    Callestick Farm Ice Cream

    Callestick Farm Ice Cream

Though I don't think this is the best ice cream in the world (or country or even county), I *do*…read morethink this is a great attraction. It was a lovely little farm, with cute towns and another farm (that makes cider) nearby. In the main building, there are detailed descriptions of how the farm and the dairy work, including photos, video, and a peek into the facilities themselves. It wasn't crowded - even on a Saturday (though note that you can't see the dairy workers live on Saturdays). There were farm animals you could pet or see (pigs, chicks, etc.), and a place to wash your hands afterwards. The gift shop was cute: it sold fudge, stuffed animals, greeting cards, books, plates, and of course, ice cream. The tea room had ample flavors, and the cashier/ice cream scooper was very kind and charming. I enjoyed the chocolate fudge flavor, and my friends liked their white chocolate hazelnut and mint chocolate chip. They also offered clotted cream vanilla, clotted cream strawberry, clotted cream black currant, cherry jubilee, pistachio, oriental ginger, honeycomb crunch, banoffee, and lemon sorbet. Looks like the flavors vary depending on when you visit. I'm so glad we stopped here. It was an excellent way to break up the drive.

We're talking rich, creamy, made with fresh fruit and clotted cream, bursting with flavour, sweet but not overpowering, icy wonderfulness here. The first time I had this, I was in shock ice cream could be this amazing. Fast forward 7 years, and I don't feel like I'm actually home unless my visit has involved eating Callestick Farm ice cream. The absolute best is the blackcurrant & cream (made with Cornish clotted cream!!!) ice cream, but I'm not positive they're still making that. Otherwise, the strawberry and cream is a close second! Best of all, not only can you get these by going to the farm (which I've done) but now, you can also pick up pints at Sainsbury's, and tons of local restaurants, tourist traps (does every English Heritage site in Cornwall stock Callestick?), and shops also sell Callestick... Sometimes I'm really surprised that I don't leave Cornwall weighing 10 pounds more than when I arrived... and also, really grateful I can't get this stuff in Canada.

Winking Prawn - So many yummy prawns!

They also have an extra covered patio area which appeared to be dog friendly, as well as lots of outdoor seating with lovely views of the beach. We shared the fruits de mar platter and it was more than enough for two people. You could honestly share it between three and order a side if you need more! The crab was absolutely delicious, honestly nothing was bad. The fries were some of the nicest we've had down here too. They serve Salcombe Dairy ice cream as well and the coffee and banana flavours were both really nice and not synthetic or overpowering. Definitely recommend for the views, excellent service and delicious food.

Great little place just outside of Salcombe and across from a beautiful little beach. I had a…read morebeer, a prawn sandwich (FYI, in England a prawn is actually a popcorn shrimp), and the fries. The signature Prawn Juice beer was great, as were the fries, which were sort of like small steak fries. I wasn't a fan of the shrimp sandwich. Next time I might try it without the Marie Rose sauce (which is basically fry sauce in America.) The servers were super friendly. And the outdoor seating, which consists of a number of wood picnic tables, was really nice. They have indoor seating as well. I went on a busy spring Sunday and was still able to find seating outside within a few minutes. Local tip: you can park in the neighboring public car park/parking lot next to the Winking Prawn and take a 30 min walk in to downtown Salcombe, where parking can be tricky. The walk is a bit hilly. Bring coins (GBP coins) for the paid parking, if possible! Otherwise you must download an app and pay via your phone. No credit cards at the machine. It's about 1.5 GBP/hour. You need to single pound coins, not pence.
