There are several campground loops in Yellow River State Forest. After seeing everything the state forest offers on television and online which is mostly the great scenery, we decided to check out this area.
Getting here at night was a bit of a challenge. The road is very dark and the signs to the campgrounds are a bit hard to see. I'd recommend finding where you need to go during sunlight if you can. There also didn't seem to be many stores within the area or for miles and miles, so we had to pickup firewood at least ten miles away at a gas station. Come prepared.
The next day when we woke with sunlight, it was an entirely different experience considering we could see. The campground was very scenic with the deep forest that surrounds it. We were finally able to get some reception (not easy) and find the closest Walmart which was about 30 mins away in Prairie du Chien, WI.
As far as Big Paint Campground goes, it's not the biggest campground. Pretty small actually and most of the sites are pretty open, not so secluded. No showers either, but there was toilets. We had stayed in site 035 which was probably the most cornered site in the loop. There's another across the way, but only available to purchase as a walk in site. We made the best of it and actually enjoyed our experience here quite much, but I think next time we'll check out another camp in this forest.
All in all, regardless of the no stores for miles and the little to no reception, isolation is what we were looking for here in the big forest. We left so much unexplored here, I feel like a return trip is a must for the future. read more
