Some of the tastiest pintxos in Bilbao! They offer a great…read morevariety of classics, but each has a unique twist. I recommend the squid, crab gratin, and chorizo. The service was a bit of a mess lol people everywhere trying to get into the queue to order. However, the staff did their best and delivered everything as quickly as possible. I recommend going at off-peak hours... Unless you want to experience ordering like the locals XD

The thing about sitting outside is that there are smokers. :/ The pinxtos are premade and just heated up. We tried txangurro (spider crab) gratin, artichoke in tempura, and crispy squid with onion. I was a bit disappointed, because I didn't care for any of them. The bread was quite crusty. I guess pinxtos aren't my thing.

Potatoe gratin with truffle mousse Very good.

Our drink order was taken and promptly delivered to our table. I ordered a cod dish (sorry can remenber the name) with the potatoes and chorizo to start. Niki ordered the hake with risotto. Our food came out in a reasonable amount of time. The potatoes and chorizo was incredible. The chorizo was spicy and the potatoes were crisp and all covered with a light cream sauce. To die for! The fish was a nice dish. Cod covered with both a lightly spiced red sauce and a delicate cream sauce. It was different but tasty. Nikis dish which I tasted was pouchini mushroom risotto with a hake fillet grilled. It was again different but very tasty. We passed on dessert since we were so full but we will gave to come back and get a slice of cheesecake.

I ordered the stuffed chicken with mushrooms, such a big and delicious portion that I could not finish. Staff was friendly but slightly understaffed once the dinner crowd picked up. House Rioja was good enough so my non red wine drinker partner loved it!

Our bartender grabbed the icecubes for my drink with his hands. Luckily, I'm not squeamish. We paid cash and sat down. They clearly wanted everyone out before midnight. They were hauling in their chairs to stack. There were bugs crawling all over the bar. I watched them scurry and hide in the cracks. The room is really neat, but needs a good scrub. The bar stools that have cracked covers need attention. I wish I'd had a chance to eat the famous lamb pinchos. The pictures looked yummy. Prices were decent. There is outdoor seating available.
Definitely a must stop while in Bilbao…read more Unfortunately, we were already quite full by the time we arrived to Cafe Iruña Colon de Larreategui since we were having a day of gastronomy. We ordered a few pinxtos, but unfortunately, I cannot remember exactly what we ordered. However, I do remember that we all enjoyed what we ordered...whatever it was. ;) The service is pretty straightforward and the staff was nice and very helpful in helping us decided what to try. I will say that the overall ambiance was beautiful because the restaurant/cafe has retained a lot of the aesthetic from when it opened in the early 1900s. As a tourist, I thought the prices of the pinxtos and wines were pretty reasonable. Perhaps, if we visit Bilbao again, we should make Cafe Iruña our first stop.
The bar area. Great pintxos!
The perfect pincho is on the left. Jamón toast! I know it looks odd, but the jamón and mayo combo with the perfect toast, eat this thing!

They open for dinner at 9pm, and you will need reservations. We had our hotel arrange the reservation. They specialize in Ribeye and fresh fish, both grilled. We ordered the Ox Chop Ribeye for two. It weighed over a Kilogram and was prepared to our request of medium-rare. It came with a fantastic amuse bouche of puréed squash soup and a bite of a seafood salad. We split a fresh lettuce, tomato, grated cheese, and olive oil salad. The tomatoes were perfectly ripe and tasty. The steak was the best we have had in Spain. In my younger days I could have finished it all, but no more. The service was very attentive and the staff was very helpful and friendly. We considered ordering grilled octopus as a starter and they said it would be to much. They were right. It was not inexpensive (€171) but worth every euro. Can't recommend it enough.

Many basque speaking locals frequent the store, which is a good sign too. The snails are fantastic too! Try it with some bread
