WRUW FM 91.1 Cleveland embodies the spirit of college radio. The station always has an incredibly diverse lineup, from your typical college student indie-rock shows to public affairs shows to (supposedly) the longest running jazz show in the country (Down By The Cuyahoga on Friday nights). The station is operated out of Case Western Reserve University, so the DJs are split between community members and CWRU students. Not every show will be your favorite genera or expertly produced, but the vast diversity of shows pretty much guarantees you'll be able to find a few shows you love. The DJs here are all volunteers, so each show is on the air because the DJ really wants to be doing it. For listeners, this means the DJs have immense knowledge of and passion for their genre. WRUW may lack some of the polish of a commercial radio station, but the incredible diversity of programming and unbridled passion of the DJs at this radio station more than makes up for that at this Cleveland gem. The Case Western Radio station is not the best and brightest in the Universe, but it sure does kick the hell out of almost all the others in the Cleveland stratosphere. An eclectic mix, no Top 40, and no real commercials to speak of, and (in this day and age of ClearChannel-dominated airwaves) you have a winner on your hands. Their commercials and "House Cat Diaries" keep me laughing even on the 4th or 5th time I hear them. Keep rockin' WRUW! read more

Dead. Been resting on laurels for years. Used to be the best, now it's rapidly descending into a CLE cliche of bullshit you can hear at anytime on any Clear Channel station anywhere. Still some gems on the air, but so few and far between. Whenever I make the mistake of switching from WCSB, chances increase everytime that I'll hear the Doors, or Jethro Fucking Tull, or name your Cleveland classic rock nightmare. In Cleveland, we are crazy lucky to have a few great college radio stations. One of them is WRUW, which I would, pound for pound, put up against any of your fancy-pants huge-ass metropolis independent radio stations. Many of my musical discoveries of the last few years came from this place, for better or worse. Highlights for me are the Occasional Detour (Thursday, 8-10 a.m.) and Stone Cold Bikini (Sat., 9-11 a.m.), but they're all good. read more

This is the crown jewel of Cleveland radio and college radio nationwide. Every genre imaginable, public affairs and great personalities. It also has the best signal of the big three college stations. I have hung out with numerous djs and attended many station-related events. All were great times. It is an all volunteer gig, so these people truly put their hearts and souls(and free time) into making this the best experience for the listener. The best part: no commercials! No more rotting eardrums from ads for car lots or dick pills. read more

I love this station...something different all the time, and almost all of it worthwhile (some of the news programming is a bit over the top, but its a college station so what can you do). More metal than any other station in the country, and thats a fact. A jewel in the Cleveland crown. read more
