Wood block where sushi pieces get blowtorched.
Louis A.

This is a very nice sushi place in Kensington, serving fresh nigiri and sashimi prepped and served by Japanese people, along with some westerners as well. The creations aren't the norm, but their omakase is perfect, with choices of number of pieces, 10 being the large one and the one I chose. There's a big block of a tree trunk between the two workstations that's used to char the surface of the fish with a blowtorch, which gives a nice Smokey flavor.

The last time I came here was two years ago and have to say it has stayed the same in terms of quality and service. Quality is excellent and the Yashin Omakase allows you to sample the range of sushi bites at best cost. £60 for 15 pieces. Chefs know their seafood and creative combinations. Service is slightly worse than last time. This time being seated downstairs meant we didn't get to experience the sushi bar. They have too many staff for various tasks that do not get done efficiently. One person to bring plates down and then it sat for over 5 minutes waiting for the only waiter to serve it. No one checked our table throughout the meal so we sat with empty drink glasses. This is unacceptable for a high end sushi restaurant and so will have to look elsewhere for our next dining experience.

It's great to see Britain gradually lose its status as the poor food appreciators of the world and one of the proofs is the proliferation of sushi eaters. Even 10 years ago, the thought of eating raw fish would be anathema to most Brits but now, you can buy it in supermarkets However, the quality is still way behind places like California, where simple mom and pop places still turn out amazing and affordable sushi Yashin is a higher end restaurant and I got the chance to try it out for lunch yesterday. The staff are super nice and shout out a Japanese greeting as you enter, Ippudo style. At least, I assume it's a greeting! I had made a booking via their website and the only seating oddity is that they like to cram everyone to one end of the kitchen counter even though there was lots of space available. I didn't mind but a couple who came in after me asked to sit at the empty end As I had turned up for sushi, I opted for the omakase 8 for £30 - 8 pieces of nigiri sushi with the choice of fish dictated by the chefs as well as 6 pieces of maki roll of the day, served with miso soup in a teacup and salad I'm always up for miso soup but I found the salad a little bland, mainly because the dressing was uni-dimensional rather than having a few balanced flavours Now onto the sushi. Firstly an apology for the lack of photos but I have to confess I forgot in my excitement to eat it! The pieces aren't huge and those with a bigger appetite than I may still feel a little peckish on leaving. However, the quality of fish is first rate. They were conventional fish though and I was hoping for something a little more off the grid or the odd bit of luxury like toro (fatty tuna belly) or scallop The restaurant's USP is 'without soya sauce' and they season the sushi and every piece had a matching condiment on top. I presume that's because they want you to really taste the fish and this is where I think some of their condiments were too powerful - there was especially a wasabi based one that made it impossible to taste that piece properly. I ended up nibbling each of the nigiri on is own to get the flavour of the fish before eating it with the condiment I did enjoy the sushi but having eaten at places like Chef's Table at Brooklyn Fare, my advice is less is more when it comes to adding flavours sushi. In fact, I loved the crab salad maki roll because I could taste and enjoy the crab flavour At these prices, a visit here is more of a treat than an everyday meal but my favourite nigiri in London still remains otoro at Dozo in Soho and hotate (scallop) at Cocoro

Torched rolls! My favourite.

If you are looking for a place to eat really fresh sushi without soy sauce, this is it. Really fresh fish and great selection. I came in for lunch and watched the chefs do what they do best. This place is pricey but you can even find great affordable options whether it be a £12.50 sushi lunch special or £20 omakase for dinner. Highly recommend going here and who knows maybe I'll see you there.

First amuse bouche

I love their eleven by one omakase - 11+ pieces of sushi served at the bar one at a time - so utterly fresh. It was preceded by two surprising and delicious amuses bouche, and no words will do any of them justice, but maybe photos will help:

Sake Martini, Sake Flight and Tuna with truffle oil! Amazing!!

I went to this place on recommendation. I found the portions very small for the money. Though creative and tasty. This restaurant has flights of sake which was quite cool to taste the differences and service is awesome. Grab a seat at the chefs table to see all the action!

Otoro and fatty salmon sashimi

I wanna start by saying that I'm a bit snobby when it comes to sushi. and that I thought sushi in London is hopeless and subpar. cos nobody knows what good quality seafood means or even tastes like... until I found Yashin. I'm addicted to Yashin. It's like a drug. I can't stop thinking about it, and when I have it, I keep wanting more. Seriously, my order increases every time I go. Makes me feel like an insatiable beast. So what's so special about Yashin? First off they've got really good quality fish. Probably the best I've had in London (better than Nobu IMO). It's rare that you find good quality uni and hotate here, but Yashin's got it!! In terms of otoro, chutoro and fatty salmon, they are OK. They're not bad but I wouldn't say they're outstanding. I normally prefer my sashimi cut a bit thicker, but I guess otoro/chutoro/fatty salmon are hard to source so it's more precious for them. Now let's talk about their special sauce and toppings. They're AWESOME. They even make boring sea bass amazing, and change my view on my least favorite mackerel. Their tuna carpaccio with truffle sauce and yuzu sauce is a little taste of heaven. It's a great starter while you're waiting for your nigiris (they could take a while) If you're into sake they have a very well selected list of junmai, jinjo and daijinjo. writing this review makes me want more Yashin!

Sukiyaki Roll
Steph A.

I dined here on Saturday night and had a really enjoyable experience. My husband an I shared the 'sashimi without soy sauce' which came as 12 pieces of 6 fish varieties. Each fish was seasoned differently and the fish was excellent quality- the mackerel in particular was exceptionally fresh. For £25 this was a pretty good deal! We also got an order of the 'summer truffle toro with salted kombu'. The truffle and toro was delicious- there were whole pieces of truffle which was a real treat for the palate! There were 5 pieces of toro which was a very reasonable portion for such a high quality dish. We ordered the Sukiyaki with red ginger roll as it said it came with a raw egg and we were intrigued.. The roll was really crispy and could be dipped into the raw egg served separately. We thoroughly enjoyed it- the egg gave it a creamy flavour and the variety of textures worked really well. The decor of the restaurant has been really well thought out and the servers were very attentive. We will be back for sure!

This place was a pleasant surprise as not your usual sushi place. The chefs pay great attention and detail to what they serve. The menu is eclectic and yet still traditional. The only draw back to the place as with most places in London it can attract the pretentious douchey crowd who are loud obnoxious euro-trash. However the food and staff make it a pleasurable experience¡

Recently opened Yashin Sushi near High Street Kensington is easy to miss if you don't know that it's there. Hidden away on a side street without any sign outside all you can go by is the interior and the large neon sign on the wall behind the chefs. The sign incidentally says "Without soy sauce" - the only soy sauce is the one that the chef has added to the sushi by brushing them with it to make sure it's the right amount. Let me say right now, the place is expensive. Since they recently opened when I went they were handing out vouchers for £10 off per person for dinner. Still, the Omakase 8 (8 pieces of sushi with 6 rolls) is £20 with the discount. The quality of the fish however is fantastic... I have to say this is the best sushi that I have had in London so far. Also, as you can expect from a place like this the service is impeccable. The seats are all situated around the counter behind which the chefs prepare the food. It's quite a sight sitting there watching the chef use a blow torch to quickly sear the scallop sushi you are just about to have. As an appetiser a plate with three different things were brought out of which I had to choose one. Why I couldn't have all 3 (especially since the place was deserted) I don't know. For a starter I tried the fresh tofu which comes some jelly that is supposed to be dissolved in the tofu. The tofu was silky smooth and quite nice with some very subtle flavours. On to the sushi. I went for the Omakase 8 and wasn't disappointed. There wasn't a single one that I didn't like and some were absolutely great. Melt-in-your-mouth fish quality and eat-slowly-to-savour-it flavours. After the sushi on to dessert. They had 4 different ice creams: green tea, white sesame, shiso sorbet and yuzu sorbet. I tried both shiso and yuzu sorbets and they were a fantastic ending to a great dinner. Very refreshing and light. I would come here all the time if it weren't for the price which is why I took one star off.

Sashimi scallop and caviar
Ann C.

Everything served here is fresh and unique, but some pieces are a little over-powering, like one yelper suggested. Service is excellent as well. I loved the sashimi scallop (with caviar). Not a caviar fan, so my friend had my share of it. All tasted great, but that dish was most memorable of the meal. Expensive all around, but worth trying.

Aburi Salmon Ikura Don
光芳

Very friendly, confident and luxurious sushi restaurant. I guess all self-confessed sushi lovers in London should visit this restaurant! The dishes are pleasant in the eyes and taste gorgeous. I took "Aburi Salmon Ikura Don" which contains 'Ikura' seasoned with truffle and fatty 'toro" salmon served with miso soup in a lovely tea cup (!) and salad with delicious onion dressing. The dish is beautifully arranged so that I even hesitated to touch it with chop sticks. You can sit at the counter if you like to see the skillful cutting movements of sushi chef or you can choose to sit at the tables in downstairs as well. Now I have to save my money to have dinner here...!!!

The place is owned by a Japanese family of six, all working together. This is place is not known for their sushi ( forget it, it's not the main food of Japanese food) but for their katsu ( fried food ) we ordered different dishes to share : edamame, kushikatsu, fried oysters, fishcake, pork, some greens... and of course sake ! Everything was very tasty, it reminded me Japan so much ! I totally recommend this place for enjoying nice and real Japanese food! Also it's not too pricy for London

It was a good thing we did, because the place filled up soon after we were seated. This please specializes in battered fried awesome on a stick. So do order some of these fun dishes. I also tried a bit of their sushi, and it was tasty and unfussy. But I think the highlight of the meal was trying new flavours, such as deep fried shrimp wrapped in perilla leaf. They also have a very nice sake and shochu selection. Try the red bean ice cream. Very subtle and a lovely texture with mashed beans included. Our hostess/waitress was a one woman wonder, and she made sure we loved everything. Don't be afriad to ask if you don't know what a sauce or side dish is. I learned I really like the yellow pickled radish called takuan that came with my partner's meal. and it made the hostess super happy too boot, as apparently, according to her, many younger Japanese don't like the flavour. Ah well, I know I did.

There seems to be a lot of mixed reviews of this place on Yelp, but I thought it was quite good…read more The sushi was slightly on the pricey side (~70 GBP in total), but good quality. Volcano roll - This was my favorite, as there was a delicious mayo sauce with eel inside. A unique and tasty creation. Spicy crunchy salmon roll - This one was just okay. The sauce on top was a bit spicy but it otherwise didn't have too much flavor to note. 12 piece sashimi set - I could taste that the sashimi was fresh and I liked that there were scallops there too. The environment has a nice intimate vibe with some unique Japanese style seats. The service was fine, although the staff could have been a bit friendlier. The service speed was quick though. Overall, I think Dozo is a very good option for high quality sushi / Japanese food in South Kensington.

Best sushi in London and not typical London sushi prices…read more We've been here half a dozen times by now, always for lunch (Tip: if you're hitting up the musuems nearby, try this spot, away from the crowds.) They don't take lunch reservations and you don't need them. We always arrive right around 12pm when it opens and get a table. Speaking of tables, it's worth noting that they have embedded floor seating so the tables are low to the ground, but you still sit in a chair-like position. So you're sitting on the floor, on a cushion, and there's no back to rest against. I do not wear a dress when I come here, and it can be difficult to clamber into the "seat". They also have normal tables, too so be sure to ask for that if you want it. We always get the nigiri, which is very reasonably priced, super fresh and delicious, but they also have ramen, bento boxes, maki rolls, hot pot, donburi and noodle dishes.
