No apology from the desk clerk, just a response of "there's nothing I can do about it". This is a pure example of bait and switch. The outside of this place looks like a poorly maintained motor inn from the 70s. The room had no wash cloths or hand towels, and no towel hooks or bars except one over the toilet. We asked for the missing towels and the receptionist said, I'll have to call housekeeping". Again, no apology. An hour later we are still waiting for our towels. Choice Hotels calls the part of their "Ascend Collection". It will have to "ascend" a long way to make it even halfway decent. This is a place to avoid.

First off, I had no idea there were 2 hotels at Viejas and honestly love the Willows Hotel & Spa, plus it's a 21+. When you walk in, it feels like a mini Vegas hotel. But it's really when you get up to the room that is impressive; probably one of the nicer rooms that I've stayed in which a nice open area with a mini bar, desk and living room. The bedroom is in a separate room and much to my surprise, there was a special birthday setup on the bed for me (loved it!). And can't forget the extra large shower with rainfall faucet and all the amenities you would need. On to the spa. Amazing. While it's on the smaller side I had a great experience, from the attentive staff that made me feel welcomed to the massage and near-private hot tub/sauna/steam room and lovely pool area. It's adjacent to the regular hotel pool that you also have access to as well. If you get a service you can use the amenities all day with in and out privileges, such a nice relaxing day if you ask me. So while I'm limiting my review to the hotel and spa, the Viejas property has so much to do. The casino is a short walk from the hotel along with a variety of restaurants. The outlet mall is literally across the street and has a bingo hall and bowling and also had a seasonal skating rink. The golf course is also a drive down the road. Food is expensive in Julian. A similar breakfast at a local restaurant would be $20. The staff are great. I met several day managers and the night security guy. They are all terrific people. It is really like staying in someone's home rather than a hotel. These is no TV. I think that belongs with the pros. The location is great. Right in the middle of town. Cons: Our room was tiny. Really tiny. Use the drawers and closets for your stuff so you don't trip over it. A side effect of the smallness of the room is that the heater/ac struggles to control the temperature . The design of any heater/ac unit presumes a room volume. The room is so tiny, the heater's built in control parameters are way off. Parking, parking is "street parking" and on a weekend, it's every man for himself. You may have to drag your bags a block or two. ---------------------- So would we stay there again? Absolutely. I would probably spend a bit more and get one of the small number of larger rooms, if available. If you want to relax and read, I cannot think of a better place. One thing I should mention, if you attempt to make reservations on line, there are half a dozen fake web sites imitating the hotel. They are put up by a dodgy travel company. They are really good imitations. I even an experienced computer user could be fooled. It is best just to call them.
