Can't say enough good things about Wrangell Mountain Air. First, their customer service line were incredibly helpful during the booking process. The itinerary and instructions for flight day for thorough, which was crucial since we didn't have any reception in McCarthy. Our airbnb was luckily right next door, so there wasn't too much guesswork on where to go. There were no delays to our flightsee upon arrival to their headquarters. We were immediately shuttled to the airfield. Our pilot, David, was friendly and very straight forward in setting safety standards and expectations. Our flight was incredibly smooth, and David provided just the right amount of commentary. The views were breathtaking, and flying is really the only way to really experience Wrangell in all its entirety. I would fly again with Wrangell Mountain Air should I ever return to McCarthy. read more
Words cannot properly express how magnificent our experience was with Wrangell Mountain Air. We booked their Jewels of the Wrangells flightsee, which was a complete once-in-a-lifetime experience. We came toward the beginning of September and were worried about the weather because it hadn't been the greatest. But it was all meant to be because the weather cleared up enough for us to get a full tour of the Bagley Icefield and Icy Bay. While I'm normally a big talker, the beauty of it all was enough for me to just sit in silence and enjoy these incredible sights. Our pilot, David, was great. He gave us some information as we came upon each new area, answered all our questions, and then allowed us to just sit and enjoy it all. Our tour was definitely expensive and something we had planned in advance for. That being said, all two hours of it were worth every penny. With Wrangell St. Elias being the largest national park but so much of it being so remote, it was the perfect way to still experience the majesty of this park. read more

We originally reserved the 70 minutes Thirteen Glacier flight seeing tour at 5pm (flight actually took off at 5:30pm), unfortunately a heavy cloud coming from Root Glacier and Kennicott direction, the pilot (Brian) picked a different route for us. We saw about 5 different glaciers, the valley, lake, river and multiple mountain peaks. The views are amazing (lack of words here). The sun poked out here and there during the trip. read more
Flying Wrangell Mountain Air was honestly a moment in my life I will never forget! I am 100% grateful for the experience. I was making my way to Wrangell St. Elias National Park in McCarthy/Kennicott, Alaska...on my way towards my ultimate journey of visiting every National Park in the United States. Now...to arrive in Wrangell St. Elias NP....there are 2 modes of transportation. You can drive your car along a 60 mile gravel/dirt road to get there which was estimated to take 3 hours time. Or you can fly this...Wrangell Mountain Air for a 30 minute flight to the park. Warning...if you have a rental car with you...you are not allowed to drive the gravel road. Rental car agencies are specific about that unless you rent from a place that mentions they cater to dirt/gravel roads. For me...I initially thought I could take my rental car which I picked up in Fairbanks and lie to the company and drive the road anyways. Well...about 2 days prior to coming to McCarthy/Kennicott (home of Wrangell St. Elias) I realized I had made a mistake. I'm no longer a kid anymore. I'm 42 years old. I'm not getting away with trying to be sneaky. What if I got a flat tire? Who's going to save me? And...there's no cell phone reception along the 60 mile drive as well. Who am I kidding? I can't drive. So...now here comes Wrangell Mountain Air! For the round trip 30 minute propeller plane flight (or as it's known...Alaskan Bush Plane flight), it was $331. Not bad at all! I found this price to be very reasonable. I was so relieved and happy I chose this...the safe route to get to Wrangell St. Elias. I knew I had made the correct decision! Wrangell Mountain Air offers 3 daily flights each way to and from the park. - To McCarthy/Kennicott (Wrangell St. Elias) - 8:30am, 2pm and 5pm. - To Chitina, AK (the town near the start of the 60 mile road) - 9:05am, 2:45pm and 5:45pm. I arrived in Chitina about 1 hour before my scheduled departure time. I parked my car in the available lot (for free) and then left it there for 3 days while on my trip. No worries. For my flight to Wrangell St. Elias it was myself, another couple and the pilot. 4 of us. The pilot was ultra friendly! His name was Austin. He was great. I felt safe flying with him. Only unfortunate thing was...it was very, very cloudy outside so I never got the incredible views of the Wrangell Mountains from high above that I was hoping for. It was a little bumpy during the flight but honestly, before boarding I downed 2 small shots (airplane sized bottles) of Jack Daniels to settle me down. For my return flight from McCarthy/Kennicott back to Chitina, I flew on a slightly bigger aircraft with a 3rd row and 5 of us. Good thing I got the row in the back all to myself. I had room to move around for pictures and videos. Now, the return flight...the weather was gorgeous and sunny! For this 30 minutes I snapped some of the BEST PHOTOS from my entire Alaskan vacation! I was thrilled with this return flight! There were barely any clouds and the views from almost 4000 feet above were GLORIOUS! I couldn't have asked for a better ending to my experience from Wrangell St. Elias NP. My pilot for this flight, Jared, was informative...pointing out the sights and surroundings. He was safe in his flying. I trusted him. Overall...I couldn't have been happier! Some final notes... - When I did arrive in McCarthy/Kennicott...Wrangell Mountain Air actually drove me from the airport into town and my hotel. They also picked me up and returned me back to the airport. Thank you! - On my initial flight, the pilot required us to wear a mask. But on my return flight the pilot was okay with masks being optional (obviously due to Covid). - I booked my flight online at wrangellmountainair.com. Their website was easy and convenient. I booked my flight about 2 days prior to departure. I guess...most adventurers heading to Wrangell St. Elias do the 60 mile drive as they can take their tents, sleeping bags, hiking gear, etc...and spend their time in the great outdoors. Overall, I have no regrets not driving. I was thrilled to fly Wrangell Mountain Air. Even though it was a transportation flight to and from McCarthy/Kennicott...it really wasn't. From my pov...it was a sightseeing flight experience. Although I didn't capture the views I was yearning for on the first leg of my flight...I definitely received some of the best highlights on my return flight. For those folks who need to check off Wrangell St. Elias NP off their To-Do Lists...I would highly highly recommend flying Wrangell Mountain Air rather than chancing it on the rough 60 mile McCarthy Road. I am forever grateful for this flying experience. And the good thing about getting to all the National Parks especially the remote ones in Alaska (with no roads) like Gates of the Arctic, Katmai, Kobuk Valley and Lake Clark...is that I'll be required to fly (again, lol) Alaskan propeller bush planes to those parks as well in order to fulfill my destiny! read more

Our pilot at Wrangell Mountain Air was very professional and demonstrated great skill at flying us into a backcountry airstrip in the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park were we camped for a few nights near Nizina Glacier. The same very skilled pilot returned at the end of our backcountry camping trip to pick us up and safely fly us back to the airport in McCarthy, AK. Both flights were smooth and offered amazing scenery! read more

Wrangell Mountain Air was able to help me plan a fly in trip with barely any advance notice. Everyone I talked to was incredibly helpful and gave me some great advice to help me plan my trip. Jarrod was a great pilot and smoothly navigated rough weather on both legs of the trip. Whether you are looking for flight seeing or a reasonably priced backcountry drop off, I can't recommend WMA enough. read more

The pilots at Wrangell Mountain Air were very professional & good at navigating the skies above the mountains of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve. Unfortunately, I was so terrified that I barely enjoyed the spectacular views. Strong crosswinds from the mountains made the bush plane I took into & out of the park dip so severely & so often that I hope I never, ever do this again. If you've got the cojones, have at it. Choosing a bush plane flight instead of a bus ride into the park is a great way to cut hours off your commute & get some perspective of this old mining community & the glorious mountains/glaciers/wildlife. read more

I will be the first to admit I'm not a pilot, though I would eventually love to get my pilot license someday. But of all of my excursions I have done in my 45+ years in Alaska, some of the flight excursions have been the absolute best. And my experience with Wrangell Mountain Air is nearly at the top of that list. Having traveled to McCarthy via its infamous road several years back, during a recent fall photography tour of Alaska I decided to experiment and try a new way to get to Kennicott for a day trip. After much research, I decided I would fly in and then take the shuttle out. And I decided on Wrangell Mountain Air for the flight in. The plan was to depart from Chitina and arrive at the McCarthy airport a short 35 minutes later where I would take the shuttle bus up to Kennicott for a day of photography and sightseeing. Then that afternoon would meet the shuttle back to Chitina after meeting them at the foot bridge. This combined mode of transportation would seem to complicate the reservation process, but I found it to be quite easy and the staff at Wrangell Mountain Air was quick to respond. The day of my journey was met with partly cloudy skies and I was looking forward to getting up in the air. I arrived at the Chitina location a bit early so just walked around and waited for my flight. The flight included a short sightseeing trip around the Copper Valley along with flying along the flanks of Mt. Blackburn, over the Kennicott and Ruth Glaciers eventually before landing in McCarthy. Baggage is 30lb per pound on all flights (soft side only) and I was well within that allotment even with all my camera gear. There was another couple flying with me that day. We met the pilot and I found myself in the back seat of the plane. Which was fine, as I don't think there was a bad view on that flight. We took off promptly at 9:05 a.m. and arrived at McCarthy at 9:35 where my shuttle transfer took me up to McCarthy and then eventually to Kennicott. The flight was amazing and our pilot sprinkled stories and facts about his experience throughout the flight. In hindsight I wish I would have taken the flight both ways and I will be going back to experience more of Wrangell Mountain Air's flight offerings. I can't speak highly enough about them. It was an amazing experience and a true way to see Alaska that many others are not able to see for themselves. The one way trip was $139.75 per person. Definitely fair in my view. And I saved my car from the wear and tear of the Edgerton Highway. Highly recommend. read more

The folks at Wrangell Mountain Air were super easy to work with. My wife and I honeymooned in Alaska and flew into McCarthy for a couple days. The plane that came to pick us up was right on time, and the pilot gave us an impromptu tour of Kennicott Glacier on the way in! It was more than just a quick flight, the pilot made sure we had a great time. The view of the Wrangell Mountains from the plane was absolutely insane. Highly recommend Wrangell Mountain Air! read more
Amazing experience. This is the only time I've ever flown in a smaller plane, and the views were absolutely incredible. Just make sure not to leave any valuables in your car as you'll most likely be in Kennicott for a few days with the vehicle unattended. read more
