Once I got home, I Googled my walking route to find out what this magical place was, and lo! There is a cafe inside, there is a gift shop, a book shop, AND they offer classes. I signed up for an adult community education class to learn more about bookbinding, and had a blast. I learned many fun technical terms (read: throw up. Yes, really). Pictures of my first amateur creation included. I highly recommend the classes, as they stive to make everyone of all ages and abilities feel welcome. I got there a full 30 minutes early one night just to be able to browse the giftshop, which contains not only a plethora of bookbinding materials and supplies (which are pretty niche) but creations by local artists and just cool book-themes things in general. I will definitely shop there for gifts for my other book-obsessed friends. Bring a buddy and go check it out, or bring a book and just go chill in the cafe on a day when you don't feel like interacting with humanity.

They have a ton of businesses along the way- like headquarters, lunch stops, shopping, restaurants/bars that you can stop in. There are some closures on nights and weekends though so you might have to get outside if you encounter one of them. No homeless people on our route! Amazing. We were able to avoid the drug deals and users and smells of the city. We did make a mistake on the way back and landed ourselves outside. But that's fine. You can get back in somewhere else but the weather was sunny and hot- not raining or snowing, so we just walked outside. It seems pretty safe in the skyway. It's easy to walk, avoiding cars and stop lights can be faster too!

- Mill City Museum…read more Mill City Museum was one of the highlights of my time in Minneapolis and is absolutely worth visiting. One important thing to know is that the museum closes around 4:30 p.m., so plan accordingly. I would recommend giving yourself at least 90 minutes to two hours. You could move through faster, but you would miss a lot of the history and displays. Admission was around $15, and it was completely worth the price. After purchasing a ticket, you receive a sticker with a scheduled time for the Flour Tower experience. When that time arrives, you report to the designated area on the first floor. While waiting, there is plenty to explore about the history of the mills, the surrounding area, and the enormous role Minneapolis played in the flour industry. I do not want to spoil the Flour Tower experience, but I will say this: it is absolutely worth doing. My advice is to sit in the front row near the middle. I happened to choose that seat by chance, and it ended up being the best seat in the house. The experience genuinely surprised me and became one of the first things I told friends and family about when I returned home. Afterward, you are taken to the top of the building, where there are excellent views of the surrounding area. You can see the Pillsbury Mill across the river, the Stone Arch Bridge, St. Anthony Falls, the lock and dam, the Guthrie Theater, nearby park areas, and portions of the historic mill ruins. Once you return to the first floor, you can also walk through and see the ruins up close. I spent about an hour and a half here and felt that was a good amount of time, although someone who enjoys reading every display could easily spend two hours or more. I highly recommend Mill City Museum, especially for anyone visiting Minneapolis for the first time. It is educational, creative, memorable, and one of those attractions that is much more impressive than you may expect going in.

This makes a delightful time to walk by and enjoy some pieces of art. There isn't much, considering the space, but this is a trip worth making. There's a lot of talent that's displayed in there. There's also a good variety of pieces that gave me a new perspective of the world, one that I never would have thought imaginable. They have a special uniqueness that I describe as "je ne sais quoi". They have sculptures, sketches, paintings, and a lot of other cool things. I'll be back to check out more art.

This library is STUNNING. I don't think I could possibly take photographs that would do it justice,…read moreit's an architectural piece of art. Manages to be huge and modern and glassy while still feeling cozy. It's my absolute favorite place to curl up with a book for a few hours, or bring my laptop and work on writing my novel. It is also very clean, including the bathrooms, with helpful staff. I will say there are many homeless people who like to sleep on the comfy furniture here, and the stench can be something fierce. I'm not trying to be insensitive, but really... the smell is enough to gag me. But when I lived in Honolulu and Portland they had this same problem in the grand main branch of their library. I think it's just what happens in major cities. Fortunately, there are three floors of reading lofts where they do not go, and also all four floors have private study rooms available. You can reserve them online, or you can ask to be let into a walk-in one. They always have several available. Another nice thing about this library is the desks. They have reading lamps and power outlets for laptops. And the place is flooded with natural light. It makes a huge difference in my mental focus and clarity of mind to research or write somewhere with light that is both bright and soft, with a controlled temperature. We are lucky to have this library.

It gets extremely hot, sound quality is not great, bathroom access is challenging, and it's just super crowded. Standing so long, if you get there for the opener, is really hard on the feet. There's almost no seating in the whole venue. Every time I'm there, at least one person passes out and has to be taken away. Make sure you drink enough water and are healthy enough for a very hot, stand on your feet evening.

This is a small, but very good and free modern art museum on the campus of the U of Minnesota…read more The building has the iconic shape of architect Frank Gehry. The exhibits are on one floor with restrooms and a small terrace with a great view of the river and downtown Minneapolis. I really liked the permanent collection and the special exhibit by Asian artists, including a 165 foot-long beautiful painted scroll. If you are into modern art, it is well worth a visit. Another nice touch is the inexpensive, garage parking in the base of the building. You part and take the elevator directly up into the museum lobby.
