The ambiance here is sexy, dirty, and has a great vibe. The service is great. The reality is the patrons don't match the energy. It should be a cruise bar where there is more action than words. Unfortunately it is full of chatty Cathys and uptight guys who think they are too good to be there. I miss when gay bars were only gay men. FINALLY an ACTUAL gay bar. I'm going to preface this review by saying that'd I had just been to several other gay/queer places that night and was disappointed by all of them. So when I stepped into Woof's, I finally felt like this was where I should have been the whole time. What a great "new" discovery! I just happened to be in Madison for their Gay Pride weekend, & happened upon this bar. The staff were quite friendly to tourists & outsiders that aren't "Madison regulars." In other words, they do not discriminate here. Love that! The staff made me feel welcome, & what I really liked about this bar was the location ( on the capital square) very affordable drink prices, and NO cover charge like OTHER gay bars in Madison. I went to their block party that they had for Pride weekend and that was a blast! Great music, plenty of space blocked off, various outdoor drink tents & it didn't rain! I visited Madison, while escaping family for Thanksgiving this year. I happened to stumble upon "Woof's" a small, quaint little bar in the heart of downtown Madison. As someone who was visiting from out of town, the owner was quick to welcome me in and give me a run down about the specials for the day and all that the bar had to offer. Locals started to fill in and were exceptionally kind, social and very friendly. The owner graciously put out an amazing Thanksgiving spread for all guests to enjoy. It was simple, but meant a lot to me and others that he went above and beyond to offer this food. Woof's has a very nice selection of men's apparel in the back and the staff were exceptionally accommodating in helping me find things that I can't find even here in Atlanta. I cannot say enough about this little place. All types of guests were welcomed here - no labels were excluded. Everyone was treated the same. I enjoyed my first visit so much that I went back the next night. Don't think twice about going here - you will enjoy it and be glad you did!!! read more

WOOFS is a bear/leather bar. All the gay bars in Madison have an atmosphere I would describe as "theatrically abrasive," but WOOFS might be the most theatrically abrasive bar of them all. The lights are constantly flashing, the speakers bump dance remixes (exclusively, it would appear), and the walls are plastered with television screens showing slideshows of half naked men. It would be very easy for me to hate WOOFS because of these things, but these are also the very things that make it charming. Nothing is more satisfying as watching a group of naive straight men wander into the bar and quickly realize they're not in Kansas anymore. WOOFS is good time depending on the night. If it's not one of those nights, it's a bar best enjoyed outside at one of their picnic tables (away from the pounding beats). read more

Okay, this review might not be completely fair because I went on the Sunday night. But upon walking in I noticed my friend and I were literally the only two inside the bar....holy crap! We still had a drink and the bartender was a older guy and a sweetheart!! The bar had great interior - a random dildo, ceiling full of undies, Care Bear drawings, caged, and muchhhh more. Oh - a Puerto Rican flag - I felt the love! Also, I got the choose the size of my drink - short or tall and that was a really cool thing to do. Let me choose what I want my budget to be. $$$$$ And lastly, the TV's!!! All those hunks on the TV's - I was entertained with that I completely forgot we were the ONLY TWO PEOPLE. 3/5 only because we were literally the only two people. read more

Back again to Woofs. I was here for the July 4th weekend, and now again for the Thanksgiving weekend. It's still a great bar.

I had a great time here for their 10 year anniversary party. The crowd was a lot more diverse than I'm used to seeing out at the neighborhood gay watering hole. (I'm used to communities being somewhat self-segregating.) As a first-timer, everyone was friendly, and I had a few great chats with folks throughout the bar. There were people presenting all types of gender expression, and it looked like most everyone knew each other and was having a great time. I'll most definitely be back when I'm in town. read more

I'm not the target audience of a gay bar, but I was completely fine with Woof's. I was a little disappointed with the size of this place. It was a club equivalent of a fun sized Snickers. Woof's is a sports bar targeted towards Madison's gays, but it wasn't all that sporty besides for a pool table that had to be covered and darts that I wished people would stop playing. Insane Dancing + Darts being thrown across the dance floor = Asking for trouble. The most annoying thing about Woof's was the air conditioning. It was hot outside earlier so at first it was nice, but the place wasn't that crowded and I was too tired to get my dance on (I had driven up earlier that day from DC) so perhaps it was nice, but for me it was just a little too fake cold. All in all Woof's is a great place to go and dance, but don't go expecting to find too many people. We definitely brought the party. read more

It is what it is: A gay bar with great cheap drinks, approachable bartenders, and a generally small, but friendly crowd. Nothing extravagant or fancy, but that's what makes this place so great. The clientele is largely comprised of middle-aged men grabbing a drink and mingling, which only adds to it's charm. I've always felt welcomed, despite how young and naïve I look. Hell, even my girl friends dig this place. * I must add that if you're put off by the male body you shouldn't come here. I was here for king street concert the other day because it was the only place I had access to from the street. I had been there earlier with my friends and bought several lemon drop shots and drinks. I returned about 20 minutes later to use the bathroom. The owner saw me getting in the line to use the bathroom and blocked the door telling me that the bathroom is for customers only and I need to get a drink first. I told him I was there earlier and will purchase a drink after using the bathroom. He kept yelling at me to buy something first then pushed me towards the bar. Unacceptable. So I called him a name for being violent. He and his staff lost it and told me to get out of the bar. One of the guys serving behind the bar without his shirt came up to me and told me I should consider myself lucky because I am a girl. He said he would have punched me if I was a guy. I thought we were for gender and sexual orientation equality?! Anyway, they ended up calling cops on me. I was removed from the bar. The cops were so understanding and helpful. They actually said I could charge the owner for assault since he put his hands on me. I was already so upset about what happened I decided not to pursue it. I get that businesses are for profit and you gotta watch out for people who are taking advantage of you, but this was completely unnecessary. read more

This bar is AWESOME!! Been coming to Madison for years (about 3 or 4 times a year) and I always make sure to swing by. It's a great atmosphere, excellent bartenders, terrific drinks. If I could give this place a 0 I would. We were In a bachelorette party that literally was in the building for a minute and we were told if we weren't going to order drinks we needed to leave. By a guy that was in too little of shorts and a tank top told the Bachelorette that was not even drunk that she the water she had had to be dumped. I was out for my Bachelorette having a blast! My girls told me to come to Woofs and the last time I was there it was a blast! We got there and went to the bar and we were told 'you should leave you're not getting served'. There was no good reason why we were told that. When we addressed it we were told that there were girls who looked like us in the bar earlier that were too drunk. I felt stereotyped and discriminated against. I will never go back here and I will let everyone I know how rude they were. read more

Woofs is really the only bar I go to anymore. It is a gay men's fetish themed bar. It is small, but it is a neighborhood bar, not a night club. The bartenders usually tend bar shirtless and there is no body shaming. There is a small store area in the back that sells leather, rubber, and fetish releated gear and clothing, lube, and even some NP gear. It is a gay men's bar but women and stright men are welcome as long as they are respectful. The TV screens show some music videos, sometimes a few ball games, and the ones by the bar have slideshows of shirtless sexy, hairy, bearded type men. It is not really a super busy place unless there is a special theme party. Its a great place to stop after work or on a weekend afternoon for a few drinks. The music is low enough you can have a conversation unless it is one of theme nights with a DJ. They have an awesome bloody mary bar on Sundays at noon leading to a beer bash Sunday evening. Its not really a pic up bar, just a hangout. Its not uncommon for a dog or two to be seen on the premises. BTW, they only take cash, they always have. But there is low fee ATM in the bar. I read a couple comments with low ratings from ladies who went there with bachelorette parties and didnt feel welcome and I have to say its because you really arent. I understand that these women think the gay bar will be a "safe place" for them where they dont have to deal with skeevey dudes. But do you really think a group of gay men want to deal with a bunch of half drunk bridezilla's who think its some kind of cool thing to be in a gay bar for their party night? Think about it, gay men have only been able to marry each other since 2015, so it has always been kind of a slap in the face when bridal parties insisted on coming into one our few "safe places". read more

Madison's stab at a leather/bear/jeans bar. Could it be better? Yep, but they are doing the best they can with the space they have. The staff is always friendly and Jimmy the bartender is AWESOME! Woof's hosted a very nice block party over Pride and it was the first time in my few years living in Madison that I had attended the event. I was impressed. The event was well attended, the music was good, the crowd was handled nicely and the staff maintained their professionalism. I moved here from Denver and even I was impressed. I hope that in the future Woof's is able to catch on with more people. On a completely unrelated note, stay away from Plan B. You will want to carry Mace with you, have a police escort or just avoid it all together. It is a boring, heteronormative nightclub under the guise of a gay friendly club with a sketchy clientele and lots of yappy straight chicks who like to imagine they have gay, male friends. Tried to go to this place about 3 months ago with 4 girlfriends. We were just walking around and saw Woof's and decided to stop in for a shot. We walk up and a man sitting outside walks up to us and tells us it is a $15 cover. We ask him if there is a band or something and he says no. We say we just wanted to do a quick shot and he says no. So we walk away. Something just doesn't feel right to me, and luckily I have my smart phone on me. Go to the Woof's website and what does it say front page, loud and clear? NO COVER EVER! So that's interesting. My friend decides to call the number on the website and a man answers. She asks, is there a cover tonight and is told, "No, there is never a cover at Woofs!" So we go back, because now we're upset. The same man comes up to us again. We ask him why he said there was a cover and we're told he is the owner and we are not his clientele. He has the right to refuse service to anyone. This was absolutely humiliaIiating as it happened in front of a large crowd sitting outside. I was floored and could not believe this place would net let us in. We were not causing any problems, we were dressed up, we were polite. But no, through no uncertain terms, we were not allowed in. As I said, this was 3 months ago and it still bothers me greatly. My friends and I have always been and will always be, proud supporters of the gay community. It was devastating that this place would discriminate against us for not being gay (and who is to say that one of us wasn't?). We felt betrayed, demeaned, and beyond confused. Luckily we went to Plan B, where we were welcomed in with a smiling face, no mention of a cover, and danced our hearts out. read more
