Warning regarding TipTop Plumbing & Heating Inc. (Calgary)…read moreOur experience involved repeated repairs, misleading cost information, and a lack of transparency that ultimately resulted in us paying more for repairs than the actual replacement cost of a new hot water on demand unit. HERE ARE THE KEY FACTS: *Over two service visits, TipTop charged us $2,307 in parts and labour to repair our 12-year-old Navien NEP-240A system (in 2013 $'s was $2697 installed). *During both visits, TipTop repeatedly told us that a replacement unit installed would cost "around $6,000." *After experiencing ongoing issues, we independently confirmed the actual cost of a new NEP-240A unit to be $2,130 + GST (Wolseley Canada, 18-Nov-2025). *Another reputable Calgary plumbing company subsequently quoted ~$2,800 installed for the same model. *Only after we questioned the discrepancy did TipTop provide a written quote for a different, lower-cost model at $5,240 + GST, not including a partial refund and discount. TIMELINE SUMMARY Incident #1 - 2 Oct 2025: Our Navien NEP-240A developed a leak and we lost hot water. TipTop quoted $1,278 + GST for repairs. When we asked about replacement, we were told verbally and by text that it would cost "roughly $6,000 installed." Based on that information, we proceeded with the repair. Incident #2 - 17 Nov 2025: Six weeks later, we had another leak and loss of hot water. TipTop quoted another $1,016 + GST (less a returning-customer discount). Again, the only replacement guidance offered was the same ~$6,000 estimate. Incident #3 - 18-20 Nov 2025: Further issues occurred the next day. At this point, after paying $2,307, we researched the actual replacement cost ourselves. We raised this with TipTop employees, who then offered a quote for a different, lower cost model at $5,240 + GST, including a partial refund and discount brought the total to $3,742 still far above the true market cost. FINAL ASSESSMENT Had TipTop disclosed accurate replacement costs from the beginning, we would not have approved repeated repairs on a 12-year-old unit. The lack of transparency around true replacement pricing resulted in unnecessary expenses and lost trust. Based on our experience, we will not be continuing business with TipTop. I strongly recommend customers ask for detailed, itemized replacement quotes and verify market prices independently before moving forward.

After 5 or 6 attempts I was able to leave them a message but after 3 weeks no one has called me back. Fortunately I found DHL on line (he had the best reviews) He was prompt courteous, and had us up and running in no time. I arranged for him to come back the week after to do a major service on our boiler that hadn't been done and he was able to do it with minimal cost. I would certainly recommend DHL, Mark was great.

I'm sure I'm not the only female who cringes when I have to call in a trades person for some…read moreservice or repair in my home on something I know nothing about. Women are not stupid but the male/female brain is wired differently. There was a problem with the boiler for my walk-out level in-floor heating and I had no heat. I called the company who had originally installed the boiler system and luckily they could come to my home the same day. The service man showed up, inspected the boiler, told me he could not do the work that day and that his office would call me to set another appointment. He also charged me (company policy) an embarrassingly high amount of money for his house call. I had no heat in that part of the house all over Christmas and through to the third week of January when I made a call asking why I had not yet been contacted. By this time I had absolutely no confidence left with this company. I did make another appointment with them but felt so unsure that I cancelled the appointment to seek out someone else. On line I found DHL Mechanical and actually got to speak to Mark, the owner and not a recording. Even though he was extremely busy, within a few days DHL were at my home and came prepared to work on the boiler right away. I found Mark to be polite, articulate and very knowledgeable. Each step of the way he explained what the boiler issues were and what would be required to fix the problems. Mark worked that day and then had to return a couple of days later with some additional parts to finish the job. I was impressed by his diligence in making a follow up phone call to me after a couple of days to check that everything was now working and that I had heat again. DHL did a great job and their level of service should be what all companies aspire to give their customers. Good job, well done!

On Oct 29, 2025 I requested a quote from Mr. Mike's Plumbing to cap off a gas line to a fireplace…read morethat I was removing. The representative arrived and advised he had to do an inspection of the gas line to determine what needed to be done and ensure that it was in good condition and that there would be a charge for the inspection. He spent about 15 minutes inspecting and advised that he would have to make a number of holes in the dry wall ceiling below the fireplace to find where the gas line could be capped off. I advised him and showed him a hole that I had cut in the floor as I was replacing the floor and that the gas line could be capped off within a few feet of the fireplace. You could see the direction that the gas line was running through the hole. He also advised that their service trucks were well stocked with all the materials that would be required to cap off the gas line. He then called the technician who was to do the work and advised him of what had to be done. In addition he made a number of calls to his other customers and spent approximately 1 hour at my place mostly spent on making calls to other customers. The technician arrived to start doing the work around 8:00 PM. I had already cut the hole in the floor to fully expose the connection that had to be capped and it would only require the disconnection of the gas line to the fireplace and put a simple cap on it. He shut off the gas line and went to his truck to get the cap. He was there for almost half an hour searching for the cap but didn't have one so he fashioned something together using about 4 fittings to cap off the line. I went down stairs while he started on the work of disconnect the gas line from the main line. I heard him struggling for about 15 minutes to try to disconnect the gas line from the main line so I went upstairs to see what the problem was. I observed that he was tightening the fitting instead of turning it the right way to loosen it. I explained to him that he had to turn it the opposite way to loosen it which he did successfully. I would think that disconnecting the small gas line and capping it could easily have been done within about half an hour at the most by a competent gas fitter. He finally finished capping the line off and advised that it was company policy that he now had to re-inspect the work which would be an additional charge for his inspection. I asked him what he was going to inspect and he couldn't explain what he was inspecting for. He then went to his truck and phoned his office I presume to get direction on how to handle this inspection. He came back and advised me that I did not have to pay for an additional inspection. The total charge for this fiasco was $488.23 which would have been over $100.00 more if they had not cancelled the charge for the second inspection. It is my opinion that the incompetence of the company and the cost of disconnecting a fully exposed gas line and capping it off which could have been done with 1 cap with easy access is excessive. This is taking advantage of senior citizens. The owner of the company did not return my call although they did offer to give me $50 back which I refused. If there was a rating of less than 1 I would have certainly given it to this company.
