Yes, somebody made it while sitting in their mom's basement, using Angelfire. Now, behold the images of vintage Motley Crue flashing before your eyes. Want something else amazing? Click on the "Foxy Girls" link. See images of girls dressed as hair-metal groupies in a non-ironic fashion. This is what I wanted to be when I was 12. Seriously. As for music, this is what a classic rock station should be. Excellent mix from the 60s through the 80s, no nu-metal, no emo, just classic rock through butt rock/glam metal. PERFECT. This made my most recent trip to the Motherland bearable.

Do they only have 10 cds that were bequeathed to them in some dead dude's will, say 15 years ago? It sure sounds like it, no variety, just the same tired classics from Michael Jackson, Prince, Brittany Spears, etc., constantly. Everything seems to be on an endless loop. As a gay man, I can assure you that there is more to our culture than the pitiful collection that they possess.

That's a quote from a WCSB DJ during a midday shift. WCSB is somewhat like a guide to me when I make my annual visits to Cleveland each summer. It's something that my radio dial never wavers from in the car, except, maybe, when the high school kids take over and play Adam Levine, or the Indian trance music just becomes too much. But most of the time, the music on WCSB is a beautiful, eclectic but unknown mix of older and contemporary music, flanked by awkward PSAs and often college-aged DJ banter. More often than not, they're playing a gritty variety of obscure 60's/70's music, punk or garage rock that could not suit my drives through the city better. Anything from The Cramps to the original Spanish version of "Be My Baby." Something to compliment the rows of idle brick factories, abandoned apartment complexes, potholed streets, and forlorn, shirtless old men wandering the streets. I cherish these drives through Cleveland's gritty neighborhoods, and being able to stream this station while elsewhere only helps to remind me of what I really like about the city and why I continue to come back.

The station is operated out of Case Western Reserve University, so the DJs are split between community members and CWRU students. Not every show will be your favorite genera or expertly produced, but the vast diversity of shows pretty much guarantees you'll be able to find a few shows you love. The DJs here are all volunteers, so each show is on the air because the DJ really wants to be doing it. For listeners, this means the DJs have immense knowledge of and passion for their genre. WRUW may lack some of the polish of a commercial radio station, but the incredible diversity of programming and unbridled passion of the DJs at this radio station more than makes up for that at this Cleveland gem. Full disclosure: I've been a student DJ here for the last 4 years.

We liked America's Next Top Model until that became unwatchable(the first minute you say?). I have a high tolerance for pain. The main reason i like this station is for broadcasting the Ghoul for most of the late 90's to early 2000's. The show that single-handedly made me want to live here my whole life and be a weirdo. It is the only local late night show that mattered. More hip than Big Chump and Little Toilet. Usually on anywhere from Friday night at midnight to Sunday morning at 3(they kept changing the time so they could show more infomercials). This was during prime partying hours. Full of Cleveland lore like Dorothy, Ghoulardi, Baskerville Hounds tunes and featuring the acting talents of Uncle Scratch drummer, Brother Ed. Monster movies of the lowest caliber accentuated with sound effects, and segments where the Ghoul blew up pumpkins, turkeys and his nemesis, Froggy. Norton furniture ads first ran during this show. They are now a local legend themselves. I miss this show so very very badly. MST3K is a close second, but doesn't have that local flavor. This place would get a five if t was still on the air. Also home to the toupeed Reverend Ernest Angley. Please bring back the Ghoul.

What's so wrong with re-visiting the stuff that was on before, that's already paid for, that is of a higher quality? Wait. This is what I should be saying: Instead of raising all that coin to pay for the Chin From Minneapolis and all this other provincial crap produced by REAL PBS station, spend it right HERE. Do some local programming. I don't mean another lame talking-head deal where you get some suits into the empty studio on Sunday morning and grill them about Cleveland's future. Local music. Local art. Local HUMOR? We have all this talent just waiting at Hopkins for the next flight to Anywhere Else; go interview THEM!
