I didn't stay at this resort, but my friend did and said she really enjoyed it. They have 2 sides at the resort; an adult area with a pool for adults only and a family area with a pool for families. The lodging locations are kept separate because it seems adults who come to Holbox really want to be away from small kids. Or at least that's what I gather after staying at another hotel on the island that I found out was adult only. Odd.
This review isn't about the hotel itself though. Since I was staying at an adult only hotel down the beach and they didn't really want my friend and her kids chilling on their beach chairs mucking up the joint, we would walk down to Xaloc's (pronounced Shlock) beachfront area. They have lots of different seating areas on the beach with a couple of chairs covered by a palapas. Multiple times on this trip we would post up in one of these covered areas. As long as you buy food and drink from the cafe/bar all is good with the hotel. A server will probably walk out to you after you sit down, but if he doesn't just head straight back across the sand road and you will see the bar.
You can order loads of different things here, but the top items for me, especially when on Holbox, is limonade and ceviche. Limonade is basically lemonade, only made from limes. Tart and less sweet then typical lemonade, a pitcher of it will quench your thirst. Ceviche is a must order anywhere on the island, almost always fresh and so damn good. Here you can also get a version of ceviche that is shrimp and avocado. I don't remember how you say it in Spanish. I highly recommend that version though. I have had lots of different ceviche dishes on the island and it might be my favorite preparation. Others items to get are fries for the little ones.... they resemble potato wedges or mexican brews for you and your friends. Mmmmhhh, nothing like standing in the warm water gulping down beer. The micheladas I've had are a bit too tart for me here....they overdo it on the mixer.
To find Xaloc Resort and its beach: walk close to the end of Tiburon Ballena (the main street from the ferry) and turn right , right after you pass the main square (Av Damero). Continue down about 4 blocks or so. You can also just go all the way to the beach on Tiburon Ballena and turn right onto beach. There will be a sign for Xaloc. It's 2 hotels past the last large covered outdoor cafe. read more
