First, all the staff were wearing excellent Christmas jumpers. (points!) Second, the interior is lovely with artistic lighted decor and wood tables and floors. Third, the drinks that got us started were delicious and well made. Then there's the food. Nom!! Okay, admittedly I'm a cheapskate and would probably never treat myself to a place with a price tag like this one. But if you're looking for a nice meal in a lovely environment, this place is worth scoping out. I had three courses, and each one was delicious. As a veggie, I didn't have much options, but I was delighted of the quality of the things I did order: some kind of pumpkin(?) soup, risotto, and cheesecake. I mean, seriously... Usually risotto us boring at best, but this was cheesy deliciousness. A lovely meal! And bravo to the servers who kept pace with a large group.

The food is a bit pricey, but I loved the charcuterie platter that came with multiple dipping oils. The vegetarian platter was also really nice (I would've liked to combine the two!) and the full Scottish breakfast was tasty and very filling! The pancakes, though, were lackluster (but this is coming from an American point of view), not very fluffy or well browned but they did give a heaping amount of bacon. I'd recommend it for a solid, picturesque spot if you're in the area but not necessarily somewhere to go out of your way for.

It was so flavorful and delicious! But I'm also bias towards goat cheese. It also came with a very refreshing side salad. This place has vegetarian and gluten free options. My soup was excellent. I had haggis balls and they were pretty good. I mean it was my first time so none of my judgement is on that Caesar salad salad was way overdressed. So you got a couple things that are good and a lot of things that are OK and the Caesar salad salad was swimming I could say one thing to the restaurant you've got the stuff to make the place pop just touch up the menu a bit. You cannot serve sliced bread with oil dip. That absolutely has to be an artisan bread like it was on your bruschetta.

I started with still water and a lager and the fried haggis bonbons which were fabulous. I'm not sure why haggis isn't liked by so many. I had a burger and fries too. Compass Bar is a well sited bar and restaurant, occupying the corner of Constitution and Queen…read moreCharlotte streets in Leith. When I first arrived in Edinburgh on holiday, it was highly recommended by locals. Honestly at night it looks a bit of a dive bar from the outside, so Brittany A. and I weren't sure what to expect going in for dinner our second night in town. Compass is physically divided into a bar at the entrance that can seat about 30 people, and a traditional looking restaurant located half a story up in the building that is good for groups. Both the bar and restaurant sections are served by staff, so you won't have to worry about ordering at a till. The interior looks like it was recently renovated. Original plaster details on the bar ceiling accent the warm wood and rock walls. A large hearth offers a visually intriguing focal point. The restaurant is decorated with large French posters and features a wood plank ceiling. A clear line of sight into the kitchen lets you watch your order creation. Our first visit was for dinner around 9PM in the restaurant section. Food is served for twelve hours, 10AM - 10PM daily. Compass has a good number of vegetarian options on the menu. I opted for their vegetarian club, a giant sandwich stuffed to the gills with hummus and halloumi, served with a side of chips. It's an incredible entree that requires a big appetite. I tried one of the Innis & Gunn beers on tap in addition to their complementary tap water infused with cucumber and mint. The dinner service was prompt and professional, and our entrees were out in a jiffy. We enjoyed the food so much we came back on our final day in Edinburgh for an 11AM brunch. We tend to take our dog with us on our travels, and Compass allows pooches in the bar area. The bar is very relaxed with some comfortable window booth seating and free WIFI. This is the kind of place you can get some real work done. I tried their small vegetarian breakfast, a full plate with vegetarian haggis, sausage, hash brown, beans, mushrooms, toast and more. For a small portion I once again was left completely full. It was honestly one of the best veggie breakfasts I've tried in the UK. We stayed for a bit, enjoying the music and several excellent espresso drinks. Overall Compass Bar is a great neighbourhood institution offering top notch service, great prices, and delicious food all day long.

I really wanted to like The Refinery, and in many ways I do after visiting yesterday, however what…read morehas driven me to give such a low score is the level of ambient noise. It's unbelievably loud!! Or at least it was on 2 August. The food was lovely, the staff were attentive, the facilities and decor were clean, modern and fitting. However when I can barely hear what my date is saying, or what the waiting staff are saying, then something is wrong ... and it's not my hearing! Looking around the tables I guess others had the same problem, because it was a sea of people sitting staring at phone screens rather than chatting. Turn the music down a little, and add some sound deadening so that the noise of food preparation and serving doesn't reverberate and echo around every fixture and fitting, then this place could become a 3.5.

I said for the size of our group can we get the other tables towards the back. There were other tables available and all right behind us. The hostess said no absolutely not guests were to be assigned to their tables. There were people behind us but they were after us; plus they were of smaller size than ours, clearly our skin color is the main issue. They sat us down, and quite a few minutes pass, others trickle in and promptly everyone bumps into me. At which point I told the hostess this is not acceptable. They sat 2 people at a table for 4, in the back while this table of 4 is really too small for 4 people. One thing stood out to me, we were the only non whites. When the last group again bumped into me, I asked to be moved; she then said due to short of staff they cannot change the seating but seeing seriously everyone is bumping into me, she begrudgingly moved us to a corner table with no lights - and not surprisingly no service. I understand the importance of trying to make the white people feel comfortable about not being seen with non whites - the best way is tuck the non whites away - but this is 2022. I am from California and no, this is absolutely unacceptable. Like MLK junior or Rosa Parks, we protected, first by requesting to be moved away from the hallway, then by my two teens and I walking out of the restaurant and finding more tolerant non racist restaurant to eat, and we spent a lot of money on the other restaurant. You too can make a decision to either eat or not eat at this place. The choice is entirely up to you. And this will define who you are.
