I have been watching channel 6 for years. I've tolerated the change in the programming...but the half hour program consists of 15 minutes of repeated weather, 10 minutes of sports and 5 minutes of actual news in the area. I feel that some of the news anchors arent sincere and come off as fake...they come off as joking but they're laughing with each other and it's hard to take them seriously. You (WRGB) are well on your way to boring people to death and not watching.... people watch the morning news because it WAS funny and a little unpredictable. And really...most of the long timers are buffoons who are lifers (born and raised and never left Albany...). The lady at 6pm (you know who...) is insufferable...Liz would get absolutely eaten alive if she pulled this Queenie thing/persona in Connecticut...but in Albany she's an institution. Not a review but want to let you know that you a broadcasting dead air whenever it is time for a commercial. At first I thought my TV died but all the other channels are fine. I tried to call you but call can't go through . Doesn't say why just says to try later. An explanation to your viewers would be nice. read more

Why are shows interrupted in the middle of a show fir commercials? Fir example I am retired abd with the price is right. This isn't a review of the TV station; it's a review of the building, which is actually historic (a fact unbeknownst to most), as a local history geek, there being no other source about this place, I feel obliged to fill in some blanks here for those on the unlikely quest to complete a tour of broadcast history and/or local Niskayuna landmarks. The somewhat unremarkable building you're looking at was built in 1957 as the second permanent home of WGY, the first commercial radio station anywhere, and WGY-WGRB, the first regular commercial television station, ever. General Electric basically invented the modern television system, and created the first "network" with NBC, of which WGY/WGRB were the second of two stations (the others being in New York City; you can't have a network without at least two outlets!) The building was built as a state-of-the-art "experimental" facility, as part of GE's research into television technology, where many new technologies developed by GE were tried out for the first time in the commercial context. These include things we take for granted, such as network relays (originally via microwave, later by satellite), remote reporting trucks, network simulcasts, and a very early version of cable TV broadcasting. It's in Niskayuna largely because of one person, important to broadcast history but who's mostly obscure, named Willard "Bill" Purcell. Bill was not college-educated, but an incredible auto-didact who constructed radio sets at home at the age of ten and later, at the age of 17, was the first battleship-based radio operator in the US Navy. He came after WWI to Schenectady and was involved in nearly every early engineering milestone for WGY before venturing into television. At the end of his career with GE, he helped design and supervised the construction of the studio building in Niskayuna (he lived nearby on Van Antwerp road, so the oddity of a TV station in what was then a little cottage suburb attached to a farming community was largely his doing) before retiring in 1960. The Purcells also owned the fourth television set, ever, and ran a variety of experiments from their Niskayuna home. The station itself got its call letters from Dr. W. R. G. Baker, who was GE's Vice President for telecommunications from the early 1940's, who was among the pioneers in setting broadcast standards that made commercial TV possible. There aren't tours of the building available, from what I hear it's been gutted many times over the years, WRGB isn't an NBC affiliate or owned by GE anymore, and the WRGB employees I've talked to seem largely ignorant of the station and this building's place in broadcast (and industrial history). But if you want to pick a place where the modern broadcast TV station was invented (now itself almost a relic of the past), this is it. read more

I have always watched the news at noon, on Channel 6; their content-sequence allowed me to get everything I needed in about 15 minutes. But the technical aspects of the broadcast - never strong - have gotten ridiculously bad in the past few weeks. There could be a story about a flood in Mechanicville while they post footage of the war in Afghanistan. And the anchor at noon, who does not seem unintelligent, continues to "flub" her lines - either of her own accord or because she's reading a bad transcript off of a projector/prompter. I thought I heard they had a virus-attack on their systems lately, which resulted in frozen screens; repeated-stories; and a strange still-screen during what would be a commercial break. However, they have always had technical problems, so this is not an excuse. Out of frustration, I have now switched to another channel for the noon-news. This is unfortunate, because it also means that I tend to miss out on top-notch Channel 6 reporting from other newscasters/journalists, like Greg Floyd. read more

Watched WRGB CBS 6 News, Albany morning and night for more than 30 years, and my husband watched far, far longer than that. But we take news very seriously in this house and find we will always be wondering if there is a slant to each story, real or perceived... Sinclair Broadcastcannot be trusted. C'mon...this is one of the best local news stations left in the country....and as someone who stayed in motels over 200 nights a year for over a decade....I have had something to compare it to. It isn't cable, it isn't Jerry Springer or Oprah News.(thankfully!)..just what you need to hear, without all the fluff you see on the cable "news" channels. They also do a good job on the weather. Don't know nuthin' about no droppin' a New York Post squirrel in the dryer to clear up mystery rash. Heck, it's TV. You want in depth info on subjects like that you go to the Internet. read more
