Indeed Montrealers have been weaned off the idea of customer satisfaction and into the dogma of corporate skepticism (look how long they kept Starbucks at bay), but Kids and Co. has clearly benefited from corporate-HQ delegated programing and management of employee turnover. The teachers are extremely energetic and thoughtful of toddler needs and education. The ratio of kid/teacher is low! I feel this keeps employees fresh and motivated. Their general service is accommodating, receiving the kids at hours that suit our family's schedule (this is not a general philosophy of subsidized daycares that we have tried out). Complimentary service a few evenings and weekends per year is commendable. Food is fresh and regulated by nationally (presumably that assures quality/nutritional control). Educational programing is obviously more than what is provided by subsidized daycare i.e. Mini-Masters Art program, Alphabet lessons, French lessons, yoga sessions. In the front rooms, open to all, there is a big communal table and lots of smaller cafe tables, a free mini library, and other techy cool projects by members - like the Manivelle touch screen that connects you to the digital archives of Montreal's libraries! An event was created there yesterday as a fund to help the organization called Les fruits défendus Montréal, it is an organization where volunteers pick local fruits and vegetables from people's backyard and community garden to avoid it from going to waste. The food are then, split into three parts, the first third is separated by the volunteers to take home, the 1/3 part is given to the owner and the last 1/3 is given to the organization to make fresh and nutritious food. I have the chance to drop by this little place with a communal kitchen for a lesson on Kombucha drink. The lady teaching us was knowledgeable and funny to boot. At the end of the event, we have a chance to take home a pot of kombucha's mother mushroom, the liquid to contain the mother, a tissue sheet and an elastic band to close the pot properly. Donations are asked between 10 and 25$. Most of the attendees gave 20$ and up! Overall, the place is pretty neat to hang out in. They sell homemade frozen meal for 6 dollars, they have awesome canned food and... Although, it is not the season to garden, they sell seeds for plants and vegetables.
