One of my friends used to live in South Africa and she was recently very excited when we found a South African bar (in Nottingham, called Cape). She was even more excited once she realised that they sold biltong, which is apparently some kind of raw, dried, hung meat... Well, she liked it.
On discovering this shop, I ventured inside to see if they had any of this mysterious meat product which I could give to her. In fact, they did have some but it looked a little dubious and I decided that I'd leave it to her, as an expert, to let me know if it was acceptable!
I continued to look around the shop, though, and was myself excited to find plantain crisps, a staple of my diet when I was in Kenya a few years ago.
However, there was no prices on any of the products. A little irritating but no real problem. But, then, when I asked the man at the till if he knew how much they were, he was a little bit surly in his reply.
Out of principle I would not normally continue to shop but I really felt that hankering for some plantain crisps.
I would say, then, that I will continue to go back here until I find somewhere better, though that doesn't mean that this is actually a great place... read more
