I really, really want to give four stars. Definitely a four star potential here. However, there were some pretty serious missteps that are keeping me at a three for the Argyler.
The Pros:
The service is incredible. My best friend and I arrived late on Sunday night after a very delayed ferry crossing from Portland, Maine. We were met and welcomed, given our keys, everything was great.
The room was exquisite. We stayed in the Captain's Quarters - which sleeps 2-3 easily. Four poster bed with a luxurious mattress. Charming decor. Excellent shower with great water pressure. Ample pillows and blankets and a stunning view of Lobster Bay.
The food. Our breakfast was lovely - omelettes, gluten free English muffins, bacon, orange juice, local berries, hashbrowns. Really good coffee. All good right? Should have been.
The Cons:
No food outside of breakfast on most days (dining room is open for dinner Thursday - Sunday). This is not explicitly listed ANYwhere on the website, nor were we told at registration, even though we were booked in for two nights. Sunday night we had already eaten, so it came as kind of a shock after breakfast when we were told no more food would be available until Tuesday morning.
Nothing is accessible without a car. The nearest town is several miles away. There is no public transit or local cab. Also all fine, but when you cater to folks from all over, you may want to warn them that they are stuck there without a car.
We walked the nearby trail, explored the grounds, read on the porch...and that got us to about 3pm.
Summary:
Once the staff (John and Alanna) became aware of just how stuck we were, they did take steps to help us out. John gave us a ride to dinner at a local restaurant; Alanna connected us with some other folks to visit a nearby local festival. They really helped us out - which was hugely appreciated, and the hotel really is truly lovely. I reread the website, trying to see how I could have made such a mistake, but the logistical situation is absolutely unclear.
I think that they should either add a "things to know" tab to the website naming that a car is essential for a successful visit, or they should disable online booking. "Sorry, no food" is really an unpleasant surprise.
That said - go here when they are serving food! It really is lovely and peaceful - the perfect retreat! read more
