It's fully licensed by the Federal Communications Commission and broadcasts in HD 24/7, 365 days a year. WBDG first took the air in 1966. It's actually a rather remarkable radio station that I still listen to long after I graduated from high school. And college. And, well, you get the point. I'm old. I love WBDG. WBDG plays a wide variety of music, offers diverse programming, and broadcasts Ben Davis sports, news, and features largely targeting Indy's Westside and Eastern Hendricks County. WBDG has hosted "School Talk With Emerson" since 2003. It's hosted by Emerson Allen, an Indy resident who has a long existing reputation for building up Indy's youth. I've had the privilege of being a guest on "School Talk" and to this day maintain a positive relationship with Emerson and everyone at WBDG. I've long been impressed with the high quality broadcasting and professionalism of WBDG's staff. I remember one incident, in particular, that greatly impressed me with how it was addressed as a teachable moment for broadcasting - a student was broadcasting the news and got distracted by someone in the studio and started laughing. Unfortunately, the story he was reporting at the time was actually quite tragic. It bothered me - so, I dropped them an e-mail and expressed my concern (politely, of course...these are students who are still learning!). It was handled beautifully. I'd love to know if that student is still in broadcasting. Sportscaster Zion Brown is one of my current favorites. Zion can seriously broadcast. I look forward to watching him grow. In 2019, Grant Covey picked up two national awards and was nominated for a third. The radio station has a long history of state, regional, and national recognition and watching its student broadcasters grow into career professionals. You can get podcasts, interviews, etc. on Audio Boom including Emerson's show, sports, interviews, and other podcast content. WBDG also has an HD2 station that broadcasts 70s, 80s, and 90s music. WBDG was one of the first radio stations in Marion County owned by a school district. It started out as a 10 watt station (trust me, that's small) and has grown into a 400 watt station (that's much better!). During the 80s (my high school days!), WBDG could even be found making a dent in the ratings because it was the only local station that played disco. Man, I miss disco. I've been in the studio and it's quite impressive - and surprisingly accessible. I was able to work my way in there for an interview just fine. Famous alumni include some names familiar to Indy folks including Kristi Lee (she just introduced me at an awards ceremony not long ago - what a great human!), Dave Calabro, Kevin Calabro, Kevin Gregory, Scott Hoke, Liz Dixon, Dana Webb (a former CMA DJ of the Year!), DJ Marcus, Paul Mendenhall, and quite a few others. Seriously. If you've never listened, I highly recommend it. I love supporting up-and-coming broadcasters and broadcast professionals. They're well informed, talented, passionate, and a lot of fun. WBDG has been and remains a positive voice in Indianapolis radio and it's exciting to see Wayne Township and Ben Davis's long history of devotion to the program.

She sang three song including her hit "I hope" Afterwards she signed autographs and took pictures with everyone. It was great to see an up and comer in such an intimate setting. If you don't remember her she got third place in 2018.Her voice is amazing and she sings country. She is only 19 years and very talented. We'll be seeing big success from her. Sometimes though, particulary on Sundays they play some very old and sometimes not so great music, and that's why I take one star off. I'm not going to deduct a star for the mistakes that you hear in the broadcasts, because hey, this is a student run radio station and a learning experience, and they shouldn't be dinged for that.

It was only when I got back home and did some research on this station that I discovered it's run by Carmel High School!! Who knew today's high schoolers had such good taste in music? Since then I've heard some Mazzy Star, New Order, a fantastic cover of Joy Division's Shadowplay by the Killers, and many other of my favorites! I'll take one star off because sometimes instead of music, it goes back to what normal high school radio stations talk about- HIGH SCHOOL! Yeah, I know...how could they? This radio station is part of the "K Love" network. No programming is done locally. This is a…read moreChristian radio station, but as far as I can tell, they play only "praise music", which is one sub-genre within the bigger umbrella of Christian or gospel music. In fact, their genre is so narrow, that it all sounds alike to me. It's as if they have only three songs in their playlist. Of course there's more, but it all sounds the same. Not only that, most of the music is amateurish compared to what you normally hear on broadcast radio, even on traditional Christian or gospel stations. The performers are invariably young-sounding (college age or 20-somethings.) This is an ad-free, "user supported" radio network. They get some corporate donations, and the donors are mentioned occasionally, but they are more like acknowledgements than commercials. This is just my opinion, but combine the fact they are ad-free with the amateurish music, and it makes me think they are limited to royalty-free songs by young artists who are just trying to get exposure. Their website, www.klove. com, talks about their ministry being more than just the radio stations, and that seems fine. Kudos to them for their good intentions, and all the good things they do in their ministry. Their heart is in the right place. And God bless the artists who pour their heart and soul into the music. But as far as the quality and listen-ability goes, the music and the programming choices of this station are just not commecial broadcast quality. I'd rather listen to tapes of Sandi Patti, Pat Boone, (Debbie Boone even), and [gasp!] the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. There are at least two other Christian radio stations in the Indianapolis market., including WQME, http://www.yelp.com/biz/wqme-fm-98-7-anderson When I want uplifting music, I rotate between them. The boring repetitive sameness and the amateurish quality make it so I can listen to WKLU for only 1 or 2 songs, and then I have to change stations. Note to the owners: I'd gladly listen to commercials in order to get a wider variety and a higher quality of music. (200th "first" review.)

The huge windows downstairs look off onto the circle and a new permanent table and chair installation (for the Circle itself) sits in decent size nook attached to Emmis. I expect employees will eat summer lunch there and people watch. The radio station had great sound, awesome and friendly people and was easy to navigate. Artwork, radio information and history as well as encouraging pictures outline the walls. It's a beautiful interior. I hope to get a reason to return.

Plus, so far I have not found that they do not reduce their power output in off hours thus curtailing their station reception to the point it is not receivable. I like the format. They play a wide variety of songs and limit the number of commercial interruptions. I'm not too sure how to label the format other than they are a MIX station and play classic rock and roll songs plus top 40 pop songs from each decade.

There is no local programming that I know of. The frequency is 88.3 FM, but I can't seem to verify if the call letters are still WHZN. It's non-profit, listener-supported, but they have business "partners" that can advertise online, and maybe on the air too. I like SHINE better than WKLU (K-Love). They generally have a more varied, more professional and more mature-sounding playlist. And supposedly their playlist is only with "signed" artists. Area coverage seems good throughout metro Indianapolis. I think the transmitter is in New Whiteland, if I read a news story correctly (it wasn't 100% clear.) According to a news release, Olivet Nazarene University (Shine-FM) bought WHZN in July of 2011.
