In 2011 it was sold to WYEP, the call letters were changed to WESA. Today, most of the programming is NPR produced programming and news from the BBC, WESA has locally produced shows during the daytime hours. Weekends brings some great shows like "Wait, Wait....Don't Tell Me" and "Car Talk". For the Jazz fans, there is a three hour show of jazz Music every Saturday evening at 6 PM. In a town riddled with oldies stations, all sports talk, bigoted, conservative windbags, and way too much country, it's refreshing to listen to news produced to make you think and not tell you how you SHOULD think.

It has been going at it since 1974, way back when the first broadcast occurred in the basement of a South Oakland building. It was started by a group of volunteers, and continues to remain independently operated and a member-supported station. Fast forward to the Community Broadcast Center on the South side, its current location. This radio station cannot be taken for granted when so many other radio stations have come and gone, or find themselves under the clutches of corporate broadcasting. WYEP promotes itself well, and rewards its' members and listeners quite frequently. For instance, as a donor, I have been invited to at least 2 Live and Direct sessions at their studio featuring well-know musicians, attended an outing at Club Café, viewed the recently released Beatles movie at a local theater, and, will be a guest at an upcoming performance at the Pittsburgh Winery. This all occurred within the month of September! I cannot say enough good things about the station, their selection of music, or all of the community programs they promote and sponsor. The Pittsburgh community is well-served with WYEP's presence, and I certainly hope it will be around for many more years to come. I am very proud to be one of it's supporters.

It's a place where you can see the artists close up and you really get a chance to feel like you're one with the show. I know, places like First Niagara Pavilion where you sit hundreds of feet away amongst the throngs of sweaty people and get overcharged for the privilege have their charms. But a concert at a really small venue like this is something every music fan should try. My cousin and I went here to see the Patti Spadaro Band in concert. Spadaro is a rarity--she's one of the few female lead guitarists out there. Whenever people think of a female guitarist, they often think of a folkie with acoustic, a rhythm guitarist, or a bassist. I'm not as familiar with her material as I should be. I've seen her at a few area festivals and only now am I getting into her music. But she plays as she says, "bluesy, jammy rock with wailing female guitar." She played a lot from her newest CD "Bringing Me Back" as well as a little bit of her older material. It was a rollicking good show and now I've got to go out and get her CDs

Subjecting us to Liz.. , Christopher.. whatever "hosts" (with quotes); unnecessary expenses {job/position}, waste of airtime, & loss of listenership. When they dumped Harry Shearer & Le Show as well as Echoes I began to look elsewhere. They dropped Friday's Fresh Air shortly before Roger Ebert died. Therefore Terry Gross's tribute to Roger Ebert didn't air locally, in the Pittsburgh market. I've gotten to the point where I enter WCPN Cleveland on my phone and listen to live broadcasts in that manner. Lastly, today they aired a rebroadcast of Terry Gross's interview with Howard Stern rather than "Most Recent Episodes, March 11, 2020. The Untold Story Of Saudi Crown Prince MBS," presumably for fundraising purposes. (They hire Chris Potter & Bill O'Driscoll to what end, they're talents are wasted at/by WESA). I'd forgotten about their failed noontime show, hosted by Paul.. Audre Previn went off on him Poor Andre he was used sparkling engaging conversation with Tony Mowod.
