In the Visitor's Center, you can see the Lionel Layout, which was moved from Michigan to Riverhead back in 2011 and it is truly something to behold. It is very interactive and there are plenty of buttons for kids (or adults!) to push to make things move or light up. The highlight is the model circus that was handcrafted by a local man. They might not make small talk about something else, but if you have train related questions, they are excellent resources. What a beautiful setting for an event, being out in the fields as the sun was setting made the whole night feel extra special. There were so many local vendors and businesses, with plenty of wine, spirits, and other drink options, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. The entertainment really added to the atmosphere too. Between the DJ, dancers in their beautiful costumes, and the live drums, there was such a fun energy throughout the evening. The food was definitely a highlight. There were so many things to sample, but my personal favorites were the oysters, Ecuadorian ceviche, and the peach bruschetta. I also loved the little tacos and the pie! It was such a great way to wrap up the summer. Hallockville is absolutely beautiful, and events like this are such a fun way to experience the farm while supporting local businesses and vendors. I grew up in Bethpage and so Grumman was all around me, and lived in Redondo Beach, CA for 26 years, home of Northrop Grumman, so anything related is very sentimental to me...so it was great seeing several bricks in the walkway, too many to count stating proud employee, etc, and so many with several decades on the job. I've visited here numerous times for a run in Calverton and it's always a cool feeling to park here and view the fighter jets - F14 Tomcat and A6 Intruder. It's well manicured with parking, plaques detailing the aircraft and histories, some picnic benches, and memorial bricks lining the inside of the park area highlighting those who worked on their many projects in aerospace and aviation. There are running and biking trails from this park out on and around the former 10,000 foot flight test runway. Worth a visit for aviation history buffs if you are out on LI near the area.

You can tell a lot of thought and care went into creating this museum. The museum focuses on the creation and evolution of the Navy SEALs and was created in memory of Lt. Michael P. Murphy and the ultimate sacrifice he made in service to our country. There are also several films that tell his story, which added a very personal and emotional element to the experience. The museum starts with an informative look at the history and evolution of the SEALs before moving into more solemn exhibits centered around Lt. Murphy's story and a memorial area honoring members who lost their lives in service. From there, the exhibits showcase a variety of equipment, including firearms, parachutes, watercraft, and other specialized gear. There is also an Oculus experience that simulates a parachute jump, along with a 4D submarine ride that reminded us of a smaller-scale Soarin' style experience at Disney. Outside, you'll find several specialized Navy vehicles, a helicopter, and a submarine on display. The entire museum is thoughtfully and efficiently designed. We left feeling like we had learned something, experienced moments of pride and sadness, and even shared a few laughs in the entertainment section. This was much more than just a museum visit. It was an experience that took us through history, sacrifice, courage, and service. 100% recommend checking it out if you're in the area.

This festival is geared toward kids and family fun! Pictures with Santa, roasting marshmallows, and ice skating. The Village Center was the site for the "Festival of Trees". Local business themed Christmas trees all decorated for the season. Vendors of all kinds set up their wares here as well as in various locations throughout the village. The highlight of the event are the performers who are dressed up in 19th century Victorian era costumes. Some are stationed at various points, giving out directions. Others are meandering around the village spreading Christmas cheer, "Happy Christmas to you both!" Many stop to talk to and take pictures with the children and their families. We heard they parade down Main Street and stop at the lighting of the Christmas tree. Both activities which I missed...no doubt buying something from a vendor! The weather was unusually balmy for December. It did not take away at all from the cheery Christmas feel. I wish I had known about this event when my children were younger, I definitely would have visited with them. Truth be told, Christmas is my favorite holiday! I had a wonderful time... Then, I'd take the family to see A Christmas Carol at the theater. The street actors performed the play both forwards and backwards! Times were simpler then. The town allowed a roaring fire on Main St and provided sticks for the kids to roast marshmallows. This was my little town and we looked forward to this weekend. From the horse drawn carriages coming down Main St into port, it truly was an entertaining experience. Fast forward to 2019. From Newsday to News12 all saying come to Port Jefferson and experience the Dickens festival! Really? Over the years, I have seen people getting dressed like the characters?! On Saturday I run errands. I like to come into Port Jefferson and grab a specialty coffee at Starbucks. Starbucks during this weekend is slammed with tweens and parents drinking frappachinos. Parking? Forget about it, every spot is taken. Port Jefferson is a mad house with people trying to get a free marshmallow..... And why do you folks feel the need to get dressed like a Chimmey Sweep?? Dudes... really?? I'm knocking off a star. What was once nice memories are now dread when I get my coffee and dry cleaning. Nothing to see here folks, go to Sayville...
