But I really enjoy every class. I like hitting things :-) There's no showers or anything - just a basic room to get changed, and some loos. Better to come dressed for the class, and go home for a shower. It's a great place if you want to get fit, or learn to defend yourself.

I did one class of the ultimate fitness and my abs were sore for a week! Its a very male dominated gym and can be quite intimidating when you first go in, especially as a somewhat unfit female who believes a quartetly run counts as regular excersie, but you'll just have to get over that quickly. You'll feel amazing, strong, sore, tired, and energetic all at once for days afterward. Trainers are good. They'll push you hard but they're not mean about it, just to the point. I'm hooked and plan to make this my regular gym, give it a go if you're looking for something different.

I generally consider myself quite open to that sort of thing - it's the inner hippie in me - but some of the classes offered here test even my limits of credulity. However, don't let the more, shall we say, far out offerings put you off the centre as a whole, as it does have an exceptionally peaceful atmosphere and the yoga and meditation workshops I've attended have all been pretty sound - the quality just depends on the individual teacher who's running them. If you do want to "awaken the happy you" (who wouldn't?), "experience the light of Christ as healing energy", or even just find a decent yoga class, then check their website to see what courses are coming up.

The body therapist I am seeing for an injury, suggested going along and trying the Hatha Yoga sessions which would help my posture and movement. I signed up for the classes with Aishvarya Lila on a Thursday evening and it has been so beneficial. The centre offers so much in the way of alternative/complimentary therapies, as well as other activities such as pottery classes. There is a nice little organic garden for relaxing in and also a library open to the public. If you are open minded and willing to try alternative/complimentary therapies, this is a great place to come and meet a varied and interesting group of people. Highly recommended, loose comfortable clothing is advised if participating in any of the classes such as Yoga or Tai Chi.

George himself is getting on a bit (and is besides pretty busy jetting around the world, being a judo elder statesman) but his team of similarly proven masters do a great job of running the show in George's own distinctive style. The classes themselves are great. A situation that could quite easily degenerate into crowd control - kids from three up, burning off their Saturday morning crazies - is fun and astonishingly coherent. For the youngest class, this is achieved by an unremitting 45-minute barrage of games, exercises and banter that somehow keeps everything moving in the same direction. Astonishingly, among the mayhem, the kids learn an awful lot and seem to make great progress from one week to the next. Really, the only downside is that I now can't wear a dressing gown around the flat without being challenged to a fight.

I'm so happy I've finally found a great yoga studio in Edinburgh. After a few failed attempts…read moreelsewhere, where either the teaching was sub-standard or the atmosphere was a bit serious, I stumbled upon Canning Street Yoga when walking past one day and decided to give it a try. As soon as you enter, you're greeted with a big smile from owner, Lee Derrick, who opened the studio just six months ago. He's a super friendly guy who wants to make yoga fun and accessible to everyone at an affordable price. No intimidating, hardcore yogis here, just people like you and me who want to do some yoga in a relaxed environment. Lee's goal is to create a community feel to the place so that people feel they can hang out for a while, mix and socialize. So many yoga classes I've been to feel quite austere with no talking and people arriving immediately before the class and leaving immediately after. This place is more social than that and stems from Lee's chatty good humour but also from the friendly welcome given by all the other instructors. The classes on offer cover most requirements with hot yoga, vinyasa flow and beginners classes for example. But there's also a few classes that offer something a bit different and help generate that community vibe. For example, there's yoga and wine on Fridays (the wine comes after the class, not during!) and workshops on certain weekends that explore different aspects of yoga such as Salute to the Sun coming up this Saturday that explores the sun salutation. There's also a sports performance angle where the instructors can work with you to improve your strength and flexibility for your chosen sport. For example, there's a Yoga for Golf program coming up to help lengthen that backswing and open those hips! In addition to yoga, you can also get a range of therapies, treatments and massages. I can recommend the sports massage from Maurice of MH Therapies as he seems to be able to find and remove knots (sorry, "contractions") that have been problems for years, quite transforming my posture and how I feel. So I recommend this place, whether you're wanting to try yoga for the first time, just looking for some good classes or you want to feel part of a more friendly yoga community.
