I have known and liked Wäls beers since my first tasting at the Bohemia brewery in Petrópolis, so I had high expectations going into my dinner here. That said, this place surpassed my expectations in every facet. The restaurant opens relatively early to make a great stop for some happy hour beers, an afternoon snack, or an early supper. It is also open late so you can enjoy their countless beers late into the night. Apparently the restaurant is the first, exclusive place that Wäls has opened, and I hope this leads to more branches. The design of the restaurant is unique and modern, featuring an upstairs area, one of the longest bars I have seen in Brazil, outdoor seating, and plenty of seating indoor. Each of the areas has a distinct feel too, which makes sitting in each almost feel like a different restaurant.
The staff here is excellent, and our waiter seemed very knowledgeable about the beer and the food on the menu. He provided some good recommendations and even brought out some of the beer bottles we weren't familiar with so we could check out the details up close. He seemed to always be ready if we needed him and checked in consistently to make sure we were enjoying our meal, something we don't get a lot of in Rio.
As far as the beer goes, this ranks as one of my top places in Brazil. The Wäls beer is always good, and they seem to have every Wäls option on tap. I was especially surprised to see their Petroleum Imperial Stout on tap. In addition Wäls beers, they have a few visiting beers on tap, and in this case I tried the Bohemia/Wäls Oito e Um Session Stout. I haven't seen the beer anywhere else and it was one of the better stouts I have had. The top beer, without a doubt, was the Wäls/Goose Island Alambique County. A black tripel brewed with bananas and chestnuts and aged in cachaça barrels, I now have a new favorite beer.
The food is right on par with everything else. The carranquinhas was advertised as being the most Mineiro dish you can get, and I must agree. Thin toasted strips of pão de queijo to serve as bruschetta, carne seca, and Mineiro requeijão, all topped with thin pieces of lemon. Served in a bunch of 10, this alone was more than enough for one single person. I also tried the Wäls Burger, a collaboration between Wäls and local favorite Duke & Duke. I hate to sound like a broken record, but this too is now on the top of my list as new favorite burger, and I have eaten a lot of burgers. Great bread, flavorful toppings, and a juicy, fresh patty. I can't even put into words how much I loved this burger.
In all, the Wäls Gastropub is everything I could have hoped for and more. The absolutely perfect spot for any occasion and a must for locals and visitors alike. read more
