for at the price you need.

Located a couple of K's behind the big mall this store offers a surprisingly awesome level of selection. With seven donation bins waiting patiently out the front and a whole basement full of stock this gives you some idea of their level of turnover. There are several racks devoted wholly to designer clothing and retro/costume racks with actual vintage pieces. Don't get too excited though, the staff know their stuff and price the stock accordingly. It's still cheaper than looking for vintage pieces around Collingwood/Fitzroy but don't expect back of the church shop prices. There is a huge selection of kids clothing, bric a brac, sports equipment and electrical goods. There is also A LOT of vinyl, I found Carly Simon and ELO without even trying. So if you're up for the drive (public transport is almost impossible) Doncaster Salvos is worth a visit.

There's an old Vodaphone sign, complete with Michael Richards (that guy who played Kramer) on it that's been tweaked a bit to beckon you inside. It's the first indication that Hunter & Co might be a bit quirky. Walk on in and you will be greeted with mid century beauties, stacked floor to ceiling. There's armchairs, sideboards, sets of draws and reupholstered sofas and dining chairs. Walk on through to the back section and you'll find some wardrobes (which are very hard to find for this era) and a selection of nic nacs including carved teak bowls. The fun doesn't stop there though, head upstairs for another floor of high quality original and rejuvenated pieces. The guy who owns this store, Gareth, is a quiet chap eager to help you find the perfect piece for your home. His design knowledge is good and he's able to explain the history of pieces if you're interested. Be prepared though. Hunter & Co is not cheap. This isn't dime-a-dozen furniture and compared with other second hand stores it's on the pricier side, reflecting a collection that is a little less commonly found and of a high quality. We were the proud buyers of two Hans Hayson furniture pieces - a wardrobe and sideboard set with draws - and Gareth let us pay them off over a month and then delivered them free of charge when we were settled in to our new home. They're beautiful and although more than we had originally budgeted for bedroom storage, we love looking at them every day. Functional and pleasing on the eye - surely what all furniture should be.

Unlike those that become chains and spread their good everywhere, the true locals can almost appear like some sort of time capsule. One thing I've started doing is going through the music and book collections more and more. I think maybe this gives a very different insight into the place. The Epilepsy Op Shop, located on South Parade near Blackburn Station, is one such op shop. The ladies behind the counter are courteous and friendly, and while you may have to speak up they can tell you all about the bits and pieces in here. The clothes are more fashion suited for women, with their flowing skirts and floral prints. My girlfriend managed to come across quite a few winners here, though the clothes I get for myself have more of a novelty value.. There's a lot of craft pieces - buttons, zippers and more - towards the back for those looking to adapt their own pieces from the clothes they buy, and the small range of furniture taking up the remaining space is hit and miss.
