This is a great place to stay while in McCarthy! Our family of 3 stayed on the upper floor (king bed, twin bed and pull out couch). Showers are very scarce this very small, rustic town, so having a warm shower in the Shushanna Guesthouse was an amazing luxury! The building is located very close to the St. Elias Alpine Guides main headquarters, so communication and access to our guide was great, before and after our backpacking adventure. The guesthouse was very clean and very spacious and the managers are very friendly and helpful. We would highly recommend it! read more

This place was a great find. Was not sure what kind of accommodations we would find in McCarthy which is an old school Alaskan town at the end of the road. Shushanna house was a touch of modern in the middle of all that Alaskan adventure. After a day of hiking the glacier or rafting or climbing we had a place to return that was clean, comfortable and with all the amenities. And the hosts are locals with great knowledge of the area and nice people also. Would strongly recommend staying here if you find your self in McCarthy. read more

My sisters and I recently visited beautiful McCarthy Alaska and stayed in the Spruce Moose at Shushanna Guesthouse - what a beautiful place. It had everything we needed - a full kitchen, hot showers, comfortable beds, and beautiful surroundings. It is very conveniently situated on the edge of town. What a great place to come home to after a day of adventuring!! We loved it and would definitely choose it again. If you're headed for McCarthy, you should already be aware that you won't find city-like or fancy digs. But you will find authentic Alaskan pioneer spirit and scenery that'll knock your socks off. The Shushanna Guesthouse was a perfect setting for our group gathering and opportunity to be a part of the tiny community - room to sleep 9, with the kitchen for doing a bit of cooking, and the front porch and yard for gathering, playing music and general fun. The beds were comfy and everything was clean and functioning. The kitchen is equipped with a hodgepodge of cutlery and dishes ranging from utilitarian to what must have once been someone's best china. We felt the limits set to accommodate a fragile septic system and the reliance on solar power were no-brainers, and easily done. Well worth it to be in such an untamed and gorgeous place. Gaia and crew took care of anything we needed. We'd go back in a heartbeat! read more
