Bixby Knolls

Bixby Knolls

Fun quaint neighborhood in the Long Beach area I've become a fan of - especially SteelCraft open…read moreair food court w/ a brewery sub branch (Smog City), taqueria, burger joint, acai, baos, elevated coffee and wood fired pizza. Just a beat up from Downtown Long Beach aka the thick of it. This outer neighborhood is a blend of mostly residential (gorgeous homes), eateries (all the popular spots/chains, but so many small biz + mom and pop), parks (including Bixby Knolls, Scherer, Somerset and Cherry Park), schools and more. Bixby Knolls is one of the areas where brewpubs/brewhouses like Ambitious Ales, Beachwood Brewing and Dutch's Brewhouse to name a thrive. And Long Beach houses so many close by including major breweries. Parking is manageable, but I will say public transit is pretty okay in the area. You won't see the LA Metro design or logo on any city busses or shuttles, but the TAP card works on all except the water taxis or busses like the AquaLink and AquaBus. Long Beach has its own way of doing things, though part of Greater L.A. and Los Angeles County it's very independent and doing things great - Bixby Knolls being a huge part of that LBC greatness. Come for the art, the friendly people, the good food, great beer, cheers and adventure. Local flavor value is priceless.

Over the years, Bixby Knolls has lost part of it's charm. Most recently, look at Atlantic and…read moreCalifornia Avenues. Atlantic Avenue was reduced down to one lane to allow for outdoor dining for the COVID restrictions on restaurants. After the outdoor dining restrictions were lifted, multiple of the barriers and building materials were left in the street; the street still reduced to a single lane. You cannot even drive down the street during the afternoon - it will take you an hour just to get down the street! Miserable drivers, horns honking, etc. California Avenue should be re-named Speed Bump Lane! Out of nowhere, tacky looking speed bumps appeared stuck to the street. Has anybody ever watched drivers on California Avenue, aka, Speed bump Lane? Drivers are just driving around the speed bumps causing more traffic flow issues! Whoever was the one to reduce Atlantic Avenue to a single lane and place tacky speed bumps on California Avenue should be forced to drive down both streets every single day! Not to mention the self-absorbed people that have clogged up the Bixby Knolls residential areas - just take a walk through the area during the day and you will see and experience the self absorption which is the new Bixby Knolls. Very sad to see this once nice area turn into a community of Facebook moms/parents and revolving Instagram posts.

I have always heard about these places providing support to family members of their ill kids-but never knew to what extent. The house is staffed 24-7, and provides lodging in an almost resort like environment. Great care went into every detail of the house, to better provide services to their guest. Their are 19 guest rooms, and they were at 90 % occupancy. During my visit, another volunteer group had just made breakfast for the guest-while another group was cleaning doors and windows. My group got to help setting up the holiday decorations. Thanks to the many private donors, companies and people who volunteer their time to make this happen.

They have computer room, kids room, mini library, patio, play area, living room, game room, TV room, laundry and kitchen. Visitor can come visit you only in the common area from 9a-9p. They provide shuttle to go to the hospital (Need to schedule in advance). There is also free parking (they charge $5/day at the hospital). I'm thankful this place is here for us.

It was the start of something new. I'm definetly NOT a cat person.I would never think to myself "I…read moreNEED to have a pet cat !!!". But that doesn't mean I hate cats. Just more of a dog person. One morning I heard the tiniest meows coming from my drive way. I thought I was hearing things at first but then I realized... that's a kitten not a bird !! It took a broom & back & forth, but there was the tiniest black kitten under my husbands car !! We ended up naming him Lude. We fed Lude & he was a bit shy at first. It didn't take long for him to warm up to me. I made the effort of petting him daily so he wouldn't turn feral. I wasn't sure of the gender & I was worried about the possibility of him being a female & then there would be too many kittens in our backyard. I definitely don't want to contribute to the stray cat population here !! I did some research & came across this little gem not far at all from my house. With a couple emails, a date was set for Lude's surgery. The services offered included spay/neuter, rabies, de worming & flea treatment. The Little Lion Foundation also loans out the traps so no need to go out to buy one. The day of the surgery I was able to put Lude in the trap & didn't have to set up the trap to trick him in - so that was easy ! I dropped him off early in the morning & picked him up the same day around 4 pm or so. Lude was so calm & quiet the entire car ride home !! I left him in the cage over night which made me worry he would panic - but he didn't. The next day I was able to let him out & today he's back to his old self again clipped ear & all. BIG shout out to this amazing non-profit foundation !! Thank you for helping out Lude. We love the little lion foundation !

Not only was the presentation very thorough, it was efficient and organized. There are so many opportunities to volunteer, from hands on to digital/remote. They make great use of technology to streamline the self-scheduling process and are understanding of people's schedules and lives in relation to their volunteer commitments. I hope everyone gets an opportunity to help or donate to such a great organization.

the heritage clinic in long beach is literally the worst agency i have ever came across or trusted…read more they falsely have been documenting on me. they had me fill out a housing application for section 8 and never submitted it twice!!! reason that i know this is because i personally went down to the two housing agencies that these people blamed for allegedly losing my housing application in the system which are hacla and lacda and not one of those agencies have any record of my applications ever being submitted. i simply do not exist in their system and have been working with this agency since early 2022, almost 2 years already. they have not done anything for me in all of this time. i have been homeless and put myself in a homeless shelter that i found on my own, i have been there 7 months with my one-year-old and am currently pregnant however i was blessed with a new job opportunity a couple of months ago as an icms myself and they (heritage clinic carla alfonzo along with michelle stevens) exited from their agency because i disclosed that to my so-called case manager carla. they said it was a conflict of interest and they could not work with me anymore. carla sent me a supposedly copy of the application she claims she submitted for me to hacla and as of yesterday after me speaking with staff at hacla there is no record of any application or me in their system! yet carla along with her supervisor have been documenting on the homeless data base that they did submit my application however they cannot reach me and that is a complete lie! i had to block my phone number for my calls to get through to their phones and its just not fair!!! they are lying about the work that they are doing, falsifying case notes and messing up people's like me our lives because i actually had been trusting them with receiving my section 8 voucher and after being homeless for so long and all the trauma that goes on in the streets where i have had to be, little did i know i was never going to receive it because they were never doing the foot work they were claiming to be doing and definitely not helping me like they say they help people. i just want people to be more vigilant when working with the heritage clinic and not be lied to or given false hope or false news in regard to our lives and ourhousing. lastly, i have paper trail of everything that i have put on this review, e-mails, and text messages to sustain what i am saying. smh!
